Nice challenge for local muni
Great course to work on your long game.
Long and controlled shots required.
Park-like setting
A fun layout, the front nine was sanded, so got to play the back nine twice. A lot of mature trees, but the fairways are not too tight. Bunkers have nice sand consistency and greens were in good shape. A lot of leaves on ground in primary rough and can loose a ball there. Close to the American river so even had some wild turkeys as company on one hole. First time to play here, definitely want to come back.
Ancil's Revenge
I was expecting a challenge because of the narrow fairways and the trees. You have to stay within your game and try not to go too far and reach more than you're capable of great course.
enjoyed the scenery and wild life
Really enjoyed this course, a bit surprised that there were no employees around the course.
Why book early?
Booked a 6:14am tee time on labor day so we could play fast and finish in less than 4 hours. All went well on the front 9, made the turn and every tee box was backed up with golfers that were sent off the back. It turned what was supposed to be a fast round of golf into a miserable back nine. The course itself was in good shape but the lack of communication and letting groups off the back goes against the fast round designation of my tee time.
Fantastic course for all kinds of wildlife
This is a beautiful course full of wildlife. Deer, turkey, geese, coyote, etc. I did not feel the fairways were as narrow as some had previously declared. The fairways were well maintained and bunkers strategically placed. I found the greens to be very deceptive. I continually played either too much break or not enough. I felt my pace was good as the ball was always close to the hole. This is a great course to play and I plan on making it a regular stop.
Great condition!
Staff is great. Course is in great condition and well maintained. New par 3 (no. 13) is still rough but the rest of the course is fine condition.
greens rolling great
Prime time conditions for Ancil! Fairway's rolling well; plenty of shade; newer carts
Solid course, late summer condition, early morning fast play
I play Ancil Hoffman regularly but have never rated the course. This course offers five sets of tees (Gold, Blue, White, Black and Green) and has been around for a long time. Generally the course is in good shape for a public course. I tend to play very early in the morning so the pace is good. With that said, the pace in the middle of the day can approach five hours. Most of the greens are in good shape. At this point in the year, some parts of the fairways are marked with ground under repair. Two years ago the 13th hole was moved to a different green and the new green has just never grown in right. I have heard the soil was contaminated but I cannot confirm. I would still recommend this course to any and all players. The wild life is abundant and facilities are good.
Better than expected, but not the norm
I've played here several times in the past, and have stayed away due to the marathon rounds of 5+ hours (pace of play). I booked a late afternoon round (3 PM) and really didn't expect to get all 18 holes in. The price was worth the risk and I had a back of the head, hope, that the heat might keep the hacks at home. I teamed up with another that had the same hopes. The pace of play was exceptional and we finished at 6:30. I do not claim that this is the norm here, and actually warn that one time out of over a couple dozen shouldn't be expected, in fact the opposite is true. The nicer the weather the longer the round will take here. Also if you don't hit the ball down the middle off the tee's (or your buddies in your group don't) this course will eat you up and drive that pace of play longer and longer.
Disappointed in Ancil Hoffman.
My most recent visit I scheduled a tee time at 624AM we didn't get called to start until about 635AM. We finished 18holes at 1105 however, staff stated we needed to pick it up. On schedule and with the foursome ahead of us finishing their putts we stated that we'd try to pick it up.... As the Marshall drive past we asked amongst ourselves is it our fault that we were stacked out here and put behind schedule from the start? Just so the AHGC could make a few more bucks before a tournament. I've booked plenty of times at this golf course and would've gave it 4-5stars, but lately they've been trending down in customer service and its really disappointing. I've played AHGC 3 times in the last week and this week and possibly from now on I will go to another course.
it was a great day, golf course in good condition.
enjoyed my round of golf very much. it was grest from booking the tee time to course staff and the overoll condition of the golf course.
there were some spots of standing water on the course.
I went early to practice and they Asked me if I wanted to go out early They were very accommodating and let me go
Beautiful course or you wouldn't even believe it was should be There Nice pro shop very very friendly
Very Fond Memories Here
The course is very challenging as it is fairly long and every hole is lined with very large oak trees. Breaking 90 here for a mid-handicapper is a worthy accomplishment. I have fond memories here as I recorded my first Hole in One here on the 168 yrd Par 3 #5 hole and an Eagle on the long Par 5 #10 hole. Other than those 2 rare occasions the course has consistently gotten the better of me. Often you are waisting a shot to punch out of the trees. The course is in very good condition and presents a good test at every level of the game. One complaint is they are very stingy to pass along any discounted green fee values...even thru GolfNow.
My Favorite Course in Sacramento
I like to play this course from the burgandy tees as it offers the best challenge for my skill level. The fairways are wide but will punish a very errant tee shot. The greens are very well kept and protected by just the right amount of bunkering. The course has good variety to keep your interest and a low score here will be well-earned.
enjoy the couse, like the tees after moved forward
like the course, like the tees after moved forward and enjoy the staff
"I Love This Course"
My first time playing @ Ancil Hoffman. Reminds me of the muni courses in San Francisco and Oakland, lots of trees, must hit your fairways on drive in order to score. The pleasure was all mine.
good course
We play this course every time we come to Sacramento because it is a nice layout and very fair.
A great established golf course.
The course is in excellent condition. The staff is always friendly and helpful. A nice driving range and practice putting and chipping area.
Course maintenance has really improved in last few years. The best greens I have played on in a long time.
Course was in best shape ever of 15 years I have played.
