English Turn Golf & Country Club is a Jack Nicklaus design that was crafted in 1988 to host the New Orleans PGA Tour event. Nicklaus designed the course to be enjoyed equally by spectators and golfers, incorporating gallery berms and spectator mounds throughout. This challenging design is known for its undulating greens that will test even the most seasoned players. Each hole has a unique design that combines strategically placed bunkers, including large waste bunkers, and sloping grass swales. There is also carefully sculpted mounding along the edges of the fairways. On top of that, water comes into play on nearly every hole. English Turn's signature hole, the 15th, is a tricky par 5 with an island green but it's the final hole, a par 4 with water all along the left side, that is rumored to be the golf course's toughest.

Missing the Small Details

Arrived to a very empty parking lot and as I was more than halfway to the golf shop, a young college kid with no uniform or nametag rolls up and asks if Id like help w clubs. At this point on a dead day, he missed the chance to get my clubs. Also looked scruffy and not even staff. Club house lights in the locker were off. Bathroom and lounge smelled like my grandparents' stale moth ball filled house. Time to redo that locker room. Urinal with paper sign on it. Guy in the golf shop sat down the three times I saw him before teeing off. Was not interested in being at work or even conversing. Starter caught me by the putting green in his covered cart. No uniform or name tag to even resemble a course employee. Never saw him on the course given it was empty. Stuck behind a twosome from hole 10 and beyond. All the foursomes including the HP that teed off at 1130 or later caught up to us and the twosome behind us. A couple of the bunkers had weeds growing in them through the sand. The girl at the turn stand was sitting on the patio instead of being behind the window. Greens, tees and fairways were overseeded and in great condition. Fairway on 13 was sopping wet and we made marks not paying attention. Probably could use some roping or cart path only.

$6.50 for a powerade is ridiculous at the turn. The lounge again smelled stale and old. I chose not to bring my client in the clubhouse for that specific reason and the overall quality of the locker room and turn bathroom. Shop attendant in the PM was abit friendlier but also sat down the whole time. Also prioritized the phone rather than customers in person.

Place used to host the PGA event for 40 years and was a premier place to live and play. Clubhouse is probably too big for the current demands and the staff couldn't be less excited to be there. It's not Metairie CC or NOCC but I am confident they could learn a bit from those two prestigious clubs and bring English Turn back to prominence. Look at it from a fresh perspective as a first timer and make some minor changes to create a more welcoming experience.

The Round that wasn’t

I did not get to play it. English Turn’s Pro contacted us at 8:30 AM on the day we were to play at 10:00AM. He advised that at the last minute a decision was made to have an 8:00 AM shotgun instead of tee times. This was on Thanksgiving Day as English Turn GC wanted to send all their employees home early. I get that but we were left without be able to play the course after traveling 18 hours from Canada. GOLFNOW has yet to refund us our green fees. Tried in vain to contact a live agent at GOLFNOW. Would like to see that happen soon.

Kind regards,

John from Amherstburg,

Vaca

Gold course was great. Upon arrival to the fist tee we met James. He was nothing short of amazing. Gave us helpful hints about the course and even took it upon himself to make sure we have a few pictures so that we would not need to take ourselves he was the beginning to a great day. I would give an overall 5 star rating however there were no food options. It would have been nice to know the kitchen was closed upon checking in for our tee time. Unfortunately I am only giving 4star due to lack of food , drinks , or amenities, all were none existent, very disappointing. I would recommend this course just check to make sure that everything is available that the website says .

GREAT but...

So, I loved this course!! James, the starter, AMAZING!! He was very well spoken, funny, and overall great energy for this job!

I feel like the food/kitchen need work, 20 minutes of waiting time, on a sandwich and a chili dog seemed to be extreme. I also, repeated my drink order the the wait staff twice and she still got my drink order incorrect. The price of the food didn't compliment the food. I'm sorry!! When you're out in the sun and working an appetite, the food is important! ☹️

BUT, everything else was absolutely top tier. Clean, friendly, and great pace. ❤️

This was a great course and fun to play! The staff was great and made our visit there memorable. We would definitely play there again if we visit New Orleans. We have told our friends that travel that this course is definitely worth a visit!

Very fun course

Very challenging fun course. Got it on a deal so was a fair price. A few greens were a little beat up but we were told. Our starter was amazing and extremely friendly. I'm pretty sure it was James and he would get 10 stars for staff friendliness. Overall a great fun day, would play again. Pace was a little slow but not terrible by any means.

English Turn

The course was in great shape as usual. They were working on some of the tee boxes but the temporary tee boxes were fine.

Old English

Played here on a Tuesday morning. Nice driving range, short game area and practice green. Tulane ladies golf team was practicing on the range and a pro was giving lessons. Standard old guy starter. Went off solo, behind a two-some with 2 carts. Pace was good.

On 8 I turn around and there’s a single that somehow crept up behind me. I make the turn and grab a bloody, beer and chips for $30. Hot dogs were “unavailable”. The guy behind me has taken the liberty of playing through. That’s fine. I watch him slice his tee shot 150 into a tree.

I have been playing golf for 33 years. What happens next was heretofore inconceivable. Before I get out of my cart to tee off on 10 a guy and his teenage son pull up to the tips and tee up. I hit my tee shot and they proceed to hit theirs. Without saying anything this guy plays the hole like I’m not even there. He doesn’t let his son play. They team up with the other guy who played through without asking.

Now understand I’m a single digit handicap and will play a round in 2 1/2 hours if there’s no traffic. Pace was not the issue. Trash is the issue. Pure trash golfers ruining our sport.

Fantastic value

Staff was friendly and welcoming. Ensured that I knew my way around and starter was completely on it. Gave great explanations about course and features. Was very helpful in helping my wife (who doesn’t play golf enjoy her time there with pictures and cart service ( getting her to the hole to help with spectating ). The course itself was very challenging and met all expectations. Will plan to tackle it again on next visit to New Orleans.

Staff

Regardless of how the course plays the staff at English Turn will make you return for another round. The starters are awesome, they even make their way out on course to see how your round is going. Now the course love the layout rough is not thick but your ball will disappear track your line. This course is on my return list when I in New Orleans

Instant Favorite

I really enjoyed this course. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Course layout was great - an instant favorite. Facilities were really good. Felt like a high end private club. I will play here every time I come to NOLA. This is a much better course/play than TPC and much easier to get to from French Quarter.

Only negative was some temporary tee boxes on a couple holes.

Great Course

A lot of water on this course. Cutters have a advantage in my opinion. The 15th hole is a island green have fun 🤩. I was second player out on a Monday finished round in 2:45 minutes guy in front let me play through. Starters are nice and will give you pointers on the course. I will add this course on my rotation while in New Orleans. Starter will suggest playing from white. I played Blue/White. I will play Blues next time.
