The Stadium Course at PGA WEST
About
This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.
The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.
Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Bucket list course
The course was a great course to play But the pace of play was very slow. The greens were in terrible condition as were getting ready for the PGA tournament in couple of weeks. Wish we had been told the greens were in that condition as we wouldn’t of spent that kind of money to play.
Nice time
The course was a great course to play the layout was excellent they are going to play a PGA tournament in a couple weeks the only thing that I did not like was the pace of play it was a little slow.
Always a treat!
Very nice afternoon round. Pace of play was good. Tough yet playable course and always worth the money. Would definitely come back
Great overall experien
This is one of Pete Dye’s best designs and most challenging. Adhere to instructions and tips from built in GPS on carts and your day should be unscathing. Failure to sacrifice distance for accuracy on some holes may prove costly. A great test for precision golf and remember, Do Not Go Left on the 16th.
Tough, fair
Played for $65 through GolfNow. Pace was excellent, playing in 4 hours. Conditions were very good, the greens were fast and the fairways in great shape. Ask the starter which tees to play to fully enjoy this beauty. I’m a 9 hdcp and played the blue/white combo which was perfect for my game.
Unforgettable experience and test of golf
Played the Stadium course yesterday. First time playing at La Quinta or the Stadium Course.
The Stadium course is notoriously difficult, and rightfully so. I was lucky to draw a husband and wife duo who were a 3 and 9 handicap respectively, that had played there multiple times.

The course starts off mildly with some tight, narrow holes that require you to hit the fairway or accept a bogey. You must then hit the green or accept a bogey. If you hit the wrong part of the green you must accept a bogey. It's more fun than it sounds.
This is the tone for the entire course. Pete Dye gives you an assignment, you just follow his directions to complete the assignment. You have options on most holes but there's always one shot that requires you do something exactly right or pay a price.
The par 3's and 5's stand out in particular, and there famous closing stretch lives up to the hype.
I can easily recommend any single digit play this course at least once. Higher handicaps should go into it with the right expectations to have a memorable day. Regardless of score, simply playing some of the holes exactly right will be immensely rewarding and provide good memories and stories after the round.
Amazing Golfing Experience .
This was our first time golfing at PGA West Stadium Course.
Pete Dye’s layout is quite challenging and the wonderful topography of elevation changes are enjoyable.
From the bag boys to Proshop and starters were friendly and inviting.
First Class Experience
A spectacular complex with friendly staff and great amenities. Fortunately played this course on a day with no wind. Very challenging and definitely not for high handicap golfers. Most important is to play the appropriate tee; this is not a course to let your ego get the best of you. Lots of fun and would definitely play again.
Stadium
Rode the Blues (6739/73.1/140) twilight in slightly less than 4.5H... for 15 holes? Finally found a way to shoot in the 70's from the Blues @ Stadium, have it get too dark to play after 15 holes. CPO and a slow group in front on a packed course made for a snails POP. Matched up with Dwayne, Mike and A.J., very nice group to play with. The weather was sunny, calm and around 95.
The over seeded tees were mostly flat and lush.
The over seeded fairways were lush and excellent to play from.
The Bermuda primary rough was mostly dormant. Still thick even though mowed down low. It was usually nice to play out of.
The plentiful sand traps were very well maintained with good quality sand.
The over seeded greens putted medium slow speed and were firm and somewhat bumpy coming out of over seeding. Definitely weeks behind the Nicklaus greens.
This was one of the toughest courses in the U.S. when it opened in the 1980's. More than usual amounts of water plus huge, deep sand traps are tough obstacles. Throw in the typical Pete Dye moguls and you have a layout that can beat up even PGA Tour players. #6 was playing 240 to a back pin with at least a 200 yard carry over water today from the blues. Just for giggles, one of my playing partners scoped the Blacks. 267 over water is a LONG par 3. However, always enjoy this layout,
Excellent customer service as usual here. Cart gal around 4-5 times. Numerous water stations on the course. Good GPS on the carts. Nice all grass range that was very busy. Definitely recommended.
Enjoyed the round
Course was in good shape, greens were faster than other courses I played during the week. Greens ran true. Everything was in great shape. Was cart path only, so had to do a fair bit of walking.
Will definitely come back
My favorite course in the valley
I love this place. Course was just out of overseeing, so fairways and greens were longer than normal, but shot values were still the same. Just a challenging course, with lots of interesting holes. Beware of the water.
Stadium
Rode the Blues (6739/73.1/140) twilight in slightly less than 3H using Forelinx. The weather was overcast, breezy and around 90.
Bad shots can be really penalized on this Pete Dye layout. Miss the fairway or green and your recovery shot will almost assuredly be a side hill lie, often an extreme side hill lie. Even relatively good shots barely offline can quickly result in a double or worse. More than usual water and avoiding the sand here is a higher priority than almost any other course I have played.
The Bermuda tees were mostly flat with adequate coverage. Well maintained, only some par 3's needed divot attention.
The Bermuda fairways were mostly lush with most divots already repaired.
The Bermuda rough was lush and still thick even though mowed down low. Actually, nice to play out of at this level.
The plentiful sand traps were very well maintained with good quality sand. Many of the traps here the average golfer needs to steer clear of to avoid big numbers.
The Bermuda greens putted medium speed and were firm and somewhat bumpy. typical for late summer before over seeding. nice.
The customer service is always excellent here. Drink cart around once then closes early during twilight. Numerous water stations on the course. Good GPS on the carts. Nice all grass range that closed at 1pm today. Very challenging layout featuring moguls and many large bunkers that make for challenging sight lines that is in decent late summer condition. Definitely recommended.
WORST CONDITIONS EVER
This course should not even be open for play until they can sort out their play-ability issues. The fairways are choppy with multiple bare spots throughout every fairway, greens are not much better. The entire course is basically Ground Under Repair right now. Wait for them to fix before you book. I would not play it for free.
Poor conditions
I knew the course was in rough shape but it was worse than I expected. Very choppy fairways and greens.
Horrible condition
Golf course was in horrible shape. Tees, greens and fairways were all in very bad condition. I felt like I was playing in a cow pasture. Unbelievable for PGA stadium course not even worth 10 dollars. Very disappointed
