Stumpy Lake Golf Course
About
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones design that provides a unique golfing experience. This scenic layout is routed across a 1,400-acre nature preserve that is absent of any commercial or residential development for miles. The golf course wraps around its namesake lake, which has a canoe and kayak launch as well as a fishing pier. Deer, fox, and eagles are frequently seen on the course and there has even been the occasional bear sighting. Water has a prominent presence throughout and there are also several strategically placed bunkers. Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a layout that will force you to be creative with your shot making but it's still approachable enough for high handicappers to tackle with confidence. If you're looking to get in even more golf, sister club Honey Bee is located almost right next door.

Horrible Golf Pro, VERY UNPROFESSIONAL:!!
On a busy day at Stumpy the a starter decided to let a group of three go out with two sets of clubs. Now everywhere else I go that is a big no no, but not here. Its not big deal to them. I asked a Marshall why the guys were let on and he said he had no clue but said that they would have to rent a set for the back nine. The original starter was not at the first tee when I came around after my nine to ask him. I went in to confront the management . That jackhole was no help either. He just said that the guys went off when he wasn't there. I asked why he let them go back out without renting a set of clubs for the back nine. He said because they had already played nine so it was not a big deal. When the sign says one bag per player I expect each player to have their own clubs. Not share so people have to wait even longer on a hot busy day for some jackhole to wait for his buddy to come back to him so he can play his ball. The so called pro was very unprofessional and even cursed at me. No wonder this is all he can do. I will not be giving any more of my money to that golf course. Make it right Stumpy! Loev the course but I will NOT be back.
Stumpy review
It's hard to rate the conditions because it's spring time, and the course is raw from the winter.
great course for the average golfer
I love this course it has it difficult holes an it's an easy holes but it's not a course you can just go at. There are some holes you have to think ball placement . The only weakness I can see about the course is its bunkers. They need more sand.
great value and experience.
Great time. Good pace of play and best greens in the area.
Great Dog Leg Course
Truly enjoyed the challenge of the course. Lot's of dog leg holes!!
Improved Course Conditions Make This A Gem
I've played at Stumpy Lake on and off through the years. For those unfamiliar with the layout, it is an early example of Robert Trent Jones, Sr's work. Stumpy Lake can be a relatively long (from the back tees) but straightforward course. There's little elevation change except on 15 and 18 where water creeps in from the right fairway across the front of each green and some of the greens are raised from the fairways--otherwise, this course is almost flat as a pancake. There are also some doglegs (1, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 13, and 17), but many of the holes are dead straight from tee to green. If you keep it in the fairway, you can score on this course.
Nevertheless, I was very happy with the course conditions, especially the greens, when I played there on Friday, November 13, 2015. The greens were in the best condition I've ever seen at Stumpy; the fairways, although wet from recent rain, were playable and generally in good condition; the tees, unfortunately, were in no more than OK shape, with areas on several tees bare to dirt which had also turned muddy from the recent rains. Although the course is in a heavily developed area of Virginia Beach, it's also set well off the road with Stumpy Lake surrounding it and woods bordering almost every hole--helping keep things relatively quiet but also adding some challenge should your tee shots stray.
We played in less than four hours. The folks in the pro shop and at the grill could not have been nicer. With off-season pricing, you could play here for less than $30, which I think is an outstanding value. If course conditions can be maintained at the level I saw, I'll be a more frequent visitor.
My Review
Played 9 holes because it was my girlfriend's first time playing. She had an awesome time and might be a golfer after this.
Very enjoyable morning of golf
We only wanted to play nine holes and had a great time. Course was well groomed and played very easy. The front nine was being spiked so we had only the back nine available which was fine for us. The cost for a cart and nine was $21 each which was right in our price range. Had a very enjoyable 2 hours of golf stared at 10 finished at 12 with no hold ups....then able able to enjoy an afternoon at the beach.
Amazing course sitting on a beautiful lake
This is one of the best courses for challenge and value nestled in quiet setting. I luv this course for many reasons, an awesome course to play woth friends or alone. It you play alone you are alone you are surely bound ti make a new friend. Great venue.
