The three-nine layout delivers dramatic elevation changes and stunning scenery that consistently impress golfers unfamiliar with San Diego's hilly terrain. Friendly staff and well-maintained greens that hold up even after heavy rains make this course a reliable, rewarding choice.

Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

Great course

Probably the best course in San Diego. Recommend playing. Right now they are aerating the greens on Ranch course so I would recommend waiting a few weeks so you can play Ranch for your back 9

Great place and a challenge

We played the Canyon and Ranch nines. The course was in great shape and it posed many challenges. You really have to have a plan when hitting approach shots to the greens. Greens were fast and hard so holding the green was nearly impossible. We got a great value through Golf Now!!!

Tough but beautiful

I hope your hitting em' straight because this course will punish you for errant tee shots, There aren't any adjacent fairways to hit from. The fairways are perfect (if you get to hit from them) and the greens are true. If your having a bad round just grab a drink from the cart girl and enjoy the views.

Sand filled punched greens

The Meadow nine had punched and filled greens. Normally a facility would inform you of these conditions prior to play. We were not. We felt the the cost of playing here was far too great given these conditions. We did not enjoy this HALF of our round.

How about discounting for punched greens?

Booked a round at Steele Canyon, nothing on Golfnow indicated that the greens were aerated. Got to the course and after we paid were told that the back 9 was punched a week ago but that it wasn't too bad. It was bad. Large holes still present and very sandy. Not really worth trying to putt on. We all get the need to do maintenance but how about a discount. $80 is a bit steep for the back 9 greens being nearly unplayable.

True greens and great views

Fantastic pace of play at 8:30am, the ranch course was in perfect shape with very true rolling fast greens.
Meadows was our back 9 and besides a few burned out areas was also in great shape.
Greens on both tracks proved to be very difficult to hold but ran very true and smooth.
Total pace of play was under 4hrs which for a course of this caliber is near impossible to find in San Diego.
I will be keeping my eye out for deals at Steele weekly.

Holiday pace

Course is in good condition for this time of the year. Winter overgrowth is in play but manageable. Fun course if you have never played it. Easy drive from downtown.

extremely slow play

Normally great. Not that busy. 4 hour round would be easy. The starter hurried me to the tee saying i was late when in fact i was right on time. So i was already a bit edgy, come to find out they had 2 tournaments that they said nothing about. We were 3 groups deep waiting on each tee box. We had a 130 tee time and at dark at 615 were only able to complete 14 holes. And that was not even wanting to play anymore bc we had to wait so long. I was so upset i almost went in to proshop to get my money back and i have never done that before. Wont be going back there again until the nasty taste of yesterday fades away.

Mr. Ingrassio,

I am sorry you felt rushed upon your arrival to the golf course but as you found out it was a very busy day. For groups that do not arrive at least 10 minutes in advance of their tee times there is the possibility of getting bumped by a group that is early and ready, especially when dealing with late rate tee times and day of play bookings. As far as being informed of tournament outings that is not a possibility when booking through third party websites. If you were to call the golf shop directly our staff would gladly inform you how the day looks if you were to ask. We hope you do visit the course again in the future but I would recommend planning your round more in advance, especially during the weekends.

A good outing

Played as a threesome in February. Weather was a bit cool; course was in great shape. Lots of elevation change testing your club selection. Greens were in excellent shape and ran true. Played Canyon/Ranch and backside was more challenging. A fun course to play.

3 distinct nines

The course offers three different nines but the rotation is determined by the time of day.
Each of the nines has it's own unique character:
Canyon - the most difficult of the three. Very hilly with challenging par 3's.
Ranch - begins and ends with lots of elevation changes but the middle holes are in the flatlands.
Meadow - works it's way in and out of a housing development.
Relatively flat and in my mind the easiest of the three.
The greens were good but the fairways need water. Excellent practice facility onsite.

play it when you can

The Canyon course is the interesting 9 with elevation changes and some sloping fast greens. The Meadows course also has some nice holes but a couple of boring holes thrown in. We played during the week and the course had few golfers but I imagine during the weekend the rounds might go slow with so many hazards to avoid for average golfers.

Nice layout but need to improve condition

Played Canyon and Ranch. There were lot of elevation changes so if you're not used to that, it can be very difficult. Layout and variety of scenic holes are the strength of this course. Conditioning left me wanting more. Greens were mostly smooth and on the fast side. I enjoyed it and would play again at discounted rate.
