Stumpy Lake Golf Course
About
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones design that provides a unique golfing experience. This scenic layout is routed across a 1,400-acre nature preserve that is absent of any commercial or residential development for miles. The golf course wraps around its namesake lake, which has a canoe and kayak launch as well as a fishing pier. Deer, fox, and eagles are frequently seen on the course and there has even been the occasional bear sighting. Water has a prominent presence throughout and there are also several strategically placed bunkers. Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a layout that will force you to be creative with your shot making but it's still approachable enough for high handicappers to tackle with confidence. If you're looking to get in even more golf, sister club Honey Bee is located almost right next door.

Winter Conditions
Course is still recovering from an east coast winter. Grass is thin throughout and non existent on most tee boxes. All around the greens is basically hitting off of mud *ON ALL HOLES* The sand traps were actually is phenomenal condition compared to everything else. I'll give it a few weeks before trying to play here again.
Saturday 1-12-19
The course was in great condition considering the heavy rains. The staff was friendly and very accommodating and although there were " soft" areas in the fairway, the course played 90° which allowed for a nice pace.
Great course
Under drier conditions, this cours would be my go to course. Staff is really friendly and helpful.
Don't Play After a Rain
So, I feel bad for the superintendent, I really do. The course conditions are surely not a reflection of his hard work, but stuff beyond his control...stuff that I'm sure he's tried to fix and has been stymied.
The conditions were terrible. 13 of 18 tees have little to no grass on them, causing them to be nothing but mud after a rain two days earlier. When I say mud, I mean the stuff that comes up an inch when you step on it, not just damp ground. This is because the course has too many trees blocking out sunlight for the tees. Beyond that, the course had extensive standing water in every fairway. The course has drainage systems in place, but they certainly do not work. It was difficult to walk the course because of how much standing water and mud was all over the course. The greens were in fair shape and I suppose the layout is pretty good with decent variety, but the conditions were so poor that it's hard to tell. I'd probably recommend playing here, but not within a week or so of any rainfall. I feel like conditions such as these are things that the course should tell a person about on the phone if he or she calls to make a tee time/check on availability.
Very good course layout
The course was wet and soggy due to heavy rain here in Virginia Beach, VA.
It was cart path only, very messy. Other than the wet course, it was a very nice layout.
Greens are great.
Greens ran great but fairways, and roughs were thin. Ground was stiff and dry. Great views
Beautiful Course
Quiet, beautiful area, look for the bent trees at 18.
Good course
Tee boxes need help.Nice playing where there are no houses. Nice day to play
stumpy lake
older course but well maintained; doesn't drain very well after rain.
Stumpy Lake
I played here for the first time with coworkers today. The course itself was in very good shape, but the tee boxes need a lot of work. Several didn’t have grass, but I guess that’s why you use a tee. The course had received a lot of rain and was cart path only which slowed down the pace of play. Would love to come back when the course is dryer.
Tree lined Fairways
Really nice course. Staff was friendly and helpful. Tight fairways lined with trees. Very nice greens and fairways. Rough was thick and not easy to hit out of but was mown. Some of the tee boxes could use some maintenance, but were playable. Played with another person we played in a little over 3 hours. I would recommend playing this course.
Beautiful Day
Greens are in excellent shape. Fairways could use some attention with many very thin or bare spots.
Tough fromt
The front nine tee boxes are in awful shape, some of the fairways are suspect, greens overall were in very good shape. Back nine was much better
Great Experience
Stumpy Lake is in great condition! I have played this course before but they have really improved the quality of this experience. Beautifully groomed fairways and greens, and the sand traps were filled with sand (Yeah) and raked perfectly. It was a pleasure to play and the staff was right there to politely make sure that the pace was moving.
I would definitely urge you to check the course out - you won't be disappointed!
Greens in great shape.
Course is in good shape. Fairways a bit patchy but greens were very good.
Old course, basic layout, wide fairways, beautiful trees
My dad and I teed off at 10am on a very-hot June day, and we basically had the course to ourselves, so no issue with pace of play.
If you like your 18 holes mostly straight and flat and open, if you like your 18 holes framed by trees on both sides, and if you like wide fairways, this is the course for you. It's an old track, so it lacks curves and mounds of more modern courses.
Condition of the course was mixed. The greens were generally in good shape. The fairways were consistently OK, but there are better elsewhere in town. The tee boxes were not as strong. The course now has six tees on each hole, with two forward tees sitting in front of the traditional tee box. The forward tee boxes are not yet mature, and barely covered in grass in many places. Also, the course took a heavy rain the night before we played, and there was a lot of residual standing water in various places. The forward tee boxes were generally muddy with not enough grass filled in.
This is a small complaint, however. We enjoyed the classic holes and layout. This is absolutely a scorer's course, if you can keep the ball straight inside the generously-wide fairways.
Enjoyed it!
I live two hrs away just north of Richmond and drove down to play 18 with a great friend who resides at the Beach. It’s been a while since I played here, but once off the first tee, past enjoyment of the course came rushing back. The fairways were in decent shape. A couple tee boxes could use some work. Greens were running very slow but true. The bunkers looked like they had not been worked in a while. The staff was wonderful and very polite. I will return!