Good Value, Fun Course
The course is pretty decent for the $44 I paid to ride on a Sunday morning. The tee boxes were in fine shape, the fairways were good, and the greens were average. There were plenty of ball marks that look like they were fixed but then didn't heal properly. Other than that the greens rolled pretty nicely. I don't remember a putt going offline, and they weren't as slow as I would expect for a mid-to-low range public course in mid-August, given how hot and dry it has been.
The course layout was interesting in spots. There are lots of places where you can't hit driver because of doglegs. It is hard to tell how far away the tree line is in places because the course is so flat. I recommend a range finder. There are a few holes that are tight with water down one side, but it demands a long tee shot. Other than that, the hazards are positioned in a way that most aren't really in play for decent golfers. My only complaint is that the par 3's are highly uninteresting. They are essentially identical to each other, all are about 195 yards from the blues, with a bunker on each side of the green on the front. You can run it up on all of them since there is nothing up front. Would like to see the distances varied a little more and maybe a bunker up front and a water hazard thrown in.
The place was packed even at 7:30 am. Even though I was in a twosome stuck behind several foursomes, we still got around in about 4 hours and 15 minutes.
The clubhouse and snack bar was nice, didn't eat anything, but small Powerades were $2.75, which is a little steep. The driving range was average. The balls were sort of a hodge podge of different balls, but the practice ground had decent grass, and it was long enough with a variety of targets to warm up. I wouldn't make this your preferred practice facility, but it is good enough to get loose going through your whole bag.
This was one of my first experiences with GolfNow, and there was a little issue with the booking. I found an opening at 7:20 am paired with a twosome. It was super easy to book, and I had a spot. When I got there, they were going to put another single in with us, making us a foursome. Then, the twosome I was supposed to go off with showed up as a foursome. Apparently some time after I booked my round (the day before) through GolfNow, the guys in the twosome called the pro shop and added two players, making them a foursome. The pro shop let them do it (despite the fact that I was now booked into their group), so my spot was essentially double-booked. Me and the other single were now without a tee time, but instead of bumping us, they just slid us in behind the tee time we were supposed to play in. The starter complained that this happens all the time with GolfNow, and that they didn't need it because the course is always full before it came along. I'm not sure if it is a course issue or a GolfNow issue, but the two need to coordinate a little better so this doesn't happen. This starter dealt with the problem very well, despite the fact that I was visibly annoyed, but if I had a different kind of starter, I might have been shuffled into the queue waiting for an opening. If they are going to offer GolfNow, then they need to make sure they use the technology in the pro shop instead of reverting to their paper tee sheets.
Great value, challenging course
One of those courses that I always want to go back to. The staff is pleasant ( especially Steve ) and the golf is always good! I highly recommend it! I will say, the heat has been rough on our local greens, but they putted clean.
Decent course, great value
Course is decent. Non-repaired ball marks are a VB disease. Not including the ball marks, the greens could be in better shape.
A great trip around a lake !
This is a 1950's style course with smaller greens and fewer bunkers. There are no houses on the course, so you are one with nature. Water comes into play on 5 holes. The course is well maintained, and the green fee is very reasonable. It is a great place to play !
Fun times
I love this course, the only thing I would have any complain about were the Greens were fluffy and slow. The tee boxes are in pretty good shape the fairways were clean and cut to the right length overall I had a lovely day with some friends shut up pretty good score will be back soon. You want a good burger for lunch go to Stumpy Lake Golf Course eat at the diner in there people that work there are really nice and friendly and they cook a mean burger.
Stumpy Lake
This was my first visit to Stumpy Lake. The staff was very friendly. The course layout was interesting but I only got to play 12 holes due to a thunderstorm. The greens were on the slow side and the fairways had some patchy areas. The pace of play was a bit slow for me. Two hours and 20 minutes for the front nine.
I would go back and play it again.
Fun course
Really enjoyed my round. Friendly staff. Some nice challenging holes and some easy.
Would recommend and play again.
Peaceful course near big city
We had a day to fill before driving from Norfolk to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Found this course on GolfAdvisor. Really enjoyed it. Staff and local players were very friendly. Back nine was much prettier than front nine. Fairways and greens were in pretty good shape, but the area around the greens were fairly bare. Enjoyed the course.
Beau terrain mature
Pour ceux qui aime un terrain de golf boisé, fairway large, c'est un beau terrain en pleine nature.
