Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club

About
Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club is a Johnny Miller co-design that's a short drive from its sister Lakes Course. The two courses will never be mistaken for each other though. Ranch Course is a pumped up course that's big in almost every way. There are over 300 feet of elevation changes and in excess of 100 bunkers around the course.
Miller and his design partner John Harbottle III put together a course that plays as bold and showy as Las Vegas. Only it's located in Carson Valley, halfway in-between the more nature resort towns of Reno and Lake Tahoe.
The bunkering can be severe on Genoa Lakes' Ranch Course and the mountain scenery can be even more striking. Even though it's not far from the Lakes Course, the Ranch Course is definitely set up in its own world.
Miller gives golfers a fighting chance though and often the latitude to decide their own fate. Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes is full of risk-reward holes. Most notable might be No. 18. This 561-yard par 5 gives you not one, but two shots (minimum) where you must decide how much lake you want to try and cut.

Winter conditions and limitations
Back 9 open only due to water and maintenance conditions on front 9. All players had to play back 9 twice which caused congestion between starters and those making the turn. Round took 4 1/2 hours.
Ranch Challenge
Course is in very rough condition, with one par 5 reduced to a par 3 with no end in site for repair. The course needs a lot of work and before spring this course could get a lot worse. Price high for the condition of the course.
Where is the Marshall?
A threesome and a foursome ahead of me and plat was snail slow. Saw the Marshall on 1st tee, but that was it. Waited 10” each hole 4-9, and 15” on 10,11,12. I quit on 13.
Greens not in great shape and #4 was shortened to a par 3? Yikes. Not a good day out there.
Beautiful setting
You can tell the crew is doing what they can to get this course back in shape. Heading in a positive direction. Great warm up facilities.
Good value for the money
The course was in good shape, but the greens were recently punched.
don't waste your money
Tee boxes and fairways were terrible !! Had to hunt for grass !!
Greens still have heavy punch holes....
Traps unplayable !! Par five played as a 90 yard par 3.
At least 4 fairways cart path only ...
This course just reopened today after months of work.
It should have remained closed...
Staff very friendly, but tell you the course is in good shape...
They posted cart path only holes and temporary green on the par five at the course, but booked online so it didn't help... nothing about punched greens !!
This use to be a great course.. Sierra Nevada golf ranch.
Great course layout!
Course had some rough spots after opening due to water/drainage issues. No carts allowed on 4 holes. Also hole 4 (par 5) was temporarily reduced to a short par 3. Back 9 was a great! Beautiful views from several elevated holes!
Course conditions
Someone turned off the water. The majority of the course was dead grass. The greens were green and played well. There was heavy, dense, smoke coming from the Caldor fire, which was not the fault of the course. It added to the miserable conditions. Talked to the course manager after playing the course. Plans are in place to bring the course back to normal conditions. Seeding, watering, fertilizing, etc., will happen, but will take until spring 2022. I played this course before, when it was in very nice shape. Not sure how this happened, but I look forward to playing it in the spring.
Day at The Ranch
We were at Lake Tahoe area for my son's wedding and family was visiting from the east coast. Decided to take them down to Genoa Lakes GC for a round. Admittedly, we got a good deal at The Ranch course booking in advance on a discount site. The Club's website made both courses look great (complete with awesome photos) so we opted for the good deal at The Ranch. What a mess the course turned out to be. All we kept saying was "well, at least we got a good price....even if not a good "deal." We were told that they had some irrigation problems this summer and yes, it has been hot and dry. But the issues we saw went WAY beyond a short (or even long!) term irrigation problem. In many areas of the fairways, grass was not dry, it was non-existent, and has been for quite some time. The bunkers were unplayable, unless you didn't care about destroying your wedges in those rock pits. Balls hit straight down the middle of the "fairways" were sometimes unfindable as they rolled across the barren landscape wandering off to who knows where. Did we have fun? Sure, because we enjoyed each other's company and didn't take the golf seriously. For anyone that DOES take their golf seriously, this would have been a miserable day. Last point: there are houses currently being built along this course. I wonder how many of those home-buyers assume they are buying "golf course homes." Based on what I saw, this club may be putting its resources into keeping The Lakes course open and letting this one just fade away. If that is the plan, they are well on their way.
No water
Course was in absolutely horrible condition. Apparently no water for some time. Only greens watered.. In very rough shape, seems to be going back to desert. Nothing on GolfNow forewarned
mr how bad it was. I never would have driven 80 miles round trip to play this cow pasture. You should be ashamed for not telling people what horrible condition it is in.. very disappointed.
