Maderas Golf Club
About
Maderas Golf Club is one of San Diego's most popular courses. Although it is less than an hour from Torrey Pines, it has a stunning landscape and challenging design that rivals that of the famed seaside course. Maderas may not have the ocean views, but its beautiful landscape provides just as much scenery. Nestled inland amongst rolling hills, the golf course weaves through rocky cliffs and outcroppings. There are mature trees throughout as well as a meandering creek and over forty acres of native wildflowers. There are three sparkling lakes and five waterfalls that come into play on the course. The demanding layout features difficult greens that are large and lightning fast. Several tricky uphill and downhill lies can be found throughout Maderas Golf Club thanks to the hilly terrain.

Lush & Challenging
We'd heard only good things about this course, but it was better than that. Shot placement was key to scoring well, but the course was very forgiving. Conditions were superb. Staff were very informative and even placed us with local players that helped immensely with course knowledge
Maderas Magic
From the staff friendliness to the course conditions, this place is unmatched in San Diego. And when you find a deal on GolfNow for under $100, it becomes a Disneyland rival for most magical place on Earth.
Maderas Golf Club
This was my first time playing this course. It looked like it could be a little too challenging online but I found it to be challenging but very fair. What you see is what you get. Greens and fairways were in excellent condition for the time of year. Some of the tees were a little rough which may be due to the SoCal drought. I would definitely play here again and I am very particular about where I play.
Maderas Golf
Best bang for the buck with golf now . Beautiful landscaping , very challenging . Very scenic even a bad is enjoyable
Maderas
Played the Blues (73.6/137/6670) using Underpar. Played with nodoubles22 & 140ver as a 3some. Teeing off @ 1pm, the POP was around 4H, 45M. The weather was in the 70's, sunny and breezy.
This would be a very challenging course to walk since it's hilly with several tees a good distance from the last green. Many holes have red penalty areas down one or both sides, but I find this course very manageable off the tee. Fairly wide landing areas on most holes.
The Bermuda tees were very good, mowed close. Only a few par 3's needed divot attention.
The Bermuda fairways played very well. I almost always had good lies in the fairway.
The Bermuda rough had good coverage and was not too penal. I was able to hit longer clubs w/o issue out of the rough.
The traps here have good quality sand & are nicely maintained.
The green complexes @ Maderas are huge, undulating and many have crowns. You could easily have a 100+ foot putt on multiple greens on this course. The greens were not totally back from aeration but are getting close. Definitely below average today from what I have come to expect on this course. They putted medium speed, were firm and somewhat bumpy the later we got in the day.
Excellent practice facility that is inclusive with the green fee. The customer service was excellent from all encountered. Starts with an attendant collecting your clubs when you arrive, to complimentary range balls and finishes with attendants who clean you clubs and provide cool, wet towels for you to wash off with at the conclusion of your round. They also have an informative starter and Marshall who actually looks to enforce POP guidelines. Drink cart out and making the rounds multiple times.
Had a cheeseburger and Arnold Palmer for lunch that were priced about twice what they were worth. The only other negative here is that the carts here do not have GPS, which is really odd for a high end course? Definitely would be beneficial here, with all the elevation changes it is challenging to gauge distances correctly. The layout, design, difficulty and the conditions were all well above average. There is a reason Maderas is listed among the top 100 daily fee courses in the country, Absolutely recommended.

Played the Blues (73.6/137/6670) using Underpar. Played my GK match with nodoubles22 in a 3some that included 140ver. POP was around 4 1/2 hours. The weather was in the 70's, sunny and calm.
The tees were very good overall, just a few par 3's needed divot attention.
The Bermuda fairways were very good and played nice.
The Bermuda rough had good coverage and was mowed fairly close, not too penal.
The traps were nicely maintained with good quality sand.
The greens were subpar for this course. Not totally back from aeration but are getting close. They putted medium speed, were firm and not nearly as smooth as I am accustomed to here. The green complexes @ Maderas are huge, undulating and many have crowns. You could easily have a 100+ foot putt on multiple greens on this course.

Definitely recommended, one of my favorite courses in Southern California.
