Maderas Golf Club
About
Maderas Golf Club is one of San Diego's most popular courses. Although it is less than an hour from Torrey Pines, it has a stunning landscape and challenging design that rivals that of the famed seaside course. Maderas may not have the ocean views, but its beautiful landscape provides just as much scenery. Nestled inland amongst rolling hills, the golf course weaves through rocky cliffs and outcroppings. There are mature trees throughout as well as a meandering creek and over forty acres of native wildflowers. There are three sparkling lakes and five waterfalls that come into play on the course. The demanding layout features difficult greens that are large and lightning fast. Several tricky uphill and downhill lies can be found throughout Maderas Golf Club thanks to the hilly terrain.

My Favorite Course in San Diego
I live in MA but visit San Diego frequently. It was too hard to get out on Torrey Pines, so I got a mid week (Monday) tee time at Maderas. It was cold (55) and overcast, which probably helped in the sense that there weren't a lot of people at the course. The pace was good at about 4 hours. Conditions were excellent as always, and the layout is one of my favorites. What the course normally charges is a bit steep, but the Golfnow price of $76 (before fees) is very reasonable for this place. I try to play it every time I come out.
Overpriced
This is a good course, not not for $200 a round! My wife round alofg for an additional $50. Having Johnny Miller as co-designer is not enough of a price increase! Go play Pams Hill instead and it is much cheaper!!
Interesting Course
Played for the first time last Saturday. Fairways, greens, tee boxes in good condition. Greens themselves are often large, but full of undulations and speeds can vary. Took most of the front 9 to get comfortable with them. Interesting layout with water and forced carries in places. Would go again.
Always a pleasure to play this course
This course is fun and challenging. We played on a Thursday and the pace of play was just right, as we were neither pushed nor did we have to wait. The course was dry, but still very playable. The greens rolled true and were fast, but not outrageous. If you have the opportunity, play this course, it is a gem.
Fast greens
First time playing Maderas. The course has lots of elevation changes and played firm and fast on both fairways and greens. Carts were electric and had GPS which was great to see the hole layout. I didn't eat at the course so can't speak of those amenities but did shower and downside was that there is only 1 shower stall so had to wait a few minutes (not a big deal given that the course wasn't too busy when I was there). As a twosome played in about 4 hrs which was 'slow' but really could have been alot faster if I wasn't taking pictures, videos, and grinding on some very tricky putts! I enjoyed the overall experience and the staff was friendly and very helpful.
Awesome Course!!!!
This course makes you think about each tee shot!
The fairways can present you with some uneven lies. Bunkers had lots of sand in them. The greens are the fastest in the county!!
Not recommended to play if you DON'T regularly shoot less then 100. This course will eat you up making for a very long day.
Amsume course overall, very challenging course with very fast and tricky greens.
A pleasure to play!!!!
Greens were insane
If you choose the proper tees, the course is not that long. However, the greens were rolling out/cut on some slopes. Balls that I thought would stop 3 feet from the hole would roll out to 8 feet away.
Beautiful course conditions but Crazy Fast Greens
The starter warned us the greens were fast and slippery, but after watching the ball make a 90° turn on several greens I had to do a little test. Found a green on the back 9 where the hole was cut on a slope...set my ball down two feet from the hole and watched it slide off the green! Dang that’s slippery and maybe not fair!
So that’s a a bit of a nock against the greens keeper but heck it’s The Farmers this week and I’m sure he wanted to show how manly the green could be.
Course condition was great, much more lush than last time I played. Pace of play was excellent, there was no one in front of us, until we ran into a foursomes with rental clubs playing from the tips...struggled to stay focused watching them spray balls all over the place and then sequentially go to the green to putt out! Where’s a Marshall when you need ‘em. Thankfully we only had to watch that show for the last three holes.
Overall I shouldn’t complain, it’s a fun challenging course in a beautiful setting. If you can play it for under $90, which we did, it’s a helluva course!
Old School Golf Club
Great golf experience! Customer service was top notch. Course was in very good condition and the greens fast and difficult with extreme undulation. Very challenging course and conditions were exceptional. Will definitely be back to revenge myself.
PACE OF PLAY
We were 36 minutes behind pace. No Marshall at all. We had a guy walking and still waited on everybtee box.
Course is always a pleasure, tough so pick your tees wisely.
January review 2018
Winter construction and maintenance going on otherwise great place to play . Can be expensive better dollar wise in spring.
Best round I ever shot
Outstanding staff the starter Paul and the marshal Lloyd were very helpful. Course was in excellent condition. I can't wait to play again when I am back in town.
Now I Know
this course has always been on my radar; I visit San Diego at least twice a year ( have been doing so for last 20 yr.s); I read a review, suggesting strategy in lieu of banging away with driver would be better, but it took five holes & three lost balls for me to throttle back.
Having been an 18-month member @ Bridges, San Ramon, I wasn't surprised to see Johnny Miller as co-course architect, when I was toting my 50/43 - 93
I want another crack at this puzzle; anything 82 or under would make me happy
Pretty but tough
Beautiful but extremely hilly with too much up and down for an older or out of shape golfer. The greens we're in great shape but I'm possible to read.
Gem outside of San Diego
Spectacular course in the hills of Poway. Absolutely gorgeous track. Pristinely manicured course. Great elevations and vistas. Greens especially fast and undulating this most recent play. Great staff.
Country club style golf
Wow. Unreal course
Very demanding off the tee
Bring your A game.
Gotta be accurate off the tee and accurate on all approaches, and it will be rewarded.
Greens were perfect and fast. Staff was friendly and helpful.
All around a great place to play.
Will be back for sure.
Best Course we played near La Jolla
Great course, friendly staff good value. Challenging greens and hilly terrain not length is the issue. Greens are really quick and undulating.
