I've played better courses for less money
Played an early tee time with a couple buddies. As is typical, we were held up by a 4some of seniors ( the course is located in a gated senior community) which can be pretty tiring especially when we have a group on our tail. Course is in poor shape and even by winter standards. The holes are narrow usually with a houseline on one side and a tree line and swampy rut on the other. I try to stay away from this course, but I had a bad itch to play. Not worth the money
Great day
I play the Colony at least once a week and often twice based on scheduling. I have learned the character of the staff and the course and I have not yet seen any of the challenges highlighted in other reviews. As an African American I am greeted with how I carry myself, with dignity, respect and as a person desiring to master the course. The course is challenging enough, while short it keeps me entertained. I come to play and the staff has always detailed course condition, play rate...meaning who and how many were ahead of my group. BTW....I never play along and my guests are equally pleased with our outings.
I"m scheduled for a foursome tomorrow 1/15/16 ...knowing its a busy day....I'll get back at you with a review. Our Tuesday was a great day.
Thank you for your excellent 5 star review! We're glad that you enjoy yuor time at California Oaks and we hope to see you again soon!
Hidden Gem
I've lived here ten years and just heard about this place from a friend. A great course, well maintained and fun to play. The greens are as good or better then any around and the fairways actually have grass. A short course but it has it's challenges, like a creek on most holes, but that just adds to the beauty and natural feel. As soon as I walked in, the pro shop made me feel welcome and everyone was friendly. I'll be playing here often. By the way the hamburger and cold beer after was delicious.
Thanks for the nice review! We're so glad you enjoy your time at California Oaks and we hope to see you soon!
Like coming here.
I went here on the day before New Year's Eve during a very hectic week of retail obligations. I like coming here, it's my little escape. The owners and other golfers seem really nice. Jerry and the staff always find a way to accommodate me. I consider myself an intermediate level golfer, so the undulating terrain, blind tee shots, water and ravines, pose a considerable yet not insurmountable challenge. It's not a long course, but many fairways are narrow which adds to the challenge. I like to 3 wood off most tees. And the greens are nice. My favorite times out here are in the late afternoon, on a bluebird day, on the back nine, when the crowd thins a bit, with a crisp iron shot. That's my meditation. Thanks Cal Oaks, I'll be coming back. -Michael S. Cushing.

Course Conditions Terrible
Whoa, what happened? In the 5 years playing this course, I've never seen this poor of conditions. Fairways have no green grass and didn't look like the greens had been mowed. Choppy putts and a bone dry course. Not worth $31+ green fees if the greens are in this poor of condition. Too bad, I always liked this course for quick round.
Thank you for your review, we are working on getting the course back into great shape. We hope you give us another shot!
Short course, not nearly as nice as Bear Creek and other Murrieta/Temecula courses.
Greens need work, no one here apparently owns a divot tool.
Crowded, you get what you pay for.
Hi there and thank you for your review about your time at the course. Some days tend to be busier than other but we hope you come back out again for a fun round!
rude management
I've played this course around 6 times and can't get over the front desk manager and how she's still employed there...must be related to owners is all I can imagine.
I can go into a long winded story, but there's enough other negative reviews on here about same person- just an unfriendly person that hates life.
I'd only recommend the course if it's your last resort, a killer deal or piques your interest - just check in carefully and enjoy your round.
Hoping reviews like this help improve management.
Too Bad
It's really too bad that the staff here is so rude and it's too bad that the course is in pretty bad shape. Why too bad? Because it really has the potential to be a fun little layout. There is no driving range so you warm up in a net. The practice putting green isn't bad. But honestly the only thing this place is good for is that it resembles a golf course and is a cheap place to play.
Day with my wife.
Most par fours are very short, which is why we decided to play this course. Unfortunately, water seems to be placed right at the wrong distance because almost every drive found it! Greens look nice but are so slow we couldn't putt without coming out of our shoes! Narrow holes force you into the rough if you're not accurate and fairways are burnt out in many spots. Don't think this course will be on our list of future destinations. Sorry.
Thelady at the front counter was terrible!!!
I will never play this course again and I live across the street. The lady at the counter was totally sad. She acted like she never seen a African American golfer before and I felt like I was not supposed to be there. Then she actually came out of the office to make sure that I was not taking a golf cart on a 5,000 yard course. Like I said I will never ever play there again and I play twice a week!!!!
Shouldn't have been open
The club house manager has the worst customer service I have ever come across. I have played at this course regularly for the better part of a year, and she is consistently rude. After paying for my round I was notified that the back 9 was closed, and I would have to play the front twice. I thought no big deal. Little did I know the front 9 greens were just aerated and had sand tossed on them. It was impossible to putt. The greens were doused with water, sand, and dirt clods. It was an absolute joke. Under no circumstances should they have been operating knowing the playing surface.
Always good....but not yesterday
Been playing the course pretty regularly, and always enjoyable......yesterday, we found, when we arrived, that the greens were
Being ariated.....and the front 9 was closed......so had to play the back 9 twice......it would have been nice to know that before we committed to the time........I think golf now.com needs to tell customers those things.....
If you did and I missed it, shame on me.......
Overpriced Executive Course
This course is overpriced for what it is. They have made a couple of their par 3's longer to make them par 4's that don't make sense. Staff in the pro shop are rude and clueless. It's not a bad layout, but should never be priced more than $25. Plus the restaurant/bar is only open a couple hours a day.
Nice course but...
I had played this course a year or so ago and back then I remember saying I never wanted to play here again. I had forgotten the past experience and selected this course once more. First let me say that the course itself is very nice although I think they believe it's much nicer than it is. I get the impression that the management really doesn't want non members playing on their course. The only complaint I have about the course is that it was overly watered down considering we are in a severe drought. My ball actually plugged several times on the fairway also the roughs were a bit overgrown. But really my main complaint is the management. The staff was very unfriendly. And although we played on a holiday they closed the restaurant before we even made the turn. I guess it would have been nice if they wanted to close early they could have at least had someone drive around the course asking if they wanted any food or drinks. Which we most certainly did.! Again if you can get past being treated like a second rate citizen and just play the course it's not bad. But if you want an enjoyable experience at all levels. Avoid this course
Great course
The greens were so soft and so lush and the course was in excellent condition.
Good game value for money
Great course for those who wants good pace as not so crowded. Good value for money!!
Short but Devilish
Cal Oaks is a pretty short course for a par 70 but there's great reward for accuracy and heavy penalties for wayward shots.Greens are excellent though very slow. I thoroughly enjoy playing there and will do so again especially since the green fees are so reasonable.
Good day with a friend
My buddy & I had a great afternoon. Good value for the price. Some greens had very tall grass and made a tough time, but overall good condition.
Thank you for your review about your time a the course. We do try to monitor the pace of play as closely as possible, please come back out again!
