Cimarron's Boulder course is desert in location, but almost links in feel. It's hard to imagine even the most beer-cart-fueled hacker thinking they're in Scotland. Considering the bright sun, the striking San Jacinto Mountains and all. But …

"We've had many golfers tell us it reminds them of the British Open," head pro Jason Janke said. "For what we have in the desert, this is probably the closest course to that."

At 6,782 yards from the back tees, Cimarron challenges with length and accuracy. It's wise to keep your ball in the fairway here or you'll get some up-close desert views. Still with three par 4s over 450 yards and two par 5s over 560 yards, bombing away with your driver is anything but completely ignored.

The only negative I found was the course layout does not provide for easy access to the greens from the cart paths. I think this slows play down.

other than that everything was great.

The course is very playable

The greens fairways and practice areas are all in very good shape. Our foursome played in 4 1/4 hours. I was matched up with a very nice threesome. The cart person showed up about twice each nine. I will be playing there again. The price for the course is good . It is not In the same category as either of the two Desert Willow courses which are my two favorites in Palm desert but the price is right.

Black Friday Round

Played on Black Friday while on a trip to the desert. Cimmaron Boulder is a 36 hole layout with the 18 hole par 55 Pebble course rounding out the lineup. Our rate was around $115, which wasn’t bad for the holiday.

The staff was welcoming, from the pro shop to the guy who cleaned our clubs after the round. The course is in a flood control channel so “the wash” is in play on many holes. The land is narrow and flat and doesn’t leave room for any doglegs, so holes mostly run back and forth, which gets a little boring. The course does not come back to the clubhouse at the turn, so plan to use the beverage cart.

Fairways and rough were in good shape. There was plenty of sand in the bunkers.

Greens were smooth, pretty fast and ran true with some subtle breaks. Pace of play was around 4.5 hours.

Cimarron Boulder is a mid-tier desert course. Not up there with PGA West, Desert Springs or Desert Willow, but it is still a fun track for a round with friends.

Nice course - busy

Played the Friday after Thanksgiving, so the course was very busy. Round was 4 and a half hours. Some poor plays out on the course.

Drink cart came around 3 times, which was great.

Course is in good shape, but the greens don't roll true. Minimal, if any break on most puts, even if there's a slope to green.

Course in great shape. Except maybe the traps but who cares. My group decided free lift out of traps. Greens in excellent shape. Not a lot of break.

Decent shape but need to improve pace of play

We had an 11:52 tee time and didn't get off the first tee until 12:15. Took us 4 1/2 hours to play 17 holes. Had to quit due to darkness. The course is only 6000 yards from white tees. We waited on every shot. On the par 3s there were 3 groups on the tee on the back 9 (3 par 3s). Very painful. Shouldn't be so slow. Not sure if I will go back.
