great course
I have played this course off and on for over 30 years. It was in as good condition as I have ever seen it with one very big exception. The bunkers were HORRIBLE. Fairways, rough, and greens were perfect but the bunkers were compacted dirt. I've now found the worst bunkers of all time. Pace of play was 5 hours plus. Longer than I would have liked.
Well mainatined
Beautiful course, long, challenging...well maintained, my favorite place in the area!
great condition
We play just before the Memorial tournament and the course is in the best shape I've ever seen. Fast smooth greens-narrow fairways cut close-and rough areas mowed and maintained. Many scratch players were doing practice rounds-amazing to see and challenging for them too.
Love the course. Greens in good condition, fairways great. Good pace of play
Moved along real well and had a great round. Found the greens to be in excellent condition. Love the tree lined fairways. Had a sandwich and refreshments which were reasonable in price. Nice golf shop, too.
Overall the course was in good shape.
The pace of play was very slow even for a weekend. I was playing with two of my sons, who play very little, however, we waited on almost every hole.
Love the challenge of all the trees... Too much goose droppings all over the greens.
Overall great value for the price. Too many geese droppings all over the greens.
Ancil Hofman
My favorite course. The staff is very helpful and attentive. The course and surroundings are absolutely beautiful.
Great pace of play
I had a 6:08 tee time and got off a little earlier than that and was finished by 9:30. Greens were in good condition and had a quick pace.
Old school parkland course. Challeging layout
Always one of my favorite Sacramento Valley courses, especially in summer when the tree lined fairways offer plenty of shade. The course gets a lot of public play. The greens can suffer and the pace of play can be glacial on weekends. Low greens fees are rare. Currently the course is in very good shape. Maintenance is better than average for a muni. There are plenty of tee options. Any skill level can find an appropriate set of tees for their game. Step up, pay the freight, book an early round for a better pace of play. You should have an enjoyable round on an interesting track.
My all time favorite Sacto. course
When I worked there 25yrs ago, Pro Dave Carr and I would either be 1st on or last out, due to an inability to keep rounds under 6hr pace. Well, after moving to Maui & working @ Makena, I am back & wanted to play this gem, but am a 4hr or less kinda guy. What a turnaround in the pace- under 4hrs & viewed 10+ deer, about 10 hawks & a peregrine falcon, there was a meeting of the Carmichael turkey gang that seem to only walk in front of drives as if they were playing chicken. I call that double your fun @ 1/2 the cost.
Beautiful walk
The course is in great condition. It is a beautiful park with lots of old trees and wildlife. As a high handicapper I appreciate the 5 options at the tee box. I walked, but I think I'll ride next time I visit because I was running out of gas there around hole 13. Great specials on winter wear and last years equipment. Now is a good time to visit.
Golfnow did not warn only half course was open, high cart fee
We played back nine twice - no warning of that...
Slow pace - lots of waiting
A deceiving course

The staff and the pro shop are amazing. Very friendly staff and well stocked pro shop. I used my GolfNow voucher so a $44 round was something like $25 and that included a $4 bucket (15 range balls. For $5 you get 45, but i wasn't complaining, it was included)
The range was pretty good. For iron shots you were told/informed to hit from the mats and if you tee anything up, then you could hit from the grass.
The course was pretty well maintained, just the normal winter issues with some patchy wet spots and the obligatory trees dropping twigs everywhere. The greens are in good shape and were playing really fast. Bunkers were in good shape as well, but they were not my friend that day.
The reason I put that this is a deceiving course is that the fairways look wide open, but they play VERY narrow. I spent more time playing a punch shot than taking full shots. If you've played Apple Mountain, then you'll get what I'm saying.
Been Playin Ancil for 25+ years
No I'm not Partial to Ancil- I just iknow it is a great course and well worth the money paid- especially for a Muni course. The amount of rounds played on this layout is staggering verses the local "higher end" courses. My saying for Ancil goes like this: "When you think you are playing well - play the GOLD tees and Ancil will Humble you once again". And to think this course has been down by the river since 1965- this place must have been a absolute brute back then compared to the technology we have today". Love Ancil each and every time I play it.
My Son and I will go back, it was very nice!
My Son and I played after a great lunch in the resturant at the Club House. The course is flat and has a few hazards, water and bunkers, lots of trees. We played on a Sunday and it was full. Recomend reservations or you may not get on. I book 5 days in advance. Very friendly staff. The fairways were a littel dry with short grass and sand under. Good for role. Overall we plan to go back.
Its a great course and staff is excellent.
First time in last 5 years that didn't have to wait at the tee anywhere on the course. Management has either spread tee times, not started players on back nine after first 45 minutes of the day, or not very many people were playing it was nice for a change. That is how a golf game should be played. Thanks Ancil staff and management.
This is a great older established course. I love to play here.
Great older course. I really enjoy golfing here, and have for years.
Pace
I love this course, always have but the pace was the worst I have ever experienced. I had a noon T Time and it took my foursome 3 1/2 hours to do 9 holes. Ancil had a 3 hour frost delay. The flipside is, the course is in great shape and played well.
One of my favorite courses Anywhere
Nice fast round, flat layout but pretty well maintained
Nothing special, very confusing on which way to go on the cart path, could use some direction signs.
I was very disappointed with this coarse. I booked a Tee Time at 11:20am on Dec. 27th from Golf Now. I work hard for my money, so I play where ever the best deal is most of the time. Anvil Hoffman Golf Coarse charged 37.00 to play and this is walking fee. If you want a cart it's another 16.00 each their very proud of their carts, plus there is no GPS on the cart. 53.00 dollars per round is not a savings in my book. The coarse has nothing special, no WOW factor. Not worth it. There are better coarses in the area for less. WILL NOT RETURN.
