Great layout
Only problem was three of the greens had bare patches
Zoysia Rules
Maybe I'm naive when it comes to specific grass. Usually I don't care and just play. However the bounce and the way the Zoysia played was a huge difference.
I have seen some mediocre reviews about this course, and do not know why at all. Every hole was unique and provided its own challenges. The greens had fungal patches but did not really hinder play. They were on the fast side, but really rolled true. The course layout was something that utilized the natural beauty that really stood out.
We played at 11:24am on a Saturday. It was not busy at all, which yielded a perfect pace. No one in front of our twosome, and a couple of singles we let play through.
This course is a little off the beaten path, but if you're in vacation mode I highly recommend one of the best courses I've ever played. The cost to play is amazing as well.
Could’ve been much better
We saw great reviews prior to booking a round here. We were expecting an amazing course but that wasn’t the case. I will say they had experienced heavy rain in the two days before we played so, in their defense, it’s probably better once they’re able to cut more grass. But our experience was that there was no grass that you would want to hit out of unless it was a fairway. First cut was unplayable in some areas. All bunkers had grown up grass around them and none had been raked, so we didn’t even play out of them. The restrooms after the turn were awful and hadn’t been maintained. If you want a cheaper round and aren’t too concerned about quality, you may consider this course. But if you’re on vacation, like we were, and really want a great experience, then look elsewhere.
Island Treasure
Played River Island with my son on vacation from Ohio. Extremely humid and hot but really enjoyed the challenge of this course. Loved the signature hole #3 over the river. Fairways were freshly mowed and bunkers were recently dragged. Greens were spotty but playable. Some very challenging pin placements the day we played. Well worth the drive to play this course. Was frustrated the rate to play was less than the rate we paid through Golf Now.
Out of control
The greens were cut but had bad spots on every one. Fairways were nicely mowed but the rough was waist high. If you miss the fairway, don’t bother looking for your ball. Snake city.
Simply beautiful!
A must play... super challenging! Greens a bit bumpy but on the way to being better!
More difficult than most
Somewhat tough pin placements, greens were fairly patchy. Aside from that, beautiful course.
Try it, you just might like it
A tough course if you don’t hit the ball where you’re supposed to. That’s golf. Fairways are in god shape; greens are coming back from a bad time. Drink cart patrolled all day. Some of the previous reviews were unfair and inaccurate. I would play this course again.
Attention all layout lovers!
Can I just say, what a course! If you are a sucker for excellent layouts, then this is the course for you! Great links style course with awesome tee boxes and fairways. Although the fungus pothole rumors are true on the greens, they pale in comparison to the natural beauty of this wonderful Tennessee course!
Nice round
We enjoy playing here when we visit Pigeon Forge. The fairways were in excellent shape. The greens were a bit patchy, but nothing too terrible. There are some fun and challenging holes around this course. Great value for a round. Will definitely be back.
Problem with Greens
The course for the most part is in good shape. The fairways are outstanding. The reason I would hesitate to recommend the course to someone is because of the condition of several of the greens. This is called to your attention on the 1st 2 greens.
Don't go
I have played this course in the past. This is no longer a great course. When we got the the pro shop guy asked if we played there before we told them we had. He says everything the same but the river is higher. We asked him why it was so dead there today since its 80 degrees he said he doesn't know but the course is in great shape. That's the problem right there the tee boxes are in great shape fairways great shape greens are like a fungus and pothole combined. You cant putt the ball at all see pictures I have added. Almost every green was this way. The cart path is really bad shape even have cones up and red paint where the path has caved in. For the money don't go rather go to a driving range instead since you can do anything on the greens.
Horrible greens
I am extremely disappointed in the condition of the greens on this course!.....They are unputtable due to many dead spots in every green...I have played this course many times and the greens have never been this bad....Overall conditions at this course have deteriorated over the last 5 years....The cart paths are horrible....turn shack was not open....I could have overlooked these things if greens had been playable....Don't waste your money!...I will not play it again this year...
Not well maintained
It was 95 degrees and they did not have the concession stand open at the turn. There was no water in the water jugs and we did not see a snack cart until the 15th hole. Pretty horrible! You can’t not have a place to get water when it’s 95 degrees.
Also the greens were really rough. You couldn’t hit a clean rolling putt. The course is awesome but needs a lot of work.
A good Hot Deal Value
Snack bar was closed and no beverage cart during the week. Not crowded. I was impressed with course layout. Greens were acceptable, but showed signs of winter damage. I will definitely play there again.
Always enjoyable
The course did what it always does. Demand good shots and dazzle you with a great layout and the beauty of your surroundings, River island is seldom disappointing. I love this course. Just enjoy it and hope it never goes away.
Great and poor course
The layout of this course is truly incredible. I have played many of the top rated courses in this country, and almost every single hole here reminded me of holes on the top courses in the United States. Unfortunately the grass and greens were in terrible condition. Almost every green looked like Swiss cheese, with black spots of dead grass all over the place. The fairways had clover and weeds in it. If there was good grass on this course I would rank it in the top 100 in this country. I took many pictures of the great hole layouts
