Maderas Golf Club is one of San Diego's most popular courses. Although it is less than an hour from Torrey Pines, it has a stunning landscape and challenging design that rivals that of the famed seaside course. Maderas may not have the ocean views, but its beautiful landscape provides just as much scenery. Nestled inland amongst rolling hills, the golf course weaves through rocky cliffs and outcroppings. There are mature trees throughout as well as a meandering creek and over forty acres of native wildflowers. There are three sparkling lakes and five waterfalls that come into play on the course. The demanding layout features difficult greens that are large and lightning fast. Several tricky uphill and downhill lies can be found throughout Maderas Golf Club thanks to the hilly terrain.

Beautiful course conditions but Crazy Fast Greens

The starter warned us the greens were fast and slippery, but after watching the ball make a 90° turn on several greens I had to do a little test. Found a green on the back 9 where the hole was cut on a slope...set my ball down two feet from the hole and watched it slide off the green! Dang that’s slippery and maybe not fair!

So that’s a a bit of a nock against the greens keeper but heck it’s The Farmers this week and I’m sure he wanted to show how manly the green could be.

Course condition was great, much more lush than last time I played. Pace of play was excellent, there was no one in front of us, until we ran into a foursomes with rental clubs playing from the tips...struggled to stay focused watching them spray balls all over the place and then sequentially go to the green to putt out! Where’s a Marshall when you need ‘em. Thankfully we only had to watch that show for the last three holes.

Overall I shouldn’t complain, it’s a fun challenging course in a beautiful setting. If you can play it for under $90, which we did, it’s a helluva course!

Old School Golf Club

Great golf experience! Customer service was top notch. Course was in very good condition and the greens fast and difficult with extreme undulation. Very challenging course and conditions were exceptional. Will definitely be back to revenge myself.

PACE OF PLAY

We were 36 minutes behind pace. No Marshall at all. We had a guy walking and still waited on everybtee box.

Course is always a pleasure, tough so pick your tees wisely.

Now I Know

this course has always been on my radar; I visit San Diego at least twice a year ( have been doing so for last 20 yr.s); I read a review, suggesting strategy in lieu of banging away with driver would be better, but it took five holes & three lost balls for me to throttle back.

Having been an 18-month member @ Bridges, San Ramon, I wasn't surprised to see Johnny Miller as co-course architect, when I was toting my 50/43 - 93

I want another crack at this puzzle; anything 82 or under would make me happy

Pretty but tough

Beautiful but extremely hilly with too much up and down for an older or out of shape golfer. The greens we're in great shape but I'm possible to read.

Country club style golf

Wow. Unreal course

Very demanding off the tee

Bring your A game.

Gotta be accurate off the tee and accurate on all approaches, and it will be rewarded.

Greens were perfect and fast. Staff was friendly and helpful.

All around a great place to play.

Will be back for sure.

Best Course we played near La Jolla

Great course, friendly staff good value. Challenging greens and hilly terrain not length is the issue. Greens are really quick and undulating.

Great championship course, no question. Private club atmosphere. Choose the appropriate tee box (white, if index >10 for men), play errant shots as lateral hazards, get a couple beers from the enthusiast cart woman, and get on with it. Wonderful place that is geared for solid players who play at least twice a week.

It's a Must-Play course in the San Diego Area

While visiting San Diego recently on a 6-day golfing trip, we all agreed... this course was the golf highlight of our entire 6 days!

Upon arrival, Maderas was quiet and calm. Staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. It's in a neighborhood, and has the feel of a high-end yet low-key country club.

Practice areas were great. We played on a weekday, late morning, and although the course was full, we were neither rushed nor waited on any hole. The course was in exceptional condition. Holes were interesting, somewhat challenging. Greens were fantastic.

Any golf trip to the San Diego area must include a round at Maderas. We'd choose Maderas over our rounds at Torrey Pines or Monarch Beach... any time.

Great Course & Challenging

Third course I played during my trip (Salt Creek and Torrey Pines) and found this course to be my favorite. I know it will be blasphemy to put this course higher than Torrey Pines but I did play the North course, and I look for more than a pretty view when I play and critique a course. I enjoyed the layout and found it quite challenging. In fact it was a bit too challenging for me on this particular day. You need to be able to drive the ball straight otherwise it will be quite punitive. But that is not unique to this type of layout. The course was in good shape all the way around, nice elevation change, few water holes, etc. I would recommend it to anyone.

Outstanding Course

Played today. Course was in immaculate condition. Greens were fast and difficult, but rolled true. Overall the course was in excellent condition tee to green. Major kudos to the management team that seemed to include niceness everywhere. Got to love positive attitudes. Had lunch after the round and had one of the best burgers ever. I can't wait to return. First class experience.

Fun track but a five hour round sucks

Fun course but five hour rounds ruin a lot of nice courses in my opinion. Tee'd off at 1 PM and barely finished due to almost a three hour back nine. It's amazing to me that golfers can fall three and four holes behind and don't feel like they are doing anything wrong.....
