Greatly improved
Much improved since July, 2014. Fairways are nice; greens are smooth and roll true. Pro shop and other facilities have been reconfigured. Staff was professional and very helpful. I was impressed with this municipal course and will return.
Take a look
Walked it in just under three hours starting in the mid afternoon, playing through a walking foursome on the front and only waiting once, on the 18th tee. The course is long in places - four of the pars fours are 420 yards or longer from the whites - but in great shape for this time of year. The sand trap on 18 was more of a lake and couple of other bunkers were very damp. The greens were nice but the number of ball marks in need of repair was a sad comment on the folks that play this, and every other course in the Tucson area. The is a great deal of distance from green to tee especially from 16 to 17. The number of drinking fountains isn't high enough for the summer but fine otherwise. There traveling snack carts are seemingly everywhere but not pushy. Plus, playing in the afternoon and walking it cost about half what it does to play many other area courses that are not nearly as nice.
Winter Golf
OBGolf has done a fine job managing turf transition in their first year with city courses. Silverbell on 10/30 was our third course with new grass, and it offered excellent conditions. Of course Silverbell's wide-open charms are still in effect. Even so, sand traps were soggy and impossible. We hope that someday city courses will have better sand. Also, we wonder why more effort isn't put into bettering duck/bird habitat around extant water holes. More brush and cover is good for ducks. Add some cattails and interesting shrubs. It seems silly to have removed it all. Golf courses are useful nature preserves and need to be managed as such.
course has nice features
Was in very nice shape when you consider they will shut down for over seeding next week.
oh where oh where have the rangers gone?
Pretty much says it all. There was a 4some ahead of us that his 2 drives each and would come together in the middle of the fairway and stand there in a bunch before going to their ball and hitting, as if they were having bets on who hit the best ball and having to settle the bets every hole.
I am so disappointed because loved Silverbell in the past when they had a ranger going around and keeping the golfers on pace.
Silverbell has improved
This was my second time playing Silverbell since OB Sports took over management. The course conditions have become more challenging as the rough is now ... rough! The fairways are more defined due to the length of the rough and one should take care to stay out of rough. Locating your ball can be difficult should you stray from the short grass. All in all, an excellent day on a great course.
Too much rain, grass too long
Usually a great course, hadn't been cut due to rain. course maintenance crew mowing mid-late morning. Huge grass clumps everywhere - made course more challenging than it neded to be. Otherwise, course in great shape!
nice day out
Day started off with a bucket of balls with my oldest son then to the course. The course was in good shape and the greens and tee boxes were also looking good as usual. I saw the cart girl a few times while out there and got a couple beers and soda for my son. got my first sub 100 round for this course and was happy to say the staff was super friendly. Only bad point was course had a lot of golfers in front so play was a little slow.
Silver Bell Experience
beautiful sunny day with the usual wind. impressed with the changes so far. Moving and updating the pro shop is nice. New carts great. Staff very friendly. fairways and greens in good shape. new flags with gps and pin position flags a plus. New beverage cart and same great driver who really makes you feel welcome. hadn't played here in awhile and she was positively overjoyed to see us. restrooms had new modern paper holders and sinks had new working faucets. Toilet bowls could use a little work. new ball washes with soapy water in them that worked was also a nice touch. Having sand in the bottles full and on both sides was also good. we had a mid morning tee time and the front nine was really slow, a little over 2.5 hours. One foursome was leaving 1.5 to 2 holes open in front of them and wouldn't anybody through. when we made the turn we talked with the starter and he was kind enough to let us play the front nine over again to avoid the backup. in addition he said he would go out and talk to the foursome and see if he could get them to move along or let groups through. the new management still has a ways to go to make the course really good. the snack bar could use some updating in line with the pro shop. A ranger would also be helpful to keep groups moving, replace or repair their divots, not walk their hand carts across the greens, and keep carts a reasonable distance from greens. The next thing they need to key on is the so called sand traps. there is no sand, just stones, loose dust, and hard pan.
all in all the improvements were a welcome change and I will be playing the course more often from now on. keep up the good work.
The course is always in great conditions
Silverbell has always been a favorite of mine. since the redo of the course about 8 years ago, it is a little more challenging. The only issue I have is the sand traps. Hardley no sand, just hard dirt and doesn't make it easy to use a sandwedge and get out of the bunkers. The city should invest in a few truck loads of sand for the bunkers.
8/24/14....keep it in the fiarway!!
This is the best that I have seen Silverbell in a long time! Greens were slow but consistently smooth throughout...fairways were good, and the rough was wet and long (as it should be!) Keep it in the fairway and enjoy your day! Played in 3 hours 50 minutes on a Sunday morning!
Great to see improvements here!
There are a number of things that still need to be fixed/corrected but there has been significant progress.
Cut the greens
The course was in good shape, bunkers were like concrete, the greens were terrible bumpy & not cut. I guess that's monsoon golf in Tucson.
I would play the course again, it's not too expensive.
second time playing
Havent played this course in a couple of years. The smell has died down dramatically. Everything was in great shapealthough greens were slow it was in excellent condition. and the new carts were very nice.
Excellent golf course design
I haven't played here in a year but was quite pleased with the condition and speed of play. The fairways were recently mowed and provided a nice landing for a well struck ball. The greens were smooth and putted true. The fairways are generous but most are lined with mature trees. There are two lakes that could come into play on about four holes. There are several hard packed sand traps. All things considered, this is an interesting and fun golf course to play.
Pretty decent for a Tucson Muni
While you won't get perfect fairways and greens here...you will get an intresting layout with a nice mix of holes. The playing conditions are not bad. Price of the tee times is pretty good, so an all around solid choice.
this course plays long alot of challenging par4
course is in great shape new management has done excellent job,it use to be i never wanted to play city courses now i do ,fairways and greens in great shape.now they can work on getting new carts and improving restrooms on course
Silverbell golf
Nice layout, good to walk. Course was in good condition and the greens rolled well. Only complaint is the cart are old and the brakes in ALL the carts are bad.
Good course
The course is in good shape but the bunkers are two hard. Question/ What can be done to bunkers so they are not so hard?
sand traps
every sand trap that one of are foursomes was in was water drenched. this is always the case for us because we tend to play some of the earlier tee times.so i am saying lack of sand and drenched traps and lack of drinkable water on the course. how hard is it to have water available ever4y third hole?
