Poor Course Conditions
Even at $27, this course is not worth playing. Greens have fungus, fairway bunkers have little sand and weeds growing in them. Very disappointing conditions for a course that was once worth playing even in average condition.
A Day at the Beach
I had heard Heron Bay was a former tour stop, which definitely sparked my interest. The course/facilities have depreciated quite a bit since the tour days. Flags held together by tape, very old carts, ball cleaning stations with no water...just some of the things that caught my attention.
Course conditions were fair, but the amount of sand traps on the course almost gets ridiculous. The staff was very friendly, but when I signed up for a tee time I didn't expect 4 other groups to start within 5 minutes of my start. Average course, check it out just to say you played it, but I probably wouldn't head back.
Poor conditions
The only thing that I would recommend is the price. All greens were very slow and not well maintained. A high percentage of fairway bunkers had weeds growing in them. They need a new course superintendent for sure.
Bad summer shape
The course was definitely not in good condition since it's "offseason". The listing said gps but all the monitors had been removed. Bunkers had grass growing in them, mounds of cut grass littered the fairways. The pins were on the very edge making it very difficult to land a shot close.
This course has a nice layout
Lots of bunkers. I think they said 93 in total.
The course just needs some directions from hole to next hole.
In all a nice place to play.
Heron Bay
First off, practice your sand shots. There are probably 100 traps and waste areas on this course. I would prefer that they allow some waste areas and traps to be converted to grass areas. You really need a GPS that provides distance to water, traps and waste areas. The first 9, I tried to avoid the traps by guessing distances and failed. On the back 9, I just hit it to the middle of the fairway and If I hit a trap, I just managed it. The facilities are not fantastic, but adequate. The course condition is not great either, but they had at least 20 people working on the course. Workers were on every hole. The greens need new pin placements and need to be cut and rolled. The weather may have had something to do with it. Huge storms moved through late each day resulting in some really wet areas each morning. Overall, I enjoyed the course and would play it again. A good trash pickup weekend would really help with conditions. Provide each player with a bag and ask them to help pick up some trash as they play the course. 3.5 stars out of 5 is accurate. Great value and I get the feeling they are trying to address some of the condition issues. This sure looks a lot better than Chamber's Bay!!!!
Good Value, Fairways & Greens are good
This course is known for having numerous sand traps and tight landing areas. Several of the traps were not playable and had to take relief. The fairways and greens are in good shape.
Inexpensive, but still...
I have played Heron Bay a few times over the past year, and the course has gone from okay to bad. The greens are shaggy, some of the flag-sticks are in rough shape, with one being taped together. The fairways vary from hole to hole, with some drainage issues that has you go from a soggy fairway to a dried out fairway. The sand is still in great shape. The staff is very friendly, the clubhouse still portrays the TPC atmosphere but it seems they are letting the course go.
Precision Golf!
I absolutely loved the course! Yes, the rough was in poor shape in some places but the fairways were in good south Florida summer condition. Greens were a little rough on front 9 but not bad and much better on the back 9. I had taken my vintage kit out with me (Persimmon Woods & 73 Wilson Staff blades) on a whim and the course set up perfectly for them. Heavily bunkered this course rewards shot making vs raw power. Since I have no raw power and enjoy shot making I had a blast! I will now be playing here with the old stuff on a regular basis.
Better than expected
U all know about the sand They are bunkers they are suppose to penalize u. The green side bunkers are great sand to play from. Greens are a little rough and a little fury. Bag drop was good and he pulled it out front of pro shop as he directed us to the same. Checked in and asked for beer---- he said they didn't have any-- maybe tomorrow. I thought he was joking-- unfortunately he wasn't. We asked about a beverage cart. Don't have one. Luckily there is a Marriott next door. Not the cheapest place to buy beer but better than none. We were the only golfers on the course so no ranger was not an issue.
Hot Day at the Dusty Ranch, or How A Good Price Makes Up For Lots of Other Shortcomings.
First Cart, broken steering. A pair of Phalic Drawings on the Score Card.
Came Back, traded that in for one that had broken GPS and Scorecard Holder.
The Practice Greens sucked, which followed for most of the Course Greens. You could almost just call two putts for everything outside of 6 feet to be fair.
The Fairways were fair, but the entire overall feeling is that this once MOST EXCELLENT Establishment is just waiting out its disappearance.
I really hope I am wrong.
Made it around the first nine without seeing another soul on our side playing. We had lunch, and a rest in the AC, but when we tried to play a couple more holes, it was just too much heat, and we split. Not HB's Fault!! And I got the best priced deal EVER yesterday, a Sunday, so am NOT Complaining, just reviewing.
Everyone working there was exceptionally nice and helpful and apologetic...
I will still go back while the rates are so fair/low, but it is so damned hot here in SoFla, I will wait for another cloudy one, which is how we even made it thru 9!! LOL
Good features
Keep your balls on the fairway and away from the many large sand traps, water no problem
COULD NOT PLAY THE COURSE
The Course was in no condition to be played. It was aerated, and the greens sanded, the person in the cashier received our money and then told us that we could only play 1-9 holes, that 10-18 was closed. The course therefore was terrible but the returned us part of our money. We have played this course and it is beautiful and the hamburgers are the best!!! It is a shame we could not played it as our previous visit. Although I recommended ¡¡¡¡
Lots of Sand
6-9 traps per hole
Every shot one has to negotiate bunkers
Disappointed
Played this course a few times when it was a TPC course. Last time I played it was more than 6 years ago. The course was never that interesting but it was always in good shape; well maintained. The course conditions are fair at best. Many of the greens were rough and the weeds and fire ants were terrible. It's obvious they have cut way back on maintenance. There are plenty of courses around in better condition for the same money.
Fantastic Course!
I had been itching to play this course and got the 2nd available tee time in the morning. I finished my round in just under 3 hours and I'm planning on playing again this week.
Lots of sand
Although this course has water everywhere, it seldom comes into play. There are numerous bunkers and sand traps that can eat up your ball. Nice course at the right online price.
HONDA CLASSIC HELD AT THIS COURSE??
From the unmaintained parking lot to the finicky practice ball machine to the lack of rakes for the bunkers on the front 9 to the greens that were bumpy, patchy, and several had what seemed to be "potholes" in them. I cannot believe that the Honda Classic used to held at this course!!
Quality course for the Money
Able to get off early and play quickly...course was in good shape, although it has been better. Very friendly staff. All greens well protected by bunkers, so be prepared to get some sand wedge practice on this course.
