This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.

The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.

Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Hardest Course Ever

Great course but incredibly difficult. 2 feet off can cost you 3 strokes. Out of 18 holes probably had less than 20 shots off of flat ground, be ready for hills 12 foot slopes and Alcatraz style holes. With that being said a great course that will test your ability

An Absolute Must

Played here around noon on a weekday. Starter was extremely friendly and I was provided with a cooler (with ice and water) in my cart. GPS in the cart among the nicest I've ever seen, really came in handy.

It was hot (105) but bearable if you took some ice and rags and stayed hydrated... try to find shade in between holes. Walking in the summer would be suicidal.

Pace was wonderful, felt like I had the whole course to myself.

The Course

Not for beginners or higher handicaps- this course will crush you. Beyond challenging, every shot makes you think, and even the slightest mistakes are nearly always punished. Massive moguls and bunkers if you miss the fairway. Generally, a good strategy to miss long opposed to short, if you must miss. Bogeys here are respectable, pars are achievements, birdies are accomplishments. Greens are firm, fast, and in impeccable condition for the summer. My favorite hole was Double Trouble, number 6, water on left and right, accuracy here is a must.

Would I play here again? Absolutely! Walked away with an 88, was stoked on it. Would be cool to play in the on-season, but as you can imagine, much more expensive

Day in the Desert

Played both the Norman & Stadium Courses today both are very nice & were on my bucket list of places to play, the Stadium Course is great from 15 on into 18 with the Island Green on 17, the Rolling Hills & 100+ pot bunkers are visually enticing but tend to be a bit overkill, it was warm 100+ playing the Stadium Course with my buddy so we finished 40 minutes ahead of their target time. Bermuda Greens were very firm. We enjoyed it very much, the Clubhouse is a must see lots of Golf History on display, I would play here again & want to check out the others on the property soon.

Spectacular Vistas.

Such a beautiful course to play. Tough to keep the course pristine in the summer, but was very close to pristine today.

Wide range of “fair” Tee Boxes. Was the perfect setup.

Staff we were in contact with was helpful and courteous. Treated first class. .

PGA West Stadium Course

A beautiful course. Well laid out. Straight off the tees is at premium unless you like sand or water. A tough course, can't imagine how tough it is when set up for the pros. Would definitely play here again.

Great Course! Super Tough Track...

What can you say.... I mean it’s the PGA West Stadium course! Amazing design (as normal) for Pete Dye and tricky as ever. One of the most toughest tracks I have played, hard to find an even lie but that to be said about 99% of Pete’s courses.

Greens were in great condition and true to play. Fairways were nice the rough was thick enough but not to thick.... DEEEEP BUNKERS!!! DEEP!

Would highly recommend to anyone! Good reminder.

Always fun to play a track the pros play on and see where you truly measure up. Welp back to the range for me.

Stadium

Rode the Blues (6739/73.1/140) mid day in 3H, 15M. on a GN Hot Deal. Matched up with Brandon, nice guy and really good player. The weather was uncomfortable. Muggy, calm and 109. Bermuda tees were mostly flat and more thin than lush with good coverage. Bermuda fairways had many brownish areas but were still nice to play from. Bermuda rough was thick even though mowed down low. Usually okay to play out of, not very penal. Plentiful sand traps were very well maintained with good quality sand. Bermuda greens putted medium speed and were firm and somewhat bumpy. Today was about as dead as I have ever seen PGA West. There were probably less than 40 cars total for both the Nicklaus Tournament and Stadium courses. Counting employees, that is not many players for 2 courses of this caliber on a holiday. We had several holes in front and behind us with no one most of the round. @ Stadium you face more than usual amounts of water plus huge, deep sand traps as tough obstacles. Throw in the typical Pete Dye moguls and you have a layout that is among the toughest I play. Always enjoy this layout. Excellent customer service as usual here. Complementary bottled water was a +. Cart gal around several times. Numerous water stations on the course. Good GPS on the carts. Nice all grass range that was not very busy. Highly recommended.

Beat Down!

I've played here several times, Today the track wasn't in the best of condition. Brought a buddy who never played here. The course starts with pretty mild holes until # 6 after that if your not hitting proper golf shots prepare for torture. You don't have to hit great or good shots, Just not poor ones thats when Pete the punisher e·vis·cer·ates your round!! Just ask my friend a 10 hdcp shot Gretzky lol. Rode the blues 6700+ yds. I love this course not so much for the challenge but to watch decent players get a 25 hdcp beat down!!

Conditions are terrible

First time out at TPC Stadium. What a disappointment. The fairways were terrible and that wasn’t even the worst of it. Sand was rock hard/dirt. The greens...they should warn you when booking that the greens are in terrible shape. The grass was so long I think the fairways rolled better. Just so disappointed after hearing such good things.

PGA West Rating

Such a great course that is challenging and fun at any angle. I would say couple things which shocked me is they did not have a cooler on the cart - there was not cart person or bag person when I pulled up to drop off clubs and even when I completed my round. Other than that when I paid for my green fees the employee there was amazing.

Totally worth the drive and $$!

Incredible layout, course was in great shape despite 110+ temps for weeks. Pace of play was great, even had an assist from a very friendly and very active Marshall (which has been rare lately) that allowed us to find a soft spot on the back nine so that we would finish our round before sundown. Excellent course, great service, outstanding overall!

You played that morning on a 110+ degree day. Did you share your thoughts with Staff or just the internet?

Novice golfers take note:

Due to the COVID 19,

I write this review not having picked up a club, golf stretching or even played golf in 7 months. This course is a quality course. Layout & Hole names like Double trouble fit. Ball position is key here on every hole. Lot’s of water, Waste area & bunkers. (Trouble)

If your a 15 index, lay up short of trouble & wedge into the green. Visit the web site & take notes; still doesn’t do this course justice. I’ll play this course & highly recommend you put this course on ur schedule. Course not in tip top shape & 115 degrees. Hmmm...

Poor Conditions

Expectations were high on PGA West. I’ve been golfing for 30 years and would say this is the most disappointed I’ve ever been. Overall, course conditions was as poor as I’ve eve seen on a golf course. It’s unbelievable that this is a stop on the tour.
