Pohick Bay Golf Course
About
Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course in Lorton has been one of the area's most popular public courses since it opened in the early 1980s. Playing at Pohick Bay is like playing two golf courses in one, with a front nine that has long, tree-lined fairways and a hillier back nine that features a variety of doglegs and water holes. It is a definitely a shot-maker's course so be prepared to use some creativity and some thoughtful strategizing doesn’t hurt either. The constant up and down of the golf course provides uneven lies and a number of blind shots. The dramatic terrain also makes it a tough course to walk. Trees frame most of the holes, demanding accuracy but also providing a peaceful and secluded feel. Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course is popular amongst locals for being one of the most challenging and yet also one of the most affordable courses in the area.

Not bad but there are better.
We decided to play this course to try something different. The staff was polite and we were able to tee off 15 minutes early. The guys we were teamed up with were very nice and pretty funny so we had an enjoyable day. As for the course, all tee boxes were in good condition. A lot of the fairways were in pretty rough shape and a few were more difficult to hit off than the rough, which was actually manicured pretty well. Some fairways do slope into the trees but the foliage was not too dense to prevent an easy punch out. The greens were a bit slow but maintained well with the exception of unrepaired divots. As for the layout, most holes where straight or slight dog legs with generous fairways. There were a few blind shots into danger and there is a string of holes on the back nine that were challenging and well thought out. A second outing here would certainly lend to shaving some strokes off. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves but the condition did not warrant the price when Forest Greens is around the corner for only a few more dollars.
Nice course with wide fairways
I really ejoyed playing this course. It was a weekday so it wasnt overly crowded. The course was in good condition.
Great Corse.
This is the only course in NVA that we play from the white tees as it is more than enough for us.
Doglegs, elevation changes and tight fairways make for a rewarding experience.
Don't let the yardage fool you, this course is fun!
Greens, tee boxes excellent shape, fairways good. Rough High and tough.
Due to previous storms, was cart path only which contributed to the slower pace of play. There are number of blind shots, with many of the "safe" areas to hit towards, away from the path. The rough may have been longer than normal due to the previous week's rain, but it was very challenging to hit from and the higher handicappers in our group had difficulty. Overall, the GolfNow rate was a very good bargain for 18 holes.
Decent course
Greens keeper needs a new job. A few holes the pin was less than a couple feet from the fringe. Except for this the play was decent.
A great course right outside of the Beltway.
Living in Alexandria, I've been looking for a new "home course" for a while. I think I've found it with Pohick Bay. The layout is challenging and fun. There's a good mix of length and shot-making required. A couple of the holes are definitely easier to play once you've played there once or twice. There are a couple of sharp doglegs that don't reveal themselves fully until the second shot. But I like the feeling of the place on the whole.
If I had one quibble, it would be that some folks in the clubhouse can be a bit brusque. Otherwise, the place is great.
Solid course
Overall I thought Pohick was a good course. Thr layout is a bit quirky with several blind shots. Greens were undulated and of average pace.
I'm a 16 handicapper and played from the back tees which are only 6,375. In hindsight, due to the lush and challenging rough and narrow fairways I wish I had played the white tees. I'd definitely call this a "play it forward" type of course.
great course
the course is a good shape and the people were nice..
Pohick Bay June 30, 2013
Course was in superb condition, all but one or two fairways in perfect shape (couple were a bit gushy but course had inches of rain the last two days but drainage overall excellent.
Greens were pro tournament, country club quality and this is a municiple course!!
Pace of play was excellent and there was rangers circling frequently (scattered T-storms had a few group cancellations). Got off on time, finished 4 hours and staff was just friendly and fantastic for tips on some of the holes. Best course I've played this year and I've played in No. VA, Fla and Richmond.
Great course, pace of play always a problem.
Marshaling needs improvement, pace of play is terrible. Course conditions were great but players spend too much time looking for wayward tee shots
Greens in great shape; GPS yardage differs from tee box yardage by +40?
I enjoyed this course; the rough is thick but the fairways are great; bring insect repellent biting flies will get you!!
I enjoy the challenges of this course.
Whether you play from the Whites or the Blues, the twists and turns of this course are a challenge to the average golfer.
This course is hilly
I don't know why people walk this course? If you realy want to enjoy this course, then you should ride! It is just too hilly for walking, you will end up with a feeling of being hurried, because of the back up, it can get crowded!
Well maintained, many blind shots and elevation changes, difficult if you haven't played.
This course is in excellent shape, greens very good. Many interesting holes, but also many blind shots and frequent severe elevation changes. Fairways are very narrow and difficult to find if you are not familiar with the course. Rough is deep enough off the fairways that finding your ball takes time. No tee boxes between 5,000 and 6,000 yards. Not friendly for senior players.
Thecourse was in good shape and I would play it again.
The course was good to play. There was a back-up because they ran out of golf cars and they had to wait until the golfers came off the 18th hole. The back-up was approximately 25 minutes. The course was in good shape. I would play it again.
Blind tee shots were fun
difficult course, but almost everyone would shoot lower the second time around
Great Challenge
Great course greens were all the same pace with hard to read breaks. You have to be careful of where the ball is placed on the green. The fairways wet but in good shape.
Beautiful short course, but not for the weekend duffer
At 6,400 yards from the tips, this course is not very long. However, tree lined fairways; sloping fairways doglegs; and fast & undulating greens make this a terrific little course where accuracy matters. The greens are massive and just getting on the green does not guarantee a two or even three putt. All in all, it was a very enjoyable course and I look forward to coming back.
Good, but a bit gimmicky
First time playing Pohick, and I was really impressed by the condition that the course was in. Bonus points for the fact that they even had a couple of guys working on the course in the afternoon, on Sunday (while not impeding the pace of play).
Now, the layout here is pretty interesting. There is a lot elevation change, and it's pretty drastic. And nearly half of the holes have pretty significant doglegs, too. This combination made for a few holes that just seemed gimmicky. Having a blind tee shot, into a dogleg, that leads to a hazard, is a bit much in my opinion. I'm all for challenging holes, but circus putt-putt layouts kind of exceed that. After a few rounds here, though, I guess I could get used to it.
The fairways were good, and the greens were even better. No sign of aerification, and they were rolling fast and true. Traps were in really good shape, too (although a couple really stood out for looking/playing as if they'd been neglected, but the rest really were great).
Pace of play was not great. With at least a hole or two open behind us, I'm pretty sure our threesome could've been moved up at some point. But, the none of the marshals seemed too terribly concerned with the pace. Oh well.
Overall, this a very well maintained course, with a somewhat gimmicky layout that will definitely hold your attention. And pace of play could definitely be worse, for a muni on the weekend. Mostly worth your dollars.
