Tuesday a.m. Round
Paid $23 on golfnow. Com. Good deal right? Not really because when I got to the place, only back 9 was open due to aerification. Then there was a ladies tournament. Group ahead of us on 10th tee turned around and left. I wanted to do the same but I drove far. I played 9 holes for what I thought was going to be a morning 18-hole round for me. I was disappointed!
Always nice
Ancil is always a great course. Tight fairways, trees, lots of trees, lots lots lots of trees. Course is always in great condition. Pro shop is always great and has a good staff. I came for a nice twilight round 3:00 and had a great time. As a good note for those hoping to get in a afternoon round good cart will only come by once as they stop at 5, you will see a Marshall a few times on front nine but never on back nine. Play should have sped up on the back as a lot of groups only played 9 but instead it got slower. I think some help from the club could have helped speed it up but didn't happen. When I showed up starter was showing 4-3/4 hour average round time which was scary considering a $33 twilight cost and cutting it very close on finishing with the sun up. Overall course conditions were great and as always I love the interesting layout forcing the 3 wood to come out off the tee as much as the driver
Beautiful Day for golf
The coursr was in great shape. The greens were firm and fairways groomed well.
We had 3 sets of 2somes ahead of us with a father son tryng to teach the game of golf.
Wrong type of course for on course lessons.
Very slow and ruined pace for us.
Tough to hit, sit, wait, wait, wait, wait .
Hit wait over and over.
People need to realize if they are not ready for real course.
Sunrise Arcade, foothill, or Scandia.
Not golf course fault or is it.
When you are stacked 4 groups deep behind a 2some.
Just saying too beautiful of a day for golf.
Would definately give this one another try and hope for better pace becouse the rest of the experience was excellent.
great course
I will be looking to play this course every Friday between 9:00 and 1:00. Would like to be notified of Hot Deals. Thank you
Trees
Very nice course, have played it many times. Lots of trees and sand traps. Greens were in very good shape as were the fairways. Tee boxes were in good shape and traps had plenty of sand. It rained hard the night before but the fairways were running and no cart restrictions. Have to be fairly accurate with your shots as trees can alter your next one. Beautiful course, you will enjoy playing it. People in the pro shop told us everything we had to know before we went out, I like that. Anyway the course is well worth playing.
Wilderness sanctuary
Course in pretty good shape. Greens a tad slow and bumpy, Fairways pretty decent. Tees were way up. Had to play back tees
Etiquette
I'm going to split this review into two parts because it is not fair to judge the course itself based on my experience last week. First, the course was in pretty good shape, the fairways were well maintained and the greens were OK. Some greens showed evidence of players not repairing their ball marks which made it difficult to putt at times.
The real issue I had was with the other golfers on the course. They were loud, slow, and had no understanding or didn't care about any type of golfing etiquette. On hole #3 my cart (i was sitting in) was hit by a ball from the group behind us without so much as a warning. After confronting them there was not an apology...who does that??? On hole #4 we had to wait for 2 groups to tee off because the pace of play had slowed so drastically. That is where the round really took a turn for the worse. At no time did we ever see a Marshall and the course made no attempt to hurry play along. At the turn they let out a group in front of us so we had to again wait.
I don't think I'll be going back any time soon.
overall, a very positive experience
considering the time of year, I would say the course was in pretty good shape. The Greens themselves, were in outstanding condition. Dave, the Starter/marshall, made the rounds many times keeping the pace of play moving at a good pace.
Gem in the Rough
Overall condition of the course was pretty poor, granted it was January so you can't expect the best turf conditions. Sand traps were horrible and not maintained whatsoever. My general observation was this course is overplayed and under maintained. Great layout and decent yardage from the back tees. With a little love (and some money) this could be a great golf course. Another suggestion, get a Goose Dog... Chase those geese off the course our they will take it over. Given the Green fees here, I'd consider a lot of other choices before coming back.
A comfortable friend
I have played Hoffman since the seventies. Over the years it continues to be a great test. I, like many others am not a fan of the new par 3. I miss the old one but what can you do? Overall the course is maintained well and is still a pleasure to play.
First Time
Found the course to be in typical condition for the time of year, with little rain.
Beautiful course with umpteen million trees
Probably the best muni course in the region. Smooth cart paths keep the travel easy and carts have ball/club washers. The course was wide open on this cold day in December so play was as fast as you want. The trees are really something to strategize and the greens are well protected with sand traps. The greens were a little rough because people don't fix their divots but overall a great course and staff with a top notch restaurant.
Course is fun
The course is fun but some greens were seeded and had a lot of sand on them and was not bought to our attention. The 14th was the worse. Rest of the course was fine. Speed of play was good. Staff always friendly.
Pace of play was slower than I like
This is a great course and I have played it many times however it seems like they need more marshalls.
Course is playable be ready for some out of tree shots unless you always hit ball straight.
except for the greens being a couple of weeks after being punched course was great
Lovely course.
The greens were recently aerated but were healing nicely. I booked a tee time for one and was paired up with a two some and a single. I'd have much preferred to just play as a pair and wish the course was as attentive at enforcing the pace of play as they were at making full groups.
The course is in good shape but the greens are not!
I booked a time on Golf Now a day or two before we played. There wasn't a warning about the greens being recently punched. When I questioned this in the golf shop at Ancil I was told that it had been two weeks since they had been done. The course was really in nice shape but the greens had not healed very well at all. I would recommend this course to a friend, but not at this time.
Greens Not Healed from Aeration
The GolfNow warning is off about the greens being aerated but they are still very sandy and bumpy and you will not get a decent roll on any putt. The rest of the course is in great shape and except for the reworking of hole 4 teeing area and 14th green is how I remember it. Was first one out by myself and did 18 holes in 2:40.
Had a great time on a beautiful course.
I plan to play this course again in the near future.
