Seascape Golf Club
About
Originally Rio Del Mar Country Club, Seascape Golf Club is a classic 18-hole layout perched on the coast highlands of the Monterey Peninsula. Opened in 1926, the course was actually shut down during World War II when it served as a “victory garden” to help grow crops for the nation's war effort. After the war it came back with its new name, but old charm. The golf course is just a half mile from the Pacific Ocean, but it's largely protected by Monterey pines and eucalyptus trees that surround it. Seascape Golf Club features well maintained fairways, strategically placed bunkers and small, tricky greens.

Golf with my lovely Bride! Photo submitted by u849946994 on 03/22/2017

Very disappointing. We had to wait for almost an hour to tee off because there were no keys for the 5 golfcarts that were sitting outside the pro shop. Once we got on the course the pace was very slow, we had to wait for about 10 minuets on each tee box. It took over 3 hours for 9 holes and then we quit because it wasn't worth it.
What happened to this place?
Hi all. The last time I played here about 12 years ago the course condition was excellent. Not sure how or why they have let the course fall into this state of shambles but it's sad. Starting with the pro shop, restaurant and staff. All very good. Onto the driving range. Wow, embarrassing! The 2 bucket I bought were suppose to have 35 balls each but one had 22 and 1 had 28. No biggie but strange. The balls are garbage and area looks like it's unattended. The course layout, area and potential are excellent but they are just not maintaining the course. It's a shame...
Good value in the Monterey area
Nice course in Aptos. Very good pace of play the front nine, even got off earlier than our scheduled tee time. Slowed up starting at hole 11. Still finished in 4 hours, not bad for a Sunday afternoon. Course is hilly, would not walk unless you are in good shape. Course condition was ok, not bad but not great. Driving range is irons only off mats. Course played longer than it looks. We did not use the club house restaurant.
Beautiful landscaping...every hole is different and pretty interesting
requires focusing on all shots, greens are challenging, sloped...beautiful course
Great Course
Super staff.. Beautiful course, super fast greens - Awesome views... Great round...
Thanks....
Nice golf near Santa Cruz
Staff was friendly, quick check in. The starter asked our group if we'd played the course before, since most of us weren't familiar with Seascape, he gave us some useful suggestions on how to play the course. Fairways and greens were in great shape. Pace of play was average for a weekday on the front 9 but on the back 9 things slowed down a bit behind several groups of seniors.
We didn't notice the phone on #9 tee box to call ahead for food. When we made the turn, the snack bar didn't have anything to eat on hand, so we played hungry on the back 9. One of my favorite courses in the area.
Why only a one star?
Positives - there are lots of positives. The grill food (French dip) was good and the waitress was very nice. The guy at the counter was very helpful and got us off earlier than anticipated. The starter was very informative and a great person to talk to. The course condition was great. Love the trees, the rolling hills and shot making carries. The layout was also great with reachable par 5s and challenging par 4s. Nothing wrong with the course except for no ocean view holes. Ok, I really can't complain about that.
So, why only one star? We were following a couple (man and a woman) for the first nine holes making great progress. Then we came upon a foursome at about the 7th hole. The foursome played extremely slow and resulted in at least 5 min wait on every hole and every shot. These guys were oblivious to anyone around them. Ok, that's not the course's fault. Or, is it? We saw the two ambassadors in one cart driving around doing absolutely nothing about the slow play. There was even a single ambassador on the back nine just sitting in one place and falling asleep. Look, I understand that they maybe your friends. But, you also have paid customers getting frustrated. These foursome never even thought of letting the couple in front of us play through. Even when they were so helplessly looking for lost balls. Slow play is one thing. But, a useless ambassador should not be tolerated. The ambassador’s unwillingness to do anything about the slow foursome caused me to have the worst golf experience - thanks guys. I want my money back!
Left after 12 holes
There was a 102 person tournament about 6 groups in front of us, front 9 was not bad, back nine w were waiting 10-15 minutes per hole to tee off and waiting on every shot. Tee box for 13 had 4 groups backed up so we left. The course can be slow pace normally but this was beyond bad.
A Beginner's Review
I found the course beautifully maintained. Most of the difficulty of the course (if you can hit a fairly straight drive) is on the greens. Many of the greens are fast and often have undulations and slopes, consequently much care is needed when putting. Careful of the bunkers. Some afford only semi-reasonable access to the greens. I don't remember many fairway bunkers. Some of the fairways are a little narrow and lined with huge eucalyptus trees. All in all though I think Seascape is a lovely course with many elevation changes.
Muni golf
If only elite courses interest you, skip Seascape. This is a muni that suffers from all the things other municipalities suffer. That said, this track is thoughtfully designed, set in a delicious locale, very reasonably priced, and regular players who cherish their little piece of heaven, warts and all. Priceless.
The nurse was fun to play.
The condition of the course was overall pretty good.
If you got into the rough, it was fairly tall. The greens were pretty fast, but in pretty good shape.
Beautiful!
The course was a lush green from the recent rains and very well maintained, from the fairways to the sand in the traps...and the deer are a welcome sight!
Fun local course with difficult greens
I have played this course a few times since moving to the area. There is only an ocean view from the club house but very close and plays like an Oceanside course. I like the course layout but it tends to back up on number 6 which is a 200+ yd par 3. They should consider moving the tee box forward on this hole since the green is so difficult. They had recently aerated the greens when I was there but should be fine by now. They provided no notice before paying which is poor customer service in my eyes. The course is not to long and pretty wide open just that the undulated/tiered greens make this course not one of my favorites and only 4 stars but overall a good bargain for 40-50 bucks with a cart.
Very good neighborhood course
Local neighborhood gem. Fair for all levels of golfer. Par threes are long and many of the fairways narrow. Greens are fast and multi tiered.
Call ahead and find out how conditions are that day. Sometimes foggy, wet or mowed down and fast.
Seascape in the winter
Great afternoon of golf. Not too boggy.
A bit highly priced
Seascape Golf club is a fair/average course. It is more of a muni course than a resort course. If the clubhouse/amenities were upgraded along with the tee-boxes, I could see charging the added price you pay to play here over a muni course.
Always a fun course
Fairways and greens good condition. Flag positions challenging. Staff and other players on the course friendly, and courteous.
Great day
The course was well maintained, tricky and fun. The coffee was great! The only complaint I have, is that our tea time was scheduled for 8:36am, and they had bumped us up to 8:00am because they squeezed in a larger party for our time. Needless to say we felt rushed at the start, but all in all, we had no one in front of us so there was no stopping and waiting for others.
Seascape
Great day other than the greens had been
punched. Putting was difficult but still
enjoyed the course.
No notice of the greens being aerified which
was a miss by the starter and pro shop and
the website.
I agree. I waited at least 5 min on every shot because the 'ambassadors' were not doing their job. Slow golf can be frustrating and, in my case, ruined otherwise a great golf experience.