A great golf course
Madeiras was a great course to play. Rarely do I have a chance to play a course sculpted in the mountains. There are some of the most scenic views I have ever witnessed. The course is very scorable with good shots. Course management is a must. I was lucky to play with some local gentlemen with local knowledge and had a very good time. Too bad the greens were a little fury as they had been punched in the last few weeks. Overall, a great place to spend a day and admire nature!
Not impressed like other reviewers
With all the fantastic praise this course receives I was expecting something at least as good as Indian Wells. It was not close. The greens were punched and the fairways were just ok. I've been wanting to play here for a long time so I've checked it off but I have no desire to play here again. My round took just under 4:30 minutes which is the Troon standard so I can't complain about that but we waited over 10 minutes on the tee box for most holes. The pace of play was not good for fast players. My score was decent but could have been so much better with good greens. One and done for me..
An absolute must play in the San Diego area.
After reading about Maderas in preparation for my trip to the San Diego area, I was expecting a very nice course. I was not disappointed. In fact, I left very impressed, even though the course was not in its absolute best condition (rough was a bit dry due to drought). Two friends and I ended up playing the course twice as a threesome, and each time we played without waiting. The course layout is challenging, especially to first timers, but fair if you know what you are doing. We did the obligatory round at Torrey Pines, but we all agreed that this was our favorite.
Great track!!!
Found a deal on golfnow for $110 and couldnt pass it up. The staff is awesome. Friendly and willing to go the extra mile to assist in any way possible. Course condition was excellent. Fairways were great, greens rolled true and bunkers were consistent. Challenging yet fun. Marshalls kept the pace of play and we finished in less than 4 hours on a saturday mid morning. Had a great time and will definitely be back to play and will say that it is one of the must plays in san diego!!!!
Maderas - Poway, Calif
Booked Maderas on our San Diego trip based on on-line reviews and were blown away by how much we liked this course. It's away from the coast so don't expect seaside (cliffs overlooking the Pacific) vistas. It is tucked into low mountains and ravines with an almost desert feel to it. Great views from the higher points. A nice change of pace from coastal courses.
Expect a wonderful golf experience; beautiful course, great practice facilities, attentive staff. It is a fair test of golf but being paired with players with local knowledge makes a lot of difference. We were lucky and had great playing partners whose advice was very helpful.
It will definitely be on our list of play the next time we are in the San Diego area. A must play course.
Loved the course layout but...
I loved this challenging course! The staff were friendly and helpful. But, the pace of play was dreadful and I did not see any rangers dealing with the problem.
Maderas
Played the Blues (73.6/137/6670) using Forelinx. Matched up with Ayaji & Greg, both Forelinxers. POP was slightly over 4 hours. The weather was 80ish, breezy and sunny.
Hilly course with several tees a good distance from the last green, this would be a very challenging to walk. Many holes have red penalty areas down one or both sides, but I find this course very manageable off the tee. Fairly wide landing areas on most holes.
The tees were very good overall, just a few par 3's needed divot attention.
The fairways were very good and played nice.
The rough had good coverage and could be penal.
The traps were very nicely maintained with good quality sand.
The greens putted medium fast and were smooth and firm. VERY nice even though I had a sub par putting day. The green complexes here are large, undulating and many have tiers. You could easily have a 100+ foot putt on multiple greens on this course.
The customer service was excellent, especially Daniel, an Assistant Pro in the Pro Shop. Excellent practice facility that is inclusive with the green fee. Complimentary coffee on the practice range was a very nice touch. Drink cart out and making the rounds multiple times. About the only negative here is that the carts here do not have GPS, which is really odd for a facility like this? Definitely would be beneficial here, with all the elevation changes it is challenging to gauge distances correctly. The layout, design, difficulty and especially the conditions were all well above average. Absolutely recommended, one of my favorite courses.
Great course
Played this course with three other singles. No local knowledge but course was still very easy to play. Great layout and these pace was really good. Some spectacular views from tee boxes and the greens were running very true. Would definitely recommend this course to anyone.
