Great course for all ages Photo submitted by u000007489204 on 08/26/2013
Great day of golf.
Maybe my best golf now experience to date. All of the staff were friendly and professional but I must single out the nice lady behind the snack counter for providing warm friendly service at the turn. I was teamed with a golf now threesome and we started right on time. Dave , Nick and John were great guys and I really enjoyed the round with them. It's a fun layout with a mix of doglegs to the left and right, some fun par threes and most of the par fives where reachable birdie holes. There hasn't been much rain around here lately so the course was a little dry and the greens were firm, but it was still very playable and that added to the challenge a little. You will like this course and enjoy a lake view on a couple holes.
Course is in great shape
Our group hadn't played at Suffolk in about a month and we thought it was really nice the last time but the course is in such good shape you can play the ball down in the fairways,John the pro told us they have been fertilizing them every month and we must say they are nice, the greens were smooth and fast and the new cart paths make it really nice,Hats off to the maintenance crew and thanks John for making our round enjoyable as always
This course and staff makes you feel at home.
Friendly staff and good course conditions. It has been a year since I played this course and plan on returning very soon.
Nice for the price
The greens were still full of sand from maintenance...wasn't published prior to starting the round. The distances are very poorly marked. A rangefinder is highly recommended.
Playing better than any course in Tidewater.
Nothing but great things to say about all aspects of this course, staff and facilities. Playing better than all the other courses I have been playing in the area.....and I have played them all; municipal and private. Tee boxes, greens and fairways in spectacular shape. Pro shop and snack bar staff very friendly and practice facilities are adequate. Price to play 18 with cart more than reasonable. Challenging design that makes you think! Play this course now!!!?
Course is really nice right now
Our group plays st Suffolk at least once a month and it's in the best shape we have ever seen it,thanks John for always being so courteous and helpful and we will be back soo.P.S the new cart pats are really nice to ride on
Could be nice
This could be a wonderful course. I have played it maybe 10 times over the years. Its open well designed to work on shot strategy. The course is mostly in good shape for the summer. Its also cheap 23 to ride after 2pm during the week. Now the cons... 1 Not enough water. Only 1 water cooler per nine holes (and that was empty when i got to it) This was with a heat index >100. I had water bit not near enough
This wouldnt have bothered me if the proshop didnt argue that the coolers were not empty (now).. that soesnt help me when There is no drink cart (when i was playing) and I had a dehydration headach before I finished the front 9. Filled my water and purchased a drink, but golf is not as much fun with a headache.. so BRING YOUR OWN WATER BECAUSE YOU CANT DEPEND ON GETTING ANY ON COURSE. Also, the cart paths were really torn up. I mean sections missing and lots of rough patches.. the looked like they had been there for at least a week. Hopefully they will repair these because the current condition made it harder to find the yardage markers. Again i like the couese, it just needs some diligent maintenance. Play this in spring or early fall for the best experience.
Suffolk Golf Course
Fairways were in good condition without any bare spots. Greens looked in rough condition, but were smooth and fast for this area. Tee boxes need some maintenance, pretty chewed up and rarely found a flat spot on them. Pace of play was 4 hours, could have been faster, but the group ahead of us was slow and wouldn't let us play thru.
Course in great shape
We played a tournament there today and found the course to be in great shape and the rate is only 33 dollars and the pro told us number 6 green did have some Winterkill from the harsh winter but the sod they put down should be great by the end of the month. The other 17 greens were good and the course very well groomed for our event and the price is about 20 dollars less than any other course in the Suffolk area which is great value so I think the previous review has Champagne taste on a beer budget because they got the hot deal( wants to be a country club member but can't afford it) .Thanks John( pro shop manager) for accommodating our military group today and I will be back with the regular Foursome to your course very soon.
Nice course if the price is right
Lots of trees along the rough, but several holes are good driving holes if you like to rip it.
Normally priced as if this were a top course in the area, which it is not, we got a good value because of a GolfNow hot deal. They replaced the greens a year or so ago, which were much improved at that time, but sadly they are not as good this year, and one of them (hole 6) is in bad shape (but is being re-sodded). Most sand traps continue to have only a thin layer of sand over hard-packed, clay-like dirt. Attempting a proper sand shot in most traps (there are a few exceptions) will result in the club bouncing into the ball and knocking it well over the green.
Would I recommend it to a friend? That may depend on the friend! The course is a nice layout, and would be worth the money if the condition (top priority: traps; next: greens) were a bit better. At the right price it is a nice track.
Previous review
Not sure why it posted would not recommend to a friend because I definitely would and we already booked our tee time for this coming weekend,
Course is in great shape
Our group played on Sunday morning and we drove over from Virginia Beach and found the cord to be in wonderful shape( so not sure what they other guy is talking about with bad greens The pro told us number six hasn't come out of dormancy yet because of the shade)but the other 17 or in wonderful shape and anyone that plays a lot of golf and plays on Bermuda greens knows they're normally pretty firm. We played in just under four hours and you can't beat the price for weekend golf,Thanks for a great time and we hope the weather is as good the next time we go back in a couple weeks.P.S bunkers are hazards there not suppose to be nice and when I was fortunate enough to play Pine Valley they were hard as bricks and don't even have rakes and I think pine valley is ranked number one in the world
I was excited to play the Champion Greens
Until I got to the first green. They did not hold and they were very very dry. The green on #6 was completely covered with sand. Also, there is no sand in the traps, I guess it's all on the 6th green. I was very disappointed. I have been playing this course over 20 years. Their #1 job is growing grass and that's not happening. Sad. I hope it gets better or I will not make the 25 mile trek to play it.
Great day out on the course
"A bad day of golf is better than a good day at work."
Scenery was nice, especially around the lakes/ponds.
Lots of walkable area in the trees, in case that's where your ball lands.
Pro shop was like a lot of courses. Snack bar that doesn't take plastic, and I'm not complaining. It's like stepping back into the 80's Just a funny observance.
$35 w/cart on a weekend isn't a bad deal, in my opinion.
A lot of dead/dying grass. Could be due to lack of rain in the spring. I don't think I've met a course I didn't like in some way, and this is no different. Will play again next trip to Suffolk,
wrong course locked in when purchasing. thank god I was only charged the tax. I hope!
Slected Stumpy lake and got sent to Suffolk golf course and got charged. No way to contact anyone with problem. Did the whole thing online with pro desk at course. Ended up paying more. I never did get a solution . Giving suffolk a great rating and never played there, but got charged to play.
Great Staff
Staff were great and extremely friendly. Greens were brown but rolled true and were fast. Fairways are just starting to come in.
Suffolk's Gem
Great day for golf. Course was in very good condition.
Fun Times
Enjoyed playing this course. Wild variety of holes some very scenic ,some challenging and a lot had crowned greens so may need a little more club to get home. Greens were brown but rolled true and were fast also were tricky due to the mounds. The last four holes are challenging and I found myself looking forward to playing them. Good place to get a fun round in at a very good price!!
Very Nice local course
One of our favorites,. A number of real challenging holes for us average players
