This course was challenging and fun to play
The course was in great condition. Staff were very friendly. I used rental clubs that were brand new TaylorMades. Overall, this was a great experience.
Losing Luster?
I visited this course for the first time this April, and it was hard to envision what this course was like at its peak just a few years ago. Some of what we experienced:
- nobody initially present at the bag drop
- tee times were running 20 minutes behind schedule
- GPS on our cart didn't work, and no additional carts were available. There were no apologies for this. When I suggested we could use the sprinkler heads as guides, staff responded that would be a good idea.
- front nine took 2=1/2 hours, with no marshal to be seen
- the eagerly anticipated beverage cart girl didn't show up until we were at the 8th green. She cautioned us that she was quite busy and that we may not see her that frequently during our round, so we loaded up with ice bags and beverages.
- the wear of age is starting to show in the clubhouse and overall facilities. The ramshackle, chain link enclosure where you buy range balls through a machine is a good example.
On a positive note, I can cite:
- pace on the back nine picked up to 2-1/4 hours
- the starter was a conscientious guy, stressed by the slow play and start delays
- the beverage cart girl, despite her cautions, showed up regularly on the back nine
- the course design is excellent, though you are left to your imagination if you want something between 6,200 and 6,800 yards. Bunkers and deceptive views guard the course well.
Best Value Around
After recently getting bitten by the golf bug, I've been playing every course I can that's in my area. Out of the 8 courses I've played recently, heron bay sits atop my list. Course conditions were good, the staff is awesome, food is great, and even the carts have a cool GPS feature, telling you exact distances to landmarks on each hole. Another plus for me personally, there are not many water hazards. Instead it seems there is a surplus of sand traps. Which is alright by a beginner who doesn't want to go through a sleeve of balls. In the south palm beach/north broward area heron bay & osprey pointe seem to be the best value out there.
It's Still a Treat!
Although Heron Bay is not what it used to be in its TPC glory days, it is still a really fun course to play that will provide you plenty of challenge and adventure from whatever tees you elect to play from. The course conditions are not to TPC standards but much better than many courses in the area. Even though it's about a 20-30 minute drive for me, I enjoy playing the course a dozen times a year or so. It's still a treat!
Love this course
A ton of bunkers, but still very playable and fun as heck. Very nice condition of the course and well maintained. Pretty pricey unless you play the twilight on a weekday, but work gets in the way of that. Look forward to playing again.
Nice and worth to play
It's very nice to play at Heron Bay. My friend told me there are lots of sands so I dare to try my skills to play there. Nice layout and beautiful community around. Maybe after a whole season, the greens seem not so smooth as I thought. It is necessary to control the ball to the right spot in order to avoid bunkers. Anyway I had a nice round but watch out the wind.
Lots of sand
Enjoyed playing Heron Bay again. My sand wedge got a lot of use.
Course has changed
I played this course about a year ago and it was disappointing to find the poor conditions. Greens were bumpy with several grasses on them. Fairways and tee boxes while not as bad were also drastically worse than in years past.
Course needs some TLC before I return.
Excellent Course
First time playing Heron Bay and I will be returning. Great course for all skill levels. Friendly staff.
slow
no rangers... put us out as a twosome in between foursome.
Too many bunkers. Greens are horrendous
Played this course when it was TPC HERON BAY. Since it's changed owners it's not in the same shape. The greens are some of the worst in the area for such a reputable course. There was no ranger in sight and the starter is arrogant. Would still play there again for the price (golf now) but would not pay the regular asking price. Not worth it.
Un terrain où on se sent bienvenus
Le meilleur accueil reçu à ce jour. Très bel architecture de terrain. Beau site. Les verts pourraient être en meilleur étât. Avons aimé notre expérience.
Average
The course was not in the best condition but the layout was fair with very few water hazards in play. My first impression was how had the pros played a PGA Tour Event at this course because, for them, the course did not seem tough enough. The greens were slow but firm and the bunkers were well kept but the fairways and rough appeared dormant when other courses in the area are growing and green.
Very disapointing
This course certainly can't be anywhere to the shape it was when it hosted PGA events. Generally in very poor condition and certainly not worth the price. The greens were in horible condition. The sandtraps, well someone once told me you can tell alot about the pride of maintenance of a course by the condition of their traps. Their sandtraps, while numerous in size, were poorly maintainted. I doubt they have been edged in years and it looks like they don't bother to machine rake them ever. I have never seen so many green side bunkers that were the size of an average sized house with one maybe 2 rakes in them. As for Fairway bunkers, you were lucky if you found even one.
Like the title says, a very disapointing experience.
Boring Layout / Poor Conditions
Played with my father and we didn't have the best time. I would not pay the (discounted) $62 golf now fee to play here. Our biggest complaints were:
1. Layout - Each hole is very similar. Straight with bunkers. Water almost never comes into play. Very forgettable golf holes.
2. Conditions - I imagine the course used to be very nice since it used to host the Honda Classic. Unfortunately now though, the greens were the worst we have played on in the West Palm Beach / Ft. Lauderdale area.
Also, if you are uncomfortable getting out of sand this is not the course for you. There are many huge bunkers on every hole. (My Dad found 17 of them!)
Nice course, surprised at the condition of the greens
Well worth the afternoon rate of $24 but the greens were certainly disappointing. Friendly staff although at 3:30 pm I had no idea when it was my turn to head to the first tee as the starter was gone already. Lots of sand shots and a nice layout. It has been many years since i last played the course and the on cart GPS was very helpful. I'll be back at the right price.
Great Bang for the $$$
Staff was friendly and efficient and course was in great shape considering it's the end of our "busy" season
good design
play this course since many years
maintenance used to be better since Club Links
bought the course.
yesterday, condition was close to be ''poor''
what happened since January?
as expected
played the course when the Honda was still held there. of course its not as nice but the course was in good shape and the price was right