Stay in the fairway
This is a challenging course. A lot of ravines, creek beds, hills, traps to make your game go south in a hurry. A couple of holes have blind landing areas with some hidden dangers, so if possible play with someone who knows the course.
Matt Ginella got this right! The
It might seem over the top to give all categories a 5 star rating but Maderas hit all the right spots and in our minds was worth the trip, and the money although a good Hot Deal from GN made this even more enjoyable.
Course was in great condition, played off the Blues which made it a challenge but still playable, my wife played off a mixture of whites and greens and probably wishes she'd stuck just to the forward tees but still enjoyed the experience.
Pro, Starter and all the other staff we met were very welcoming and the starter spent some time explaining the course, especially the large size of the greens and to club up if pins were at the back which did help a lot.
Pace of play was great and we were round as a 3 ball in 3 3/4 hours. Like all courses played for the first time you want another go to benefit from a bit of course knowledge and we've already booked another visit.
Maderas
Played the Blues (73.6/137/6670) using Forelinx as a single first out, playing at a leisurely pace of 4 hours. The weather was very overcast and calm, around 60.
I like the layout & design more with each visit. Overall, the conditions were not as nice as my last trip here, but still very good, just not excellent. Hilly course with several tees a good distance from the last green, this would be a very challenging to walk. You cannot get off the beaten path on this layout or your ball is gone and you are adding penalty strokes. However, most fairway landing areas are generous in size, not a super tight course.
The tees were winter thin and especially the par 3's needed divot attention.
The fairways were sprayed emerald green and played nice. However, a downside is that many patrons here do not actually use the sand provided and fill in their divots. Tons of unfixed divots in the fairways.
The rough had good coverage and could be penal.
The traps were immaculate and played well. Nice white fluffy sand, both aestically pleasing and great to play out of.
The greens are large, undulating and many have tiers. They putted medium fast, and were fair;y smooth and firm.
The layout, design, difficulty and especially the conditions were all well above average. Many very high end homes are high up on hills looking down on the course, the scenery and the views were both stimulating. The customer service was excellent from everyone encountered. Excellent practice facility and complimentary range balls are inclusive with the green fee. Drink cart out and making the rounds. Operated by Troon Golf, as are Aviara and the Indian Wells courses, collectively some of the better daily fee courses in So Cal IMO. About the only negative is that the carts here do not have GPS, which is really odd for a facility like this? Definitely needed here too, with all the elevation changes it is challenging to gauge distances correctly. Absolutely recommended, especially if you can get a deal.
Maderas
Played the Blues (6670/73.6/137) first out in 3H, 45M as a single. The starter let me out before my scheduled tee time and I stayed at least a hole ahead of the 2some behind me. Hit practice shots/putts and had fun! The weather was completely overcast and fairly still, 60ish.
The tees were fairly lush overall, just a few par 3's needed divot attention.
The Bermuda fairways were sprayed emerald green and played nice. Good winter coverage.
The rough had good coverage and could be penal.
The traps were very nice, immaculate and well maintained.
The greens putted medium fast, were smooth and firm. They are large, undulating and many have tiers. You could easily have a 100 foot+ putt on multiple greens on this course.
The layout, design, difficulty and especially the conditions were all well above average. The scenery of high end homes high up on hills looking down on the course and the views are both a plus. The customer service was excellent from everyone encountered. Excellent practice facility that is inclusive with the green fee. Drink cart out and making the rounds several times. About the only negative is that the carts here do not have GPS, which is really odd for a facility like this. Definitely would be useful here, with all the elevation changes it is challenging to gauge distances correctly.
This would be a very challenging to walk. Hilly with several tees a good distance from the last green. You cannot get off the beaten path on this layout or your ball is gone and you are adding penalty strokes. However, most fairway landing areas are generous in size, it's not a real tight course. I am really a fan of this course and layout! Absolutely recommended, especially if you can get a deal.
Really slow round not worth paying 250 for w 5 hour round
No one was at the snack bar on the turn couldn't get anything to eat on a busy Sunday.
5 hour round way to long for the price paid
Good course
Good course but the pace of play was really slow. They need to keep slower groups moving.
