Golfer Reviews
Fun, Challenging, Great Value!
My colleagues and I have played several courses in Suffolk recently. Someone suggested we try this course, and I am so glad they did. The course was in amazing shape (see attached pic). Tough but fair. Greens were perfect, fairways striped, scenery galore (even spotted a bald eagle on hole 12). Staff was friendly, pace of play was perfect. We will definitely return. The $28 was well worth it! Thank you for a great experience.
Suffolk city course
The greens were really fast, the fairway was in decent shape. The killer was the bunkers, the sand was hard as concrete. But for the price that day I could not complain too much, which is what I'm doing. I would play that course again for that price.
Suffolk GC 07/17/2014
The course overall was in fair to good shape. The greens were fast so took a little time to get used to. Fairways were fair with some crabgrass in them.
Practice facility was poor with lots of crabgrass and hard pack dirt.
An excellent course for the prace
Greens and fairways were in great shape. No crowding. A fun morning together with friends and family.
Fun Round But Course Has Room For Improvment
New greens are hard, bumpy and inconsistent. Fairways are ok. Tee boxes are full of crab grass. Challenging course and fun to play minus the above shortcomings.
No frills
This is one of if not the oldest public course in Suffolk. Traditional tree lined. Slightly narrow fairways, plenty of elevated greens. Penalty for not keeping in fairway. Average but recommended for any beginner. Despite having new greens last year, they are stubby now. Unable to get a pure roll. If looking for bang for the buck this is the course.
Good Shape after all the rain
We had a group drive over from Va Beach to play because it was raining at the beach and found the course pretty dry[it wasn't cart path only]From the last couple of reviews we weren't sure what to expect but after going there and playing i'm not sure what those people were talking about because the course was in good shape[wet in spots but to be expected with all the rain]and the greens were in great shape. It was the first time we played there since the new greens were done last year and they putted great and the course looked good the way the stripes were mowed into the fairways,We will be back again soon because it doesn't cost an arm and leg like most courses on the weekend,Nice staff and food was good.
Good Bang for the Buck!!!
I love this course, great value for the $$ compared to the other courses around town. Greens are in great shape, not sure where the last review said they were burnt out maybe we played two different courses...
Burnt Greens
The course is a fun track to play with some really tough holes.
With that said i know they replaced the greens last year and have seem to let them go to waste, greens were bumpy and burnt up making putting quite the task, the tee boxes are short rough and fairways seem to be a little long. there are a lot nice courses for the same or less money
Not for the price
For the price much rather play Sleepy Hole. Greens didn't roll smooth. Needs to a good weed eater! Tee boxes shaggy.
Sleepy hole the last time we went there the pro shoved 3 groups off in front of us as we made the turn[it took 3 hours to play the back] and the place was so wet balls plugged in the fairways and you couldn't them,we played Suffolk this weekend and it was in great shape and the price was better then most area courses
Disappointing
After reading the reviews for this course I had relatively high hopes for this facility. It was a let down to say the least.
The layout was interesting and the holes were laid out well but the conditions of the greens and fairways were very poor. Apparently they are doing new Bermuda on the greens which requires frequent aeration but these greens were full of weeds and crab grass as well as being stripped and scorched in many places. On of the greens on a par three was probably 70% sand. Made putting a nightmare.
The fairways were almost anything but fair. Not only were they poorly mowed (very high) but their were a half a dozen different kinds of grass and weeds in any square yard. The tee boxes were equally inconsistent.
We had a golf now deal for $30 each which still seems about $10 high for the condition of the course. I don't plan on coming back.
nice track/great value
Play this course several times each year. This time, played on a Friday morning. As usual, staff helpful & friendly. Overall, course in pretty good shape: fairways a bit dry but good grass and well-defined. Most of the traps we 'visited' well-maintained (a few need a bit more sand). Only mild disappointment was condition of the greens. Recently aerated and healing slowly. Most greens were very bumpy and therefore putting was difficult. Greens were redone last fall and have been among best in area until recently. Am hopeful time and more consistent, green-friendly weather help greens return to excellent level. Still, a well laid out track that features lots of natural beauty, some holes that are quite challenging and some that are straight forward.... a course where you'll have a chance to use virtually every club in your bag. Will definitely return
Like the Layout - Manage Your Shots
I like playing the Old Suffolk course. Maybe because of the recent rains the fairways were high and greens had small uneven points. But was still fun to be out in the country hitting the ball...wasn't golfing too good that day!
Nice Course
Course is in pretty good shape considering the storms we had 3 days earlier. A little too wet to mow so fairways and greens were kind of long. Had an enjoyable round. Thank you.
Suffolk on Saturday
An interesting course that is not too difficult for the average golfer.Friendly staff and good facilities
Good course for money
Course was in decent shape, fairway was nicely manicured, bunkers were average, tee boxes were average, greens were vere hard and balls did not check, attacking the green with anything above a 7 iron resulted in the ball releasing to the back of the green or rolling off green, the green speed was consistent, fast, and true. I would rate the greens on par with a better course if you could check balls on the green, bump and run players will enjoy this course.
The course has potential but the greens are misleading.
Me and my son played from the whites tees pace was slow but finished in less than 5 hours. The greens were 3 putt status. Bumps, sparkle items all over greens. Staff was great and the starter was great also.
Pretty Good
The course itself was pretty nice, the green's were fair and a little rough in spots. Was a little bit of a nuisance that they were not able to take cards at the time. Overall it was a good course and would definitly advise people to give them a shot.
The worst greens
They have new Bermuda greens that are around year and half old and they have lost them. They have tried to aerate and sand in hopes of bringing them back but I don't see it happening. The greens were the worst I have ever played on. I will not waste my money to play here again. I suggest you don't either.
Great peaceful course
Awesome staff. The starter is very nice and informative. Good course conditions. Some rough patches. Greens are super fast!!! Be careful.
I'm not real sure what course the guy HOWERTON13 played because we played there today[Saturday August 16th] and the course was in great shape and the greens were fast and smooth,He should go back and see for himself and we played in less than four hours so that's always nice for a weekend round. Thanks for a enjoyable day and the weather was perfect.
