John Fought and Tom Lehman collaborated on the course at Verrado Golf Club, a voluptuous design that meanders through the old Caterpillar bulldozer proving grounds. It's up and down for 18 holes and that doesn't mean "chip and a putt." The course is good test with chances to score and a handful of memorable and scenic holes.

Where Verrado Golf Course will eat you alive is in the bunkers. Some bunkers are hard to carry, others collect wayward shots. But the fairways are wide enough to avoid trouble, and what appears to be the safe shot off the tee will often bring greenside bunkers more into play. So pick your poison.

While the back nine is far superior to the front, going out still has its fair share of memorable holes. A huge boulder 30 feet tall on the par-4 eighth jets out from the left side around which the fairway shapes itself. A perfect line from the tee box is to take the ball five yards right off its edge, but hitting the boulder is certain death by desert. The boulder was scheduled to crumble via dynamite, but stood up to the TNT and was deemed an immoveable object. Open and playable for all skill levels, the Verrado Golf Club is a sublime experience.

Great layout, fun course

This was a fun course to play as long as you stayed out of the dessert. Good condition with fast greens and a great layout. The staff were very friendly.

Great course in excellent shape.

This course is very fun and challenging. Beautifully carved into the granite rock. My favorite course to play in the West Valley.

Greens in bad shape

The greens are very rough and do not roll well. This should be noted when they offer tee times and the rates should reflect this.

Verrado golf course

Way overpriced course. For $180 course I thought the course would be immaculate. Nope. Greens were awful. Played a course today for under $100 and was better shape. If I paid $80 ,

I would be fine, but no way was that a $180 course.

Amazing Course

I have nothing but positives to say about my experience at the course! This was my first round at the founders and right when you pull in the views are amazing and it stays that way on the course as well. The staff is extremely nice and very helpful. The course was in great shape and the greens are fun but challenging!

Beautiful course, but…..

First off I want to say that the staff was extremely professional and friendly from the start. The fairways and tee boxes were immaculate. The problem was that about five or six greens were almost unplayable! One of the guys in my group was a member and said that the overseed hadn’t gone well. The only other negative is the lack of GPS. Unless you play this course often, you have no idea where to hit and where to avoid. A course charging these kind of rates could afford GPS.

Wonderful Experience

I've played the alternative track on the property but the Founder's Course is the gem - great staff and layout. Looking forward to a return visit.

Worth the trip out there

Overall it was a good experience. Started out a rocky when I tried to have my autistic spectrum 8 year old son, whom I'm trying to introduce to the game, accompany me in the cart. Stephen in the golf shop insisted on charging me for him, even though he didn't bring any clubs and wasn't playing. In support of junior golf and expanding the game, I was hoping they would just let him ride along. I eventually negotiated to pay a cart fee for him. I guess they just wanted or needed the extra money that bad. But then they said the didn't have a cart for us and refunded my money! Fortunately, the outside service guys were top notch and pulled out another cart from the barn. I went back in and paid and off I went, albeit with no warm-up at this point.

The course itself was in decent shape and for Phoenix prices in the winter and wasn't a bad value. Front nine is fairly flat but back nine has a lot of elevation changes. Never had a bad lie in the fairway and, despite having a few thin spots, the sloped greens rolled smoothly with medium/fast speed. What would be the thicker rough around the greens was dormant, but the sand in the bunkers was well maintained and on the fluffier side. Only maintenance issue would be the tee boxes. Many are fairly small so it's hard to spread the tee markers around. As a consequence, areas on the white and silver tees get worn down and uneven.

The Grille was very nice and reasonably priced at $15-30 a plate with $6 beers. In addition to the inside restaurant, they have outdoor dining with a separate outdoor patio bar. People and families from the neighborhood were getting on a wait-list to dine for dinner. As it was winter, they had fire places and warmer lamps going when the sun went down. Looked to be a pretty popular place certainly a good amenity for after the round (or pre-round breakfast/lunch).
