The Stadium Course at PGA WEST
About
This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.
The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.
Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Muni courses are better
This is a destination course and the expectations are high. To say that every cheap, run-down muni course I’ve ever played was a more enjoyable experience would not be an understatement. We booked the tee time three weeks ago. When we checked in, we were given a $10 discount and told the course conditions were a bit “bumpy.” Um, that was the understatement of the century. There was more sand and mud in the fairways than grass and about half of the greens had large sections that were under repair. I had 3-4 birdie putts with a line that went through mud and sand. Listen, sometimes even the best courses have issues with their terrain...I get that. But to not reach out to people ahead of time and warn them of the conditions (thereby giving them a chance to make alternate arrangements)? Absolutely unacceptable for a course of this significance. We also did not see a marshall the entire time, and the water in the on-course coolers was hot (not ideal for 110 degree temps). If you’re planning on trying to play here in summer of 2019, HIGHLY recommend you look at some of the other great courses in the area. This place is a disaster right now.
Great course. Terrible condition!
Played this course with high expectations. Pete Dye design is brutally hard. Fairways and greens are in terrible condition. Pace of play very slow giving way too much time to see all the trouble on the course. Wait to play when condition is better.
Horrible greens
Not sure it should be open until they get them repaired.
Pretty much had course to ourselves. Fairways in excellent condition, staff were all very frriendly. Greens need some work.
I would recommend this course to only thos who have low handicaps only. Defibitely a championship course with very deep bunkers and hilly/narrow fairways. Mid to high handicappers will struggle here.
I admit I Am Biased
So my parents live on this course so I am a bit biased, but this is my favorite of the PGA West courses. I usually play either the back tees or one up from the back tees and I swear to God I swear like I have lost a fistfight every time I walk off the course. You have to hit every shot in the bag out here!
Only bad thing is sometimes you can get the tourist players out here who really don't belong playing such a tough course, but there are usually marshals cruising around all day.
If youre a single digit handicap planning a trip with the boys, this is a must play!
A brutal test of golf
The Stadium course gets the respect of all golfers including professionals. When this course was built, persimmon woods and blade irons were the norm. No 460 drivers to easily hit your target. The Stadium today strikes fear and respect into players with modern equipment so imagine what it was like in the 1980s.
Flat lies are seldom. Miss your alley was and you will likely be in golf purgatory until you dig out back into play. The moons surface is between tee and green so club choice and a solid swing is paramount to get you around this track with some sanity remaining. It's a beautiful layout and a PGA West trophy. A must play
Stupid difficult
Just not good to people that can no hit it straight. This course is penalties so severe you are on the outside looking in
Every hole is different
Every hole is different and a challenge. You need to decided on a plan for each hole and then execute your plan. Any errant shots will be penalized, either by find water, or by making the next shot much harder. Just a really fun place to play. The finishing hole, 15-18 are fairly unique. The deep bunker left of 16 green is interesting, if your not in it. The sand most around 12 can be a challenge to negotiate too.
Worth experiencing, just don’t expect to have a great score.
Got to play at least once in your life
This is a unique course. On most holes you need to hit the ball very exactly lots of water, sand and elevation changes. Hole 5, called double trouble, gives you two chances to hit it in the water, one on the left and the other on the right. All the par 3s are interesting, with the iconic 17th, not nearly as hard as the 6th. The bunker left of the 16th should be experienced, as it’s unique, but so is the bunker on 12, which is a moat of sand around the green. Just unique and fun, but expect to make some bad scores on at least a few holes.
Beautiful but tough course
This course is fantastic. However, with many undulating fairways and greens it is very tough. Great track.
Ever challenging Stadium Course
Great day of golf with an enjoyable pairing with other guests. Conditions were ideal with a slight breeze. Looking forward to another chance to play the Stadium course.
Great course, great rate
Very pleasant golfing day with buddies. Everything was top notch from playing conditions, to friendly staff, and everything in between. golf rate was phenominal
Not as tough but still...
Since Pete Dye came out to redesign the course it has been tamed quite a bit. It used to be a monster with every fairway lined with waist high bushes on all of the mounds (and 6.5 hour rounds). With the redesign it is still a beast but you can make some loose shots and still recover now. The fairways were pristine, tees in great shape, and greens a bit on the slower side than normal but still running very smooth. Come on out, you won't regret it. I was a bit disappointed on the first tee when I found out that I paid $175 through GolfNow and the 3some I was with paid $125. Not sure how they got that rate but you should know that it's out there if you can find it.
Tough but great shape.
First time playing this course. Not many flat lies. Greens are gorgeous.
Fantastic!
Beautiful course, great condition. unbeatable scenic vistas. Loved every minute of it. Very playable if you choose appropriate tee blocks and you're not hitting it all over the yard. Friendly staff. Eat and drink at Ernie's patio afterward to prolong a great day
Playing like the Pros
It was a great course to get a sense of what the Pros encounter even though not playing from the ‘tips’.
Nice idea to clearly make the entry and exits to the fairways. Areas of the course were quite dry and browned out.
Given this was first time playing the course we found it difficult to navigate around the many ,many bunkers. The GPS was not very helpful in many cases in order to be able to see bunkers behind rolls and hills. Greens were purported to be running at 11 in many instances they were much slower but rolling consistently.
Overall it was a tough test of golf, given it was our first time out for the season, it was probably not the best choice to start on. I would definitely play the course again.
This was our last round before leaving Palm Springs heading back to Alberta. Good customer service from. When you are met to getting on the course. Course in great shape. Challenging and narrow fairways. You had to think about your next shot.
When walking across the bridge on the 17th hole, Alcatraz, interesting to note that many PGA golfers had walked the same bridge.
