Stumpy Lake Golf Course
About
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones design that provides a unique golfing experience. This scenic layout is routed across a 1,400-acre nature preserve that is absent of any commercial or residential development for miles. The golf course wraps around its namesake lake, which has a canoe and kayak launch as well as a fishing pier. Deer, fox, and eagles are frequently seen on the course and there has even been the occasional bear sighting. Water has a prominent presence throughout and there are also several strategically placed bunkers. Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a layout that will force you to be creative with your shot making but it's still approachable enough for high handicappers to tackle with confidence. If you're looking to get in even more golf, sister club Honey Bee is located almost right next door.

Unhelpful staff
I booked my tee time through golf now, and had put in to play on a Sunday and somehow the date got reverted to Wednesday. I get an email on Thursday showing that I missed my tee time and was being charged full amount for not show. I immediately call golf now to find out how my time I thought I had booked for Sunda got moved to Wednesday and told them I may have made the mistake and not noticed it changed back, but never the less I wanted to still play Sunday. I knew there woukd be a difference in price which I was more than happy to pay if they would have moved my day to Sunday and worked with me. The manager of the proshop Jessie was of no help or understanding of the issue. It's just sad that a business establishment would rather lose business than to have worked with me on it and kept me playing. I understand the cancellation fees and what not but I feel it would have been different if I just wanted a refund and didn't want to play but to turn away golfers who want to play at your course and have no customer service I feel is bad for buisness. Ended up going to Virginia Beach National (First Tee) and played 18 Sunday. I'm not upset about the lost money I'm upset that the course was unwilling to work with someone who wanted to come play at there course for the first time. I play golf pretty regularly and can promise Stumpy Lake will never get anymore of my money.
First time player
I'm used to pristine greens. Fairways are always overrated so I'll just say the rough was kind. I've been in a funk for about a month or so until I came to stumpy lake. I'm a 12 handicap and shot 86 here so about right on. No complaints. The greens we're true to the read and speed. Had a good time. Beat my nemesis for the first time ever so the course gets high marks from me just for that. I was on the greens in regulation 50 percent of the time from the normal people tees. I'm 50. I play a lot and play a lot of the peninsula courses including all the Williamsburg courses with the exception of Kingsmill which many can't ever play. 4 stars for me. I will be back. Thanks stumpy for getting my Mojo back. Btw I played when it had not rained for a while.
Greens Are in Trouble!
The greens are in terrible condition....the worse I've ever seen them. Also, they allowed a shot gun start tournament to start while regular play had not yet do finished from earlier tee times severely backing up play. I plan to curtail my play until the greens improve.
Al1639658,
I'm sorry for the conditions of the greens and the shotgun.
We missed judged the weather and hopefully will have the greens back to normal soon.

Hampton Roads Golf Courses
Stay away as of July 2017
I haven't played this course since around May of this year and it has fell apart. The greens are in terrible shape, the worst I've ever seen them. I used to like this course, however the conditions will not allow me to play this for a long time. The other annoying part about Stumpy Lake is it seems as if every time I play regardless of time they are always cutting the grass. 2pm in the afternoon and an army of mowers are following the flow of golfers. It is super annoying not to mention the fairways are browning so they're just kicking up dust. I was extremely upset with today's round due to the constant sound of a mower and the bad conditions, so upset they I came up here to review the course as I barely book on golf now anymore Bc I most walk nine. Stumpy Lake is also having a tournament this weekend, the players are in for a shock. Extremely over priced for those conditions so please stay away
u000007662320,
I'm sorry about our greens, We missed judged the weather for June/July. And we are working hard to get everything back to normal.
I'm very sorry about the grounds crew. With 409 Grass we have to wait till the dew burns off for us to mow them.
We would love for you to give us another try on us, once we are back to normal.

Good layout
We found the course very enjoyable. Like the layout. Allowed us to use a number of clubs and required some shotmaking.
Pleasant Round
Booked online late the night before and was scheduled to play with a 3some. Arrived early prior to the arrival of the 3some. Course was open for play so I played alone with no one in front or behind me. Course was wet from prior days of rain but it was a very pleasant and relaxing round. Greens are in good condition. Looking forward to the fairways catching up.
A little wet but still a great day of golf.
Even after heavy rains the day before , the course played very well. The surrounding nature preserve added to the overall enjoyment of the round.
Pretty good
Unique layout for this area. Not a house on the property. Tree lined holes. The Bermuda grass fairways haven't quite woken up yet. Greens were firm and in good shape (just wish people would fix their pitch marks on the greens!).
The pro shop guy wasn't the friendliest. As my group made the turn (in 1 hour 30 min) we saw a bunch of groups being sent off # 10. When we brought this problem up in the pro shop it was basically met with a shrug. Back nine took 2 1/2 hours.
All in all the course is good. Not overly difficult but fun to play
Great Course for the casual golfer
We played Stumpy Lakes for the first time. Beautiful course set in natural park area. Very peaceful. No houses or roads. Interesting holes with lots of doglegs and some holes with water in play. Great for the casual golfer, challenging but open. You will need to hit over water in a few places but the water is not overly wide. Course was in good shape for a public course, some bare spots but the greens are in good shape. Most greens have some slope on them which adds to the fun.
The staff is super friendly, from the desk to the starter and through to the café on site.
Overall a great golf experience.
Stump is more than a dump
Really enjoy this course. this was my second time playing this course and it just has a relaxed vibe to it. Beautiful layout back in the woulds and kinda lets you get away from the noise of cars and other distractions. Massive points for this courses driving range. If you want to go somewhere to just hit range balls and work on your swing or short game this is the place to do it. The large basket is stupid big I think about 100 balls and I split one with my friend and we still didn't use them all before playing 18. Great course, great staff, great place to play.
Fun course
The staff at the front desk have always been friendly to me. Stumpy Lake GC is situated within a natural preserve, so the scenery you get while playing the course is fantastic. Unfortunately, the geese in the preserve tend to leave their mark all over the course as well. The course layout allows for a variety of strategies for every hole; off the par 4/5s you can play the long ball or play for position. Bunkers and water hazards are employed in just the right (or wrong, depending how you look at it) places to create a challenging course layout. The greens are challenging, as their speed varies from hole to hole.
Not Bad at All
First time on course, greens good, fairways better than average, staff fantastic.
Robert Trent Jones course
Had a nice paced round starting around 11:00 am. From out of town, but played here a few times. Course can be a little rough as drainage is bad in areas, and I think they are limited to fertilizer use due to nearby Stumpy Lake. (it may be a city water reservoir, no motor boats allowed on lake either). But it is a good layout and good value for a Robert Trent Jones Sr. course.
Poor Condition
You can tell there must not be enough money to maintain this course. Tee boxes have new seed thrown down but no aeration and they're hard as a rock. Tee's left on the tee boxes don't make for an inviting walk up. Fairways have significant damaged areas and the greens are pot marked a skidded. Bunkers aren't too bad though, with enough sand to make a decent shot from them. I played early in the year and liked the layout enough to come back. I wouldn't recommend it even for $25, and I'll select another course for my next round.
Stumpy Lake
Great course in great conditions!
