Maderas Golf Club is one of San Diego's most popular courses. Although it is less than an hour from Torrey Pines, it has a stunning landscape and challenging design that rivals that of the famed seaside course. Maderas may not have the ocean views, but its beautiful landscape provides just as much scenery. Nestled inland amongst rolling hills, the golf course weaves through rocky cliffs and outcroppings. There are mature trees throughout as well as a meandering creek and over forty acres of native wildflowers. There are three sparkling lakes and five waterfalls that come into play on the course. The demanding layout features difficult greens that are large and lightning fast. Several tricky uphill and downhill lies can be found throughout Maderas Golf Club thanks to the hilly terrain.

Great championship course, no question. Private club atmosphere. Choose the appropriate tee box (white, if index >10 for men), play errant shots as lateral hazards, get a couple beers from the enthusiast cart woman, and get on with it. Wonderful place that is geared for solid players who play at least twice a week.

It's a Must-Play course in the San Diego Area

While visiting San Diego recently on a 6-day golfing trip, we all agreed... this course was the golf highlight of our entire 6 days!

Upon arrival, Maderas was quiet and calm. Staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. It's in a neighborhood, and has the feel of a high-end yet low-key country club.

Practice areas were great. We played on a weekday, late morning, and although the course was full, we were neither rushed nor waited on any hole. The course was in exceptional condition. Holes were interesting, somewhat challenging. Greens were fantastic.

Any golf trip to the San Diego area must include a round at Maderas. We'd choose Maderas over our rounds at Torrey Pines or Monarch Beach... any time.

Great Course & Challenging

Third course I played during my trip (Salt Creek and Torrey Pines) and found this course to be my favorite. I know it will be blasphemy to put this course higher than Torrey Pines but I did play the North course, and I look for more than a pretty view when I play and critique a course. I enjoyed the layout and found it quite challenging. In fact it was a bit too challenging for me on this particular day. You need to be able to drive the ball straight otherwise it will be quite punitive. But that is not unique to this type of layout. The course was in good shape all the way around, nice elevation change, few water holes, etc. I would recommend it to anyone.

Outstanding Course

Played today. Course was in immaculate condition. Greens were fast and difficult, but rolled true. Overall the course was in excellent condition tee to green. Major kudos to the management team that seemed to include niceness everywhere. Got to love positive attitudes. Had lunch after the round and had one of the best burgers ever. I can't wait to return. First class experience.

Fun track but a five hour round sucks

Fun course but five hour rounds ruin a lot of nice courses in my opinion. Tee'd off at 1 PM and barely finished due to almost a three hour back nine. It's amazing to me that golfers can fall three and four holes behind and don't feel like they are doing anything wrong.....

I keep coming back to this amazing course. If you can afford the $105 non-peak Golf Now tee time rate, it's a must play. The conditions are typically very good and yesterday the conditions were great. In addition, the weather was ideal, so I could not ask for more.

Fairway Conditions Are Excellent

The management of this course is so good. The fairways were in amazing shape, especially considering the low precipitation in the San Diego region. Two greens on the front side were a little thin in some areas. Other than that, the putts rolled true. The sunset late in the day made the afternoon round more spectacular.

Maderas

Worth the trip to this course. Challenging for all players. A few blind shots but GPS on the cart helps navigate the course. Greens in great shape. A bit pricey but fun to play. Very enjoyable.

A MUST PLAY

DEFINITELY A MUST PLAY!

I was able to score a great deal on GOLFNOW for $85 at 1:00PM which included cart and unlimited use of their practice facilities (including range balls). Staff were very very friendly and extremely helpful. I showed up one and a half early and was able to enjoy everything they offered.

Course was in perfect shape but I have to warn you that it's a very challenging course. You would have to deal with a lot of blind tee/green shots along with elevation changes, however the cart comes with GPS so it's manageable even for 1st timers. Greens are deceptively fast, you really have to put into consideration on reading grains; you will not have a flat lie on your fairway shots which adds another layer of challenge.

I also played Torrey Pines South that week and I would honestly say that I would go back to Maderas before I go back to Torrey Pines because of cost - Torrey cost me more than $250 for the round with cart (however Torrey is still a must play - one of those course that should be on everyone's bucket list)

Highly Recommend Maderas to everyone.

Maderas

Played the Blues (73.3/136/6670) with Parker, his dad Jim & Mike in bright, breezy conditions in the 70's. The POP was around 4.5H. This would be a very challenging course to walk since it's hilly with several tees a good distance from the last green. Many holes have red penalty areas down one or both sides, but I usually find this course very manageable off the tee. Fairly wide landing areas on most holes. The customer service was excellent from all encountered. Starts with an attendant collecting your clubs when you arrive, to complimentary range balls and finishes with attendants who clean you clubs and provide cool, wet towels for you to wash off with at the conclusion of your round. They also have an informative starter and Marshall who actually is courteously out looking to enforce POP guidelines. The Bermuda tees were very good. Only a few par 3's needed divot attention. The Bermuda fairways were mostly lush. I almost always had good lies in the fairway. The Bermuda rough had good coverage and was mostly lush. Not too penal, it was deep enough to get your attention but your could always find your ball in the primary rough. The traps here are about as good as you can get on any public course. Good quality sand, enough said! The greens putted medium fast, were usually firm and relatively smooth for the most part. The only negative was the amount of unfixed ball marks, which is a golfer issue. Excellent practice facility that is inclusive with the daily fee. Drink cart out and making the rounds multiple times. The only negative here is that the carts do not have GPS, which is really odd for a high end course? The amenities, layout, design, difficulty and conditions are all well above average. Absolutely recommended.

First time

We played last Friday for the first time. The course is in great condition. I thought the course was tough with many forced carries. The setting is beautiful. I would recommend playing. The $105 we paid to play in the afternoon seems like a fair price. No GPS in carts.

Did Not Deliver

I was excited to play this Johnny Miller design, but conditions did not live up to expectations. Fairways were recently aerated, but they played loose, as if the grass was laid on top of the ground. Dry and high, made most tee balls run off into worse conditions in the rough. Be forewarned, there is not a flat lie anywhere on this course, made for an extremely taxing day. I expected better conditions for the money.

Hidden Gem

I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this golf facility. From the course to the club and the 19th hole, hospitality was top notch. Course was laid out very well and was somewhat challenging at time. I will definitely play this course again.
