Rating 71.8

Cave Creek Golf Course is Phoenix's most popular municipal course, seeing about 100,000 rounds yearly. In 1983, Cave Creek began as a landfill reclamation project. It's a sort of pioneer in environmental design, proving similar spots can find environmentally friendly uses. It's open dawn to dusk, year-round.

Eighteen holes of par-72 golf take golfers over 6,732 yards on the Cave Creek Golf Course, kicking off on the par-4 first hole, which measures 363 yards from the blue tees, before things get long on the second hole, which measures 510 yards from the blue tees. That's just one of four long holes, with the sixth hole measuring 532 yards from the blue tees, the 11th coming in at 521 yards from the blue tees, and the sixth having a distance of 518 yards from the blue tees. The round concludes after a suggested playing time of four hours and 10 minutes on the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 388 yards from the blue tees.

The city of Phoenix has contracted with several hotel chains to offer stay-and-play packages for golfers at the Cave Creek Golf Course and other municipal tracks.

Bad shape, seek other options

This course is rough, even by Arizona summer standards. There are far better options in the area. Played it on a hot deal, but would have been very upset had I paid full price. Layout is nothing to write home about, greens had been recently punched (with no advance notice) and golf cart sounded like it was about to explode. The only thing that saved the day was the positivity of the staff. Disappointing compared to literally every other phoenix city course.

They just aerated the course so the greens were playing rough and slow, but no big issue there. Lost some balls and had a great time. Had an amazing breakfast burrito at the turn. I can’t wait to get back out and play another round.

What happened to this place?

I have been playing this course for years. A few years ago it got some improvements, parking lot, clean up, some other random cosmetic things. Yes, most of us know it's built on a former landfill. That brings challenges. I get it. What I don't get is why so many things are being ignored. Is it lack of funds? Bad management? I'm not sure, but what I do know is myself and most people I talk to would rather play Aguila or onother value course over playing Cave Creek any day of the week and twice on Sunday. (I know, old quote) it's not my intention to come across negative, it's just my honest opinion, and it's shared by others. This place has potential to be a gem for the city of Phoenix if the right people stepped up to the challenge.

skip this place

Haven't played here in about 4 years and I will not be back...Needs a facelift badly, The fairways were a good mix of dirt, weeds, and grass. The best part of the course is the greens-they were pretty good. Lots of trash strewn about adjacent to the holes and in the ponds....It is worth about $20 per round if u really need to play but otherwise skip it and go somewhere else.....I have played other city courses and this one is in the worst shape of them all......some money needs to be put into it for a refresh....the cart paths are a combination of dirt and potholes....

Fun Course

Fun city course, course conditions were average but it’s the time of year where that can vary. The layout was cool, greens are sloped and challenging. For the price you can’t beat it!

In very rough shape

The greens are pretty good but the rest of the course is in very rough shape. Lots of bare spots even in fairways.

The cart paths are in such bad shape that they’re dangerous. Phoenix should be ashamed for letting the course get in such bad condition and for charging outrageous prices!

Very poor condition

The greens are in pretty good condition but the rest of the course leaves a lot to be desired. Fairways and collar areas have very little grass so your 2nd shot is coming off dirt and pitch/chip shots are coming off hardpan. Sad, because it’s a good course but the condition makes me not want to play it again.

Bad experience

Was waiting like 3min to tee off. After my scheduled tee time. They wanted to pair me up with a 3 ball and just kept letting other people through.

Ended up waiting on most of the tee boxes to tee off and gave up on it in the end.

Course layout had me almost hit while I was waiting on the tee box a few times.

All round pretty sub par course.

Greens and tee boxes were in good shape though.
