I was happy with Heron Bay
As a senior golfer the course is challenging yet very enjoyable to play. I was in a foursome with 2 younger "dudes" & a woman. We played from 3 different tees and we finished in 4 hours on a very windy morning.
Really Disappointed!
I can't believe this course hosted a PGA Tour event not so many years ago! Greens were spotty and hard, fairways just fair. Maintenance was working hard on the course but it has a long way to go to bring it back to its glory days! Played as a twosome in less then 3 hours because no one was there. I would not recommend this course in its current condition lots of better courses in the area for the same cost! Boring flat course tricked up with a lot of bunkers. It will be my only trip there!
Overrated
What has happened between 1998 (Honda Classic) and 2014, I don't know, but it has not improved.
Fairways thin, lots of patches of weeds. It is certainly great to play such a famous course and The view of all The sandtraps is really scary, but The conditions of the course are below our expectations, They are even below standard of what you night expect.
Underwhelming
Potentially a challenging and enjoyable course to play. A nice layout and very good practice area but doesn't live up to it's reputation as a past Honda Classic layout.
The glory days are gone unless they put some $ in to maintenance, especially the greens.
Greens were HORRIBLE
Set a tee time for 12:53 was pushed back and did NOT tee off until 1:20. Starter was VERY RUDE & NASTY... I even called the pro shop and was told the director would be out to resolve the issue... Of course NO director came out nor did they even try to rectify the problem. I am a avid golfer who plays year round in palm beach and Broward county... I REFUSE to recommend this course to anyone. The course was torn up and the season rate they are charging is NOT worth the conditions of the greens. I will NOT return there EVER!!
Disappointed
Have been playing Heron Bay the last 3 winters. Used to be in immaculate condition. Not any more. First of all I am a good player and had a terrific score (74) on a very windy day. The greens were bumpy, with bare spots and some patches of weeds. Fringes were mainly thin grass and many patches of weeds. Fairways were not thick, green, and lust like previous visits but thin, some weeds and somewhat brown. Areas off cart paths that get heavy traffic are showing heavy stress and look unsightly. Overall the condition of this golf course is very poor. I only paid a discounted price of $40, if I had paid a penny more I would have been furious. I'd go back again next season because it is challenging, but if conditions haven't improved that will be my last visit. Too many other public courses in the area that are challenging and in good to excellent condition
A little Dissapointed
Expected a bit more from an alleged top golf course. Gave me a cart with no gps (had to change carts at the 10th hole. when I asked why I received a less than complete golf cart, their response was decidedly indifferent, basically couldn't care less. I liked the layout, but the course was in pretty poor shape. My rating was more than generous. Certainly has the potential to be a great course. Looks like a management change is in order.
This course was a TPC course until a few years ago.
The conditions of the course were less than average. The greens were sparse and bumpy. There was debris on every green except 18. The fairways needed to be mowed as did the tee boxes, There were huge rocks in the sand traps. The GPS was inaccurate by as much as 10 yrs. $20.00 twilight fee was about right for this used to TPC course, any more and you're ripped off.
At The Beach
It was a lot of fun. Would go back and play again.
Make sure you have a sand game before you play here. The most sand I've ever seen on one course.
Great course
Fantastic course. Greens are a little fast but course is tough with lots of bunkers and some water. Don't spray it off the tee and you'll be in good shape. Try to get a deal when you play as it's expensive in high season.
For average player, a tough course.
When we arrived, we dropped bags at bag drop and they said we would be delayed because they were waiting on carts to return. Bottom line is they overbooked the course. It took 5.5 hrs to finish. Play was extremely slow. I would not recommend this course for the weekend golfer since it has an over abundance of sand traps. Way too much sand. You can make a great shot and end up in the sand. However, the course was in excellent shape, greens were smooth and fast. I probably will not go back.
okay for the money
Course was okay for less than $40 rate paid, but conditions are not what i would have expected. Design is boring. Seems like every hole was a slight dogleg with deceiving sightline and tons of bunkers.
Bunkers!
I liked this course, but I think because I beat my father for the first time. Mainly because I managed to stay out of slightly less bunkers than him. Course conditions were pretty good, I thought it was as good or even better than Jacaranda which is claimed to be the best condition currently. I also wonder what condition it used to be in back when it was a TPC course, since, in my opinion, the conditions were not TPC standards. Beautiful course though with plenty of water and real estate to envy. We were the second group off so no issues with pace, the 2 in front must have teed off 10 minutes before dawn because we never saw them. Too early for the range to be open apparently due to mowing and the starter was surprisingly rude about it when asked if it were possible to warm up. that would be my only gripe, but other than that, one of the highest end courses ive been to.
How slow can you go?
Quit after 9 holes - pace of play on GPS listed as 17 minutes behind schedule. Was not even close to possible to finish within 4:10 hours and available sunlight. There was NOT A SINGLE time when my group could play ANY shot without having to wait for the traffic in front to move their collective derrieres. You cannot play this game at that pace and expect any kind of flow. I phoned the clubhouse after completing 5 holes at this pace to ask whether they could do anything to move it along and they said they would take care of it - but it made no discernible difference. If my experience was indicative of the normal pace of play - bring along a book to read between shots... maybe War in Peace
Fun last hole
The course was in good shape and the greens were fast and true. The last hole is an island hole and sets up as a nice challenge to finish the role of golf. I would definitely play the course again and I would recommend this course.
Dreadful Pace of Play
I have never played at a slower pace. We waited on every shot on every hole. We paid for 18 holea, but quit after nine holes since the first nine took us 2 hrs. and 50 minutes. I play nearly 100 rounds of golf a year, but I would rather never golfy again, than play at this dreadful pace. They need a ranger. They need to do something to keep play moving. Never played a slower nine.....had to quit.
Heron Bay
Condition was good and only bumpy greens kept it from being excellent. Course seems monotonous with straight fairways line with lots of bunkers. Not really strategic. Played once with a slow group, but returned early the next morning and made it alone in under 3 hours.
sand everywhere, but very few rakes...
I played as a single on a weekday and was able to finish the front 9 very quickly. As I made the turn, things went downhill. Sprinklers were on as I played. Maintenance crew was working and didn't seem to understand the concept of taking a quick break to let the golfer through. I had to skip 3 holes on the back 9 to get away from the workers.
As for the course, I will say the greens were very nice to putt. Smooth and quick. As others said in their reviews, there is A LOT of sand in play. The bunkers are very large, yet for some reason many of them had only a single rake when a half dozen would have been more like it. Not providing enough rakes is a pace of play issue, and something all courses need to be thinking about.
Over all, this course is a good test of your golf game and I will probably play it again, but they do have quite a few things that could be improved upon.
Awesome course guarded by Sand traps
I love this course and I would play it more often if it were closer.
Great value for a very nice course
My son and I really enjoyed our late afternoon round at Heron Bay. It was without a doubt, the best value I've ever got for my money in South Florida in the winter. The course was in good shape with good greens, and could be lengthened to over 7,000 yards if desired. I will definitely play this course whenever the opportunity arises.
