Maderas Golf Club
About
Maderas Golf Club is one of San Diego's most popular courses. Although it is less than an hour from Torrey Pines, it has a stunning landscape and challenging design that rivals that of the famed seaside course. Maderas may not have the ocean views, but its beautiful landscape provides just as much scenery. Nestled inland amongst rolling hills, the golf course weaves through rocky cliffs and outcroppings. There are mature trees throughout as well as a meandering creek and over forty acres of native wildflowers. There are three sparkling lakes and five waterfalls that come into play on the course. The demanding layout features difficult greens that are large and lightning fast. Several tricky uphill and downhill lies can be found throughout Maderas Golf Club thanks to the hilly terrain.

Nice Course
Course was in excellent condition and a good test of golf.
Pace was slower than I like over 4:30 to play.
course was in great condition and staff was very accomodating . i played at a discounted rate so value for money made more sense than normal rack rate. First time playing the course can make some tee shots more difficult as there are a couple blind shots and unforgiving "miss" areas. Played mid week and pace of play was excellent. Overall a good golf experience.
Great course in beautiful quiet setting
This is a top 5 golf experience in the country. Immaculate conditions, great layout, perfect setting, challenging from all tees, and great staff. Many holes could be considered the signature hole. Love playing it & will return from Az to play it again!
Staff Friendly / Course challanging
When first entering the parking lot you can tell the establishment is above most places you play. Staff greets you at the bag drop ready to take care of you. Friendly staff in the shop and helpful with your pro shop needs. While the girls shopped and purchased a couple items I hit the range. A well stocked with range balls which is included in the greens fee (It should at this price). The course is one you need to play more than once since there are several holes you need to lay up on. The first hole depending on you length can be a lay up hole so if you play here use caution. We played the blue tees and I hit driver into the crew through the fairway. I would hit 5 wood if I play again. The course is challenging and the lay out is fun. Greens are receptive and quick. You need to learn or understand the breaks with the mountain courses. Because a putt looks down hill does not mean it is. I would suggest asking the pro for some advise prior to playing. All in all it was a pleasure to play and the various elevated tees made for some visually pleasing sights. We will definitely play the course again but I do feel it is over priced. I feel it is about a $80.00 to 100.00 course at best.
Wow!
Tried to play Torrey Pines not realizing it had closed in preparation for Farmers. Found Maderas on Golf now as a last minute substitute. My son and I were not disappointed!
The course was very challenging, but not unfairly so. Beautiful shape and great amenities, friendly staff.
Would definitely play again if we get out to San Diego in the future.
Worth the money, definitely coming back for more
The course is in a fabulous shape, greens are fast and smooth. The pace of play was great in the morning, but slower in the afternoon. Great layout, great views. Will definitely come back for more golf.
One of SoCal's finest
SoCal has a lot of great choices for premier public golf, but few have the total package like Maderas.
Troon Golf keeps the course in outstanding shape. The layout is strong, filled with scenic moments. There's plenty of places to lose balls - ponds and desert washes and rattle-snake-laden hazards - but nothing is too intimidating to make the course feel unfair. The finish is especially dangerous. The downhill tee shot on the par 3 15th hole can play as long as 250 yards. That might sound scary but it's not as tough as the next one on the downhill 16th hole. Special land lends to a special experience all the way around Maderas.
Great Experience!
From the time i arrived, it was a first class experience. From the guys at the bag drop to the pro shop check-in to the course conditions, this is a great place to play.
I was first out by myself, so pace of play wasn't an issue. The tee boxes were perfect. The fairways were fantastic and generous, with good bailout areas but also opportunities for long hitters to go deep. Nicely bunkered, but fair. The greens kicked my butt a little, but that was my fault. They rolled true and fast, and exactly where I hit it.
Not the easiest course, but lots of fun to play. And since I'm from Alberta and it was Dec 1, who cares? Lol!
The only reason for rating this course less than 5 stars on value is that it was $170 and golf shouldn't cost that much anywhere. Having said that, it's still $100 less than Torrey Pines and except for ocean views, I can't imagine TP offering anything better in terms of playing conditions or services. Save your bucks for a nice dinner and play here instead. You won't regret it.
Nice Course, soft sand, local knowledge helps
Pretty course. Played alone using a GolfBoard (harder than it looks!). Seemed a little dry, understandable given the weather/season, but greens are in fine shape and pretty receptive. Spent WAY too much time in the sand but I've never had so many plugged/buried/fried egg lies before. Don't know if it was really fluffy sand or just a lot of it in the bunkers but it will be in my mind if I go back there. More elevation change than I expected which made for some tricky, blind shots. Tough without any local knowledge, so don't forget your yardage book or GPS! All that said, a great day out on the course.
Nice but slow
Nice course, First time playing it. Got behind a foursome who had skills but not from the blues. We did not make that 4:30 time limit they ask of you. No Marshall at all on the course. Two groups behind us left 17, and 18 due to group ahead of us and did not finish play
A great course I enjoyed it very much.
It is an excellent course and enjoyable to play.
Best round in quite a while
The course conditions were excellent. The greens were a little slower than I like.
Don't miss this one
Worth the trip and what scenery. The staff are all great, helpful, and friendly. I will make the trip next time I'm in San Diego.
Great scenic and challenging layout
Terrific course. Played with my friends two days ago. Greens were a little slow due to aerification. Other than that, course was perfect. Highly recommend
Maderas golf
I played yesterday. The course was in great condition. Very nice design. Only a couple of things I had a problem with. When I was warming up on the putting green I found that the practice green was a lot slower than the actual greens on the course. Some of the pin placements were impossible because even if you hit it close there was really no way to make the putt.
I got on at a discount rate. If I had not there is no way I would play this course for over $100 dollars. There are two many great courses in the San Diego area that can be played for 75 or less.
Vacation Favorite
While on our second annually Carlsbad vacation, we played Maderas yesterday for the second time. Being from Phoenix where great golf is plentiful, this course has firmly established itself as an all-time favorite. With it's fabulous luxury homes sprinkled throughout, the canyon setting is spectacular. Course design and conditions are top-notch. When we return next year, Maderas will be on the itinerary
Madeiras never disappoints
Amazing qulaity from the course to the practice facilities to the pro shop and restaurant. Whenever I am in the San Diego area I try and get at least one tee time here. The course is difficult though. Lots of challenges from elevation changes, cunning hazards and tricky greens. Bring an extra sleeve or two of balls. The different tees lead to vastly different approaches to how you play this course. Try one and then move on to another during your replay and it's like playing different golf courses. The greens are large, but very fast and you need to be careful reading them. I love this place.
Slow Play
The Starter knows what occurred. I love this course, and I am a local. I realize it's a business, and that I was a single. So was the guy behind me. You don't put singles in between groups of twenty elderly, mixed gender individuals on a course, especially this one. You cannot set a 6+ hour pace on any course that I know of, and maintain your reputation as a quality course. Your answer may be buyer beware, and you would be correct. I didn't see it coming from one of my favorite venues. I won't be back.
Great layout
There are no weak holes on this course. Lots of room for the driver, greens are tough
