This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.

The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.

Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Overall, still a very good experience. Having said that, the golf course is not what it was 15 years ago. They’ve taken down so many trees! Also, for what they’re charging the greens should be perfect. They were running no more than seven and were bumpy and shaggy. They posted 9.5 at the starters shack. lol! Maybe downhill at 7:30 in the morning.

Great day in the desert

Always love playing this course. Was able to get a last-minute deal for $110. At that price it’s an absolute steal! Would never pay $300 rack rate for this though.

Course is as expected fairly soon after overseed. greens are rolling approximately eight and are very bumpy. Fairways are super lush and in beautiful condition.

Staff was friendly. All of the range balls are brand new food and the restaurant was good.!

Beautiful course, greens were great! Poor pace of play, I’d say a 6 hour round so book before noon ! We DID NOT FINISH at the 1:30 tee time !

This review will be a bit jaded because I played with James Hahn during the American Express Pro-Am. What an experience. Even playing as a shamble, my fivesome found the course fearsome. The mounds lining the fairways set up awkward lies to greens fortified by bunkers and steep falloffs. Everybody but one teammate rinsed their tee shots in the water on 'Alcatraz', the island par 3. The pros make this place look too easy. It's intimidating to play for everyone else.

Play where the Pros play

We were a twosome so hit from the tips! Shot about +10 over my usual but who cares when you’re playing where the pros do. Entire experience was first class. I’ll be back (not sure my wife will, it’s big!!!)

Not my favorite track!

Forgot how much I dislike this layout!

Understandable how the PGA tour guys cut it from the rotation back in the day!

The mounding/moguls are unnecessary and makes shots harder.

On the back wall of the Pro shop counter is a quote from I think Tom Watson (?) that says something like "golfers on this course will have to hit some shots they have never hit before"

Pace of play was terrible.. we quit after hole 15.
