Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
About
Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Canyon 9 signature hole Photo submitted by RockinDoc on 10/05/2012
Steele canyon great times
The greens are fast and fairways are narrow but we needed the challenge . Watch out for the canyon shots you might lose a few balls just be prepared , overall this course is full or fun .we will be back soon
Best value in town
No better course for forty dollars.Beautiful mountains and valleys, fairways are in outstanding condition and the greens were not completely back but still 8 out of 10.Gps in the carts would be great.Canyon/Ranch great elevation changes.Course is fair but can make you pay. keep it in play.
HATS OFF FOR GARY PLAYER!!
The course mangement is the best in S. D. county. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The course was in EXCELLENT condition and greens are some the best I have played. The only thing wrong with this course is, it to far from Carlsbad....
Steele Canyon Golf Course, Challenging But Fair
The course was in excellent shape with the exception of the range which needs work. The course of play was slightly better than 15 minutes per hole which enabled us to have a pleasant round.
I must thank the Groundskeepers for stopping the mowing equipment when one is playing a shot, it is much appreciated.
William Parker
Course was good, but pairings were much to be desired.
Course was in very good condition with the greens rolling nicely. My only issue was with the pro shop. We made a tee time for 651am as a threesome. The pro shop decided to put a single with us and made us a foursome. Then they put a twosome right behind us. This made no sense to us and we eventually had to let (2) twosomes and threesome go ahead of us. Poor planning by the pro shop.
If you decide to stop by after lunch, definitely get the Thai Chili wings. Best item on the menu.
Always good
Course was in great shape as usual. Greens rolled great and the course played fast.
Super Course
I played Canyon/Ranch nines at this course and I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the course. Every aspect of the course was just fantastic! The scenes were beautiful being at the foot of the mountains! Worth every penny I paid!
Nice Course -- Reasonable Price
Steele Canyon is one of the best public courses in San Diego County. If possible, you want to play the Canyon and Ranch nines. The Meadow nine is not quite as interesting. The greens are firm and fast. The restaurant makes one of the best cheeseburgers I've ever tasted.
Great golf holes lots of fun
Our tee time was at 4pm we didn't have to wait long between holes. The fairways where great puting green was in great condition. Overall had a great time and awesome scenery.
World class premier course
Any golfer anywhere can be enthralled by this course. The conditions and maintenance are excellent. The balance of risk and reward is a thrill every time.
Course needs water
The greens were decent but the course was very dry and neglected. California needs rain. The Ranch layout is good. Overall, the course is too short for those who hit it long and overpriced for the non-resident.
Challenging for the average golfer
Hot Deal for $35 was perfect price. I can't believe their normal prices for no GPS in the carts. The fairway was in great shape and the greens were fast. I love this course but think they are too pricey.
"Great Course to TEST your Skill"
I really enjoyed playing the course. I played Canyon-Ranch and it was a good challenge for me. I have only been playing the game about 2 years now and average game is around 82-87 consistently. The greens are tricky and the fairways are in great shape. I will play this course again!
First time Steele Canyon
It was a windy day making this hilly course a challenge. I am looking forward to a return round without the wind. Scenery was really nice and some very picturesque tee shots.
beautiful scenic view and very calm circumstance to play
It is always amazing to play in this course. I always satisfied to your rounding management for the golfers not hurry.
Great Course
Had a wonderful day ! This place is great only wished rental clubs were reasonable.
We are sorry the rental clubs did not suit you during your experience at Steele Canyon. We carry all TaylorMade product from within the last 2 years and feel that for $65 including 2 sleeves of golf balls they are a great substitute and convenient for those golfers that do not wish to travel with extra luggage and fees throughout their trips.
Best if you have played before
Good course in great condition. Very pretty views on many holes. Some of the holes are difficult unless you have played the course before.
Course was challenging for a 25 handicapper
Great course with difficult features. First timer so had a few questions. Staff was friendly and never once rolled their eyes. Played a threesome with one 5 handicap and the other two of us 25 and 30 handicap. We as beginners decided to play best ball to try and not hold up the play too much. Worked out well and had a great day. If you are a beginner or short off the tee I would make sure I had plenty of balls. The scenery is beautiful and course is worked in well with the natural landscape.
Course looking good after spring maintenance
Played Meadow/Canyon with a bit of wind. Greens running slower than usual. Maybe still recovering. Only had to wait on a couple of holes. Overall, a great round
We are sorry your round was less enjoyable by having a single paired with your group. Our golf shop employee / starter was simply going by what was listed on our tee sheet as the single was booked at the same tee time as yours. Sometimes groups show up with less players than they reserved for or show up late for their tee times and we cannot pair up everyone perfectly into foursomes. It looks like your pace of play was still very good for a weekend morning despite your round being delayed by showing good etiquette and letting the groups play through. If you would like to contact us directly in the golf shop the next time you plan on visiting we will be happy to accommodate you as best we can.
