Bunkers are brutal
Please put sand in the bunkers! It's really a crime. Effen concrete brah. The course is in very good to excellent condition otherwise. C'mon guys!
Thoroughly enjoyed
Will play again. Very friendly and helpful staff. Challenging golf course back nine more so than the front. One small complaint is the greenside bunkers could use more sand in them.
Overall review
It’s too bad that one apple can spoil the bunch. We came a long way to play and were impressed from the moment we walked in the course. Excellent atmosphere and staff at pro shop and bag drop off. This course is challenging and picturesque. We were paired with a couple of our caliber and we appreciated regular attendance from the cart girl. We knew based on our tee time it was going to be tight to finish 18, but at hole 10 we inquired about how quickly it would get dark and we were told to make a choice at hole 13 to proceed or not as it got too dark and the “Marshall” had to bring guests back in the dark. We were 15 minutes ahead of pace at this point. Well the Marshall hovered over us and we proceeded. At hole 15 when it was still dusk,he came and said we had to come back. We were still capable of seeing our ball and said we would continue. He said “ you will finish if I decide you are finished!” I proceeded to say “ I’ve paid good money to play and I’ll decide when I’m finished” he said “ everyone says that!”
I honestly was floored. I’ve never had a ruder Marshall and quite frankly this guy just wanted to go home on a Friday night. It completely angered the whole group and we got all 18 in and it was dark but we could still see and play. This is really a shame because it was our first time playing here but with all the choices of courses in the Palm Springs area it sure doesn’t give us incentive to come again.Hopefully you don’t have the same experience.
Great experience
What a wonderful day. Played in about 4 hours course is immaculate. Staff friendly, practice free and driving range very nice. Would and will come back to PGA west
Improving
Compared to last match 2024, the greens held better and rolled smoothly. Still they are dome of the most evil greens in the area.
Nice Course!
We had a 1:05 start, Marshals did an excellent job moving folks along, managed to get in 16 holes before the sun set. The course is in great shape.
Excellent
Only negative, being picky here, irons only on the range. Everything else, staff, conditions, carts, clubhouse and food was exceptional. Played in 4 hours and 22 min, for the difficult around the greens I think that was great. Played from the tips at a 5 index, 6,600 yards, Made the decision on distance, after playing moving up would have been less work. Challenging but what a day out there, sensational.
Slow and Slower
Again very slow. Chastised by ranger since my grandchild had his small clubs in my bag. Starter thought it okay. Ranger almost kicked me off the course since he did not have a big. This outfit does NOT like children on the course even if they are good golfers!!
Staff very rude
Front desk check in ladies very rude. We were threesome. Starter tried putting our single w another golfer in his cart. We told starter the single he was trying to put us with was leaving after nine holes and we weren’t going back to clubhouse to get another cart after nine. Starter came up with some comment said he couldn’t have that many carts out on course. Sorry we paid for the cart use for18 holes. Got tired of arguing with Marshal and he finally let us go. Marshals on every hole not doing their job keeping play moving.
Great shape
Greens were outstanding for this time of year. Pin placements were tough but a lot of fun, good speed on greens made this an enjoyable round.
Great Time on a Great Course
This was our 1st time playing the Dunes course. It lived up to our expectations after playing other courses at PGA West. Greens and fairways were in great shape. We will definitely be back!
Play again
Beautiful course with an excellent layout. Contours of many fairways make you pay attention to ball placement because it could easily roll up into the rough due to the side-to-side slope. But the fairways are generous in width so don’t let slopes deter you. And true to a Pete Dye course most greens were tiered and sloped presenting unique challenges of their own.
The only downside was that due to recent over seeding it was cart path only, which often required additional walking both up and down to get to your ball and back to the cart. If that is a concern definitely check into such restrictions before booking your round.
Otherwise, go play. You’ll throughly enjoy the facility and the support of the staff.
Dye Dunes
Although the course is short by today's standards, I'd recommend anybody above a 7-handicap move up to the 6,200-yard white tees. Approach shots that miss the endless parade of plateau greens end up in all sorts of collection areas and steep-faced traps. It's a short-game examination. The setting when the back nine heads toward the mountains is beautiful. The clubhouse can easily entertain for lunch or post-round drinks.
Slow Slow & Slower
For the amount of money being paid the pace of play totally distracts from the round. It was almost 4 hours when we were on the 13th and decided to leave since it was in a gridlock. I saw NO course rangers to monitor the situation. This has happened twice at this course. Never playing it again as it is too expensive for the poor experience.
