Fort Belvoir Golf Club - Gunston Course

Could use more mowing of long rough. Liked the terrain changes.

I like this course. However; it was difficult getting to the course as it’s on an army base. If it were not I’d definitely look to go back but I’m going to pass for just that reason. Nice layout well kept but the base thing Os a deal breaker for me.

Course was good for Winter conditions. Good value.

Good course, but the steep hills and long distances between green and tee makes it a strenuous walking course.

Temporary tee boxes were okay.

Staff is always rude and the course is over priced. Prices were really good about 2 years ago, but as the conditions of the course went south, somehow the prices were raising. I like playing the course but it's just not worth the price anymore.

The course is getting much needed work on bunkers and tee boxes. The greens are still in good shape despite being late October.

Booked reservation through pro shop for a next day tee time. I was never told that at least six to seven tee boxes were under construction. Upon arriving at the course, I was given no warning as to the tee box situation. At least 6-7 tee boxes on the front 9 at Woodlawn were being re-constructed. All tee markers (white, yellow, and blue) were placed at the womens' tees. Sure, had less yardage to drive from women's tees, but still had to pay top dollar for my round of golf ($52.00). Also, sand traps had not been raked in a long time......if you can play Woodlawn at a very reduced price or the Gunston course it might be worth the effort but not as this price.

Played it today and the course was in very good shape, for a military golf course. Folks are saying the greens were aerated recently. Yes, but I thought they were fine today. I've played Woodlawn course at Belvoir and I much more prefer Gunston. Last time I played Woodlawn (spring 2017) it was in real bad shape. Today, the fairways and the greens were in good shape. One negative was the hard-as-a-rock tee boxes. Not all, but several were so compact it was hard to push a tee into the ground. When you come here, give yourself extra time to get through security if you don't have a DOD ID. This course welcomes the non-military public and it's a very good price even as a visitor. Being a local, I appreciate the base commander welcoming the local golfers.

Good course, tough layout because of the hilly terrain. Would play here again if the greens were in a little better shape. One looked like it had just been through an earthquake. All in all, great for the price but won't blow you away.

Course was interesting. Some tee boxes were decimated. Greens were aerated sometime in the past so were extremely bumpy, so putting was crazy. Pace play of play is only dictated on this course by speed of players in front. There is no course management. There were three players in front in carts who were agonizingly slow. Marshall said he talked to them several times but really couldn't do anything about it. He said he was going to quit next year because he couldn't stand it anymore. What can I say... you either have speed of play rules or you don't.. This course does not.

Great course for the price. Some fun holes with steep hills. Wide fairways on several, though we found many places to lose our balls. :) The staff was friendly, course had great views and the price was awesome. The greens were being aerated, so I rated the conditions lower, but I appreciate they keep up with maintenance.

Course was redesigned to accommodate land taken away to build an Army Museum. Resulted in shorter holes overall with a few more par three holes thrown in. Otherwise a nice course as military courses go. Tee boxes were mostly crabgrass and the fairways have some rough spots as well. Very hilly with a lot of trees, so is challenging in many ways.

Gunston Course has been redone since I first reviewed it. It went from a difficult outstanding course (par 72) to a short, not too difficult course (Par 70). The fairways are not in good shape. The greens are very slow. Hopefully, it will be in better shape next season.

Good value if Hot Deal...bunkers and greens in rough shape. Staff friendly, good pace of play for weekend.
