Toka Sticks Golf Club
About
Unlike many other courses in Phoenix, the course at the Toka Sticks Golf Club was not done in a traditional desert-style. It is known amongst locals for having very fast greens, many of which are elevated. The old Toka Sticks course was originally a nine-hole course built in 1945 but in addition to making it an 18-hole, championship course, it has had many renovations in the years since to make it a more challenging and interesting course. There are stately trees present on the course call for straight shots in order to reach the narrow fairways. Two lakes are situated on the course that create water hazards that come into play on sever holes. There are also several well-placed sand bunkers throughout. Toka Stick Golf Club also offers a short game area, a putting green and a driving range.

Jesus Christ...Fix Your Bunkers, PLEASE!!!
I've played this course a number of times, and it's your run-of-the-mill, flat and very basic course. That's all well and good, but the bunkers are most likely some of the worst bunkers in the entire city. Calling them "bunkers" is probably the overstatement of the decade..extremely disappointing. The course is a bit of a drive for me, and if the bunkers were in better shape, I would consider playing there more often. However, with the hard-pan, no-sand excuse for what they're calling bunkers, makes this course a no-go for me. The thing I can't figure out is, how this course could fetch an over $100 green fee in the winter season for such poor conditions. If you value your ability to get of out well-conditioned bunkers with real sand, then you'll want to steer very clear of this place. Or, bring your own sand and dump some in the spot when you're in one of these traps.
Ok Play
I have played this course a few times. I like the layout of the course and the price. However this time the course was not in good shape, probably the worse I have seen it. Tee boxes were brown and dried up, very hard, lack of water. Some green were under repair and not in the best shape. Even the practice green was lacking and not even edged around the curbing with grass growing over the curbing and onto the pathway. Speaking of pathways, while riding in the cart numerous times had over grown bushes (oleanders) hanging into the path and had to drive out around them. Course was just not in good shape, no attention to detail.
Generally good, nice staff BUT
About six of the greens have large ugly repair spots on them that you would have to chip over if they are between you and the hole . They did set the holes generally away from the repairs but still…..
Great value course; in need of a ranger
I play this course often and consider it one of the few courses in the area where price matches up well to value. Course is in fairly good shape. Challenging par 3s and challenging pin placements. I wish they had coolers for the carts but not a deal breaker. Allison in the pro shop is awesome and Aiden (starter) is rock solid.
One area for improvement is to have a course ranger to occasionally ride around looking for gaps. We were waiting on every hole and soon discovered that 2 groups ahead there was no one in front of them for 1.5 holes. I finally mentioned something to them when we were teeing off and they were on another green. They were cool about it as I just helped them understand that we were backed up behind them (some groups don’t understand pace and how you should strive to keep up with the group in front and ensure those behind you are not waiting because of you). I think some groups just have to be told as they were likely hitting multiple tee shots.
Also - as a Toka cardholder, I wish we did not have to adhere to a 3 day advance booking window as most of the preferred tee times are gone by then. This forces us to book public rates for a decent tee time on the weekends.
Good course to work on skills
Fair to good condition fairways, tee boxes are a little hard, greens have that invasive poa grass so makes them a little rougher. Would like to see more water stations especially now that it’s warming up! Pace of play was average. This is a traditional layout course-fairways are side by side. It’s a good course especially with snowbirds leaving you can get a decent tee time and rates are coming down.
Need a Ranger on the course
Slow pace of play , Had 10:44 t-time, did not t off til 11:09.
Round finished at 3:50.
Long day, Waited on every hole, no ranger on the course to move the slow groups to pick up pace of play, and many new to golf golfers who have no idea what they are doing.on a golf course.
Good
Nice little place to place if you are down by Mesa gateway. I didn’t like that fact that in order to get an ice chest, there was a 2 drink minimum. What’s up with that? So Dont get one? Just wanted to keep my water bottles and towel cool.
Great value
Get what you pay for and then some. Very slow play…
Worth the money
This course is slightly above average in layout and conditioning. The staff is very friendly and pace of play was fine. Golf has become so expensive in the Phoenix area during the winter and it's hard to find reasonable rates. If you can play this course for $65 or less, it's well worth it.
Tough Par 3s
Lots of interesting holes. It was well worth the trip to play golf this far out.
Greens: has some tough spots (damage and disease). Rolled true and we’re consistent.
Fairways: freshly cut and well taken care of.
Rough: plenty of grass and not too long.
Cart girl did a good job making the rounds. We saw her at least 4 times
Kitchen was limited. Guess the chef is off on Tuesday. Had an 11 tee time and could only get snacks .
Would recommend this course it was fun.
Great opportunity
Older course is in great shape. We arrived early for our tee time and we’re sent out almost immediately. No one in front for several holes and we out paced our followers quickly. Staff was friendly and helpful since there were a few changes since we were there last. Fairways you wish you could take off your shoes and walk on. Exceptional deal!
good course
would recommend. flat, very close to gateway air port. noise is not bad. restaurant not used. bathrooms clean and no porta-potties.
