Pohick Bay Golf Course
About
Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course in Lorton has been one of the area's most popular public courses since it opened in the early 1980s. Playing at Pohick Bay is like playing two golf courses in one, with a front nine that has long, tree-lined fairways and a hillier back nine that features a variety of doglegs and water holes. It is a definitely a shot-maker's course so be prepared to use some creativity and some thoughtful strategizing doesn’t hurt either. The constant up and down of the golf course provides uneven lies and a number of blind shots. The dramatic terrain also makes it a tough course to walk. Trees frame most of the holes, demanding accuracy but also providing a peaceful and secluded feel. Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course is popular amongst locals for being one of the most challenging and yet also one of the most affordable courses in the area.

Looks good
The course was in very good condition and will only get better year round. Highly recommended.
Handicap: 2 - Pohick is better than advertised
Greens were in great shape...fast and true. Teeboxes, fairways and rough were lush. This course is challenging your first time as nearly every hole is a dogleg w/ elevation changes and sloping greens (pays to be on the low side of the hole). Beautiful piece of land - heavily wooded with a few water features. Not a single house on the course. Play didnt slow down till the 14th hole.
Overall, I was very impressed with this golf course and will be back.
Nice course w/ minimal drawbacks!
My only complaint about this course is they adhere to a very strict timeline. I was rushed from the driving range to the 1st tee, ten minutes prior to my scheduled tee time, because they were ahead of schedule. Other than that, the course was great and well kept. I would gladly play here again in the future.
Great course
great course. Well maintained. Fast pace of play. greens in good shape. Sand traps are best I have seen around this area. Fun course to play.
Great Shape for Mid-April
The staff was friendly - the course fair but tough - pace of play outstanding for a weekend - far and away the most picturesque of the NVPRA courses!
the course has great green
the course is change a lot since I play now is very good go play
First time playing
Hard to give a solid review w/ course being recently punched. Putting on the greens was almost like hitting from sand trap. HIlly course, lots of blind shots. Would like to go back later to see what course when its in better conditions.
This course was terribly sandy on greens. Worst I've seen.
I was very displeased once i saw the course because no one informed me off the aeration of greens. Although, I know it's that time of year but the sand on the green. I wanted to ask for a refund because i couldn't tell if I was on green or in the sand trap.
This is the best value of any course in the area. Period.
This is by far my favorite course in the area, if you don't want to pay the $50+ to play Laurel Hills. It is challenging but fair. The fairways are open, but the rough can be long, so don't go there. Even in January the course was in good shape. If you typically play Greendale or Ospreys, I don't know why.
Excellent value for the Golfnow booking price.
All of the greens were in great shape.
You could not tell that it is the winter season.
good public course
Overall, this course is well maintained public course. Not too easy and not too hard.
Very difficult Course
You need to play layup shots on several holes and the greens can be difficult to judge.
Great Bang for the Buck!
The greens make you think its early summer! Course is in great shape and for the $19 I paid on Golfnow you would be a fool to not play!
Good for an outing with friends. Not very challenging.
This course is a great value if you can find it as a hot deal. At full price I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to others as the course is not very challenging. It plays average, can be slow if there are a lot of foursomes out that day as there are a lot of older golfers who frequent the course.
Greens are fairly well maintained. Some of the shorter holes have a lot of marks that people neglect to repair but are definitely playable. All in all, it always ends up being my last minute go to because of location, available tee times, and it being a generally well maintained golf course.
This course is well-maintained and has very friendly staff.
They always try very hard to accommodate walk-ons. The thing which contributed to the extra long pace of play when I was there last was the fact that they were trying to accommodate a high school golf team practice.
Harder than Moderate, Good Value
Pohick Bay is owned and maintained by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. It is not a beginner's course and some of the holes are challenging (it's a bit more difficult than moderate). It is hilly, full of trees, with only one or two holes where water is in play. It favors accuracy over length, but due to its elevation changes proper club selection is very important since the golfer is always trading accuracy, length, and next shot visibility. Local knowledge is more useful here than on other public courses in the area. Leaf fall, hills, and sun angles in the autumn sometimes makes finding the ball difficult, even on the fairways. But it is in good condition for a public course and drainage is better than expected given the hills and trees. Greens are a little better than standard for a public course. A good value for local golfers.
Great shape
Friendly for the average golfer, the course was in the best shape of any I have played in Virginia. Kudos to the groundskeepers! Very well run course all around.
