The three-nine layout delivers dramatic elevation changes and stunning scenery that consistently impress golfers unfamiliar with San Diego's hilly terrain. Friendly staff and well-maintained greens that hold up even after heavy rains make this course a reliable, rewarding choice.

Steele Canyon Golf Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Gary Player that is hailed as one of southern California's best courses. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. The Canyon, Ranch, and Vineyard nines each offer a different set of challenges. The Canyon/Ranch Course starts in an expansive canyon, climbs across dramatic elevation changes, and then wraps around an operating ranch. Free-roaming cattle wander all along the back nine. Although there are no blind shots, golfers will be faced with uneven lies and elevated greens. Steele Canyon's signature hole is the Ranch's par-4 third hole. The tee is perched 175 feet above the fairway and plays into the prevailing winds that blow from left to right. It is one of San Diego County's most memorable holes.

This course is scenic and serene.

Steele Canyon is one of my favorite courses and offers holes with variety of challenges. It has beautiful vistas and a lot of wildlife. The food is excellent and the staff is courteous and friendly. I highly recommend playing a round at this gem of a course.

One of San Diego's best

I really enjoy playing this course. I play to a 4 handicap and this course makes you earn everything. If you can't get off the tee successfully, this course is going to beat you up. But if you can keep out of all the hazards and place your shots in the wide fairways, you should have a pretty good score. Other than that, be careful for the huge group that plays on Tuesdays at around 12:30pm. They play as 5 somes, which really slows play down. Not sure why Steele Canyon allows this, but they did. Other than that, the course can typically be played in a matter of a 4 hours or less.

An excellent day with new friends

You never know what you might get when visiting a course for the first time. Steele Canyon qualifies as a destination course for those of us living on non-golf friendly climates. I was paired with a wonderful married couple, and we hit it off splendidly.

Difficult test throughout

I played while in town for a conference. I read that this was one of the overlooked gems in San Diego. It is phenomenal. Scenic, challenging, fair holes throughout are the main highlights and as a bonus, the cart seats are as comfortable as your bed. Play here for sure.

Greatly enjoyed the course.

A challenging layout that a cart is certainly necessary. Outstanding food and staff in the restaurant. Pro shop and outdoor staff were also very friendly. Many challenging holes with a wide variety of shots needed.

Very well maintained

I played with my brother on a Friday morning and the course was in great shape. Greens were fast and challenging. Hit many fairways. We were both very happy with the experience of playing the Ranch and Meadow courses for the first time. Will definitely play here again.

NIce Layout

The course has a nice layout and offers a pretty good challenge. We played Ranch and Meadow. Ranch has some nice elevation changes and meanders through Jamul Ranch with no houses on this nine. Meadow runs through part of the subdivision but is just as visually appealing. We all enjoyed the Meadow nine a little more. There are a few very challenging holes scattered throughout, but overall, the course is extremely playable with generous fairways and relatively large greens. One thing to note is there are a few forced carries that may be difficult for a beginning golfer. The Ranch had been aerated recently and the greens weren't very playable. Meadow was better, but still suffering from aeration of it's own. I look forward to playing here again once the greens have fully recovered.

Rainy Day Golf

I went to play on a rainy day, I needed my golf fix and this course was offered at a great price. It was cart path only and this was a really long day of golf. This is one of very few course that I would play cart path only.

Great course!!!!

This is one of the most challenging courses I've played. You are required to make every golf shot possible. Dog legs right and left, Elevated tee shots, hitting into elevation, thick roughs, soft bunkers, etc. You really have to think about your next shot and have good ball control to score well here. Highly recommended if your looking to challenge your game.
