Green To Tee Photo submitted by gregjm1977 on 03/17/2013
More difficult than most
Somewhat tough pin placements, greens were fairly patchy. Aside from that, beautiful course.
Try it, you just might like it
A tough course if you don’t hit the ball where you’re supposed to. That’s golf. Fairways are in god shape; greens are coming back from a bad time. Drink cart patrolled all day. Some of the previous reviews were unfair and inaccurate. I would play this course again.
Attention all layout lovers!
Can I just say, what a course! If you are a sucker for excellent layouts, then this is the course for you! Great links style course with awesome tee boxes and fairways. Although the fungus pothole rumors are true on the greens, they pale in comparison to the natural beauty of this wonderful Tennessee course!
Nice round
We enjoy playing here when we visit Pigeon Forge. The fairways were in excellent shape. The greens were a bit patchy, but nothing too terrible. There are some fun and challenging holes around this course. Great value for a round. Will definitely be back.
Problem with Greens
The course for the most part is in good shape. The fairways are outstanding. The reason I would hesitate to recommend the course to someone is because of the condition of several of the greens. This is called to your attention on the 1st 2 greens.
Don't go
I have played this course in the past. This is no longer a great course. When we got the the pro shop guy asked if we played there before we told them we had. He says everything the same but the river is higher. We asked him why it was so dead there today since its 80 degrees he said he doesn't know but the course is in great shape. That's the problem right there the tee boxes are in great shape fairways great shape greens are like a fungus and pothole combined. You cant putt the ball at all see pictures I have added. Almost every green was this way. The cart path is really bad shape even have cones up and red paint where the path has caved in. For the money don't go rather go to a driving range instead since you can do anything on the greens.
Horrible greens
I am extremely disappointed in the condition of the greens on this course!.....They are unputtable due to many dead spots in every green...I have played this course many times and the greens have never been this bad....Overall conditions at this course have deteriorated over the last 5 years....The cart paths are horrible....turn shack was not open....I could have overlooked these things if greens had been playable....Don't waste your money!...I will not play it again this year...
Not well maintained
It was 95 degrees and they did not have the concession stand open at the turn. There was no water in the water jugs and we did not see a snack cart until the 15th hole. Pretty horrible! You can’t not have a place to get water when it’s 95 degrees.
Also the greens were really rough. You couldn’t hit a clean rolling putt. The course is awesome but needs a lot of work.
A good Hot Deal Value
Snack bar was closed and no beverage cart during the week. Not crowded. I was impressed with course layout. Greens were acceptable, but showed signs of winter damage. I will definitely play there again.
Always enjoyable
The course did what it always does. Demand good shots and dazzle you with a great layout and the beauty of your surroundings, River island is seldom disappointing. I love this course. Just enjoy it and hope it never goes away.
Great and poor course
The layout of this course is truly incredible. I have played many of the top rated courses in this country, and almost every single hole here reminded me of holes on the top courses in the United States. Unfortunately the grass and greens were in terrible condition. Almost every green looked like Swiss cheese, with black spots of dead grass all over the place. The fairways had clover and weeds in it. If there was good grass on this course I would rank it in the top 100 in this country. I took many pictures of the great hole layouts
Excellent
Course was in great condition, greens were a bit rough in places but overall always a great deal
Excellent time
For the price this course is hard to beat. Challenging layout with scenic views.
Could be a gem!
Really enjoyed the layout and course was set up nicely throughout the river with some fun holes. Unfortunately the bunkers were more like craters with large rocks that damage your clubs when not removed. The greens were in descent condition considering time of year but need some tlc in areas. This course could be a gem with some small investments from management! Sand in bunkers would be a major improvement for course and golfers hitting from them like us hackers do. Hopefully its still available on my next trip to town and improvements are seen
Great course
Challenging course and great price. Surprisingly dry considering all the recent rains
Awesome layout.
Unfortunately, the area has suffered from some flooding. With the course being on the river it was still a little wet and damaged. Nevertheless, I could see what the course is. Hope one day to make it back when everything is dried up and repaired. Enjoyed my round despite the conditions that the course had no control over.
MAKE RIVER ISLANDS GREAT AGAIN..
This review is not meant to rip on this course, but I feel this will be the next course that will follow the fate of Royal Oaks.
I remember years ago this was a jewel to play. Always in tip top shape. Now I understand this is the off season, but what golf course do you play that you can't buy, a bag of tees, a sleeve of balls, a glove? The owners have no interest in making this a good course to play.
The parking lot sits with a mound of sand sitting in it while the course has nothing but mated down dirt in the bunkers. But I can understand because the superintendent is behind the counter. The owners should step up and help out so he could do his job. With Sevierville just up the road you have to do something to bring the people in, but as often as we have played River Island it's obvious that they aren't interested in bringing people in. So I say play it while you can, and if the owners read this get off your can and make this place what it's capable of being. There is a reason Sevierville's parking lot is packed like yours once was. MAKE RIVER ISLANDS GREAT AGAIN.
