Fecies everywhere
Where ever you are on the course, the tee box, the fairway, the rough, the bunker, and even the green, there is fecies EVERYWHERE
love the course but .....
either the course did not disclose to golf now or golf now did not report that a tournament was being played just prior to my scheduled tee time, only got 5 holes done in approximately 2 hours.....the course did provide a rain check.....
Ancil is still the jewel of the county!
Ancil Hoffman is in great condition and always provides a challenge with creativity and course management. Tree lined and slower greens make this course a test of skill for any golfer.
The only negative was the service at the "Main Event". It felt like a sparring match with the waitress who didn't get our order correct that we called in and said it was our fault and that was that. Everything else was great.
They don't participate with the First Tee
The course was dry, to be expected. The one thing I didn't like was that they don't participate with the first tee on-course card for Jr's. They only give a $5 discount after 2 instead of charging only $5 for the round. They claimed it has been that way for the past two years but this is the first time we were charged this.
This course is not as good as it used to be...
Maybe it's a change in management, but we have been disappointed and overcharged several times at the course. They do not appear to support junior golfers. Our son has a Youth on Course card and plays quite a bit in the area. Ancil Hoffman advertises $5 green fees for juniors (twilight) on the NCGA YOC website, but would not honor the advertised rate. The course has not been maintained as well and despite the marshall on the course, he was ineffective at maintaining pace of play. This used to be our home course, now we will have to find another course - one that supports our junior golfer and doesn't argue with us over green fees. I hate having to check my receipt every time we play - such a shame.
Ancil Hoffman Trees
Have played this course for years. Great to walk or ride. Great views and wildlife sightings. Tree lined holes call to you like sirens on the rocks!! Don't go there!! Tee boxes and fairways in great shape. Greens multi-tiered and subtle breaks. Watch your food as birds & animals w/take it from your carts. Only subpar green was the new #14, I think that's the one. Punched & sandy; it was rough.
Excellent courae, needs pace of ply management
The golf couse is about the best kept public course, I haver seen in California. Extremely good shape and very challenging from any tee box. Highly reccomend it. One main issue continues to be pace of play. Marshalls do nothing but ride around in carts. They either don't know what they are there for or they have no auhority to do anything.I played on a Wednesday and it took more than 5 hours to play. Continually waited on every shot at least 10 minutes.
Favorite public course in Sac!!!
Love the Mature Trees and Nature everywhere! Love the length from the tips! The deer, Turkey, Geese and People friendly squirrels! Oh yea the course is consistently in good shape year around!
Ancil Hoffman
Great course for a muni........always enjoy playing there. Dont play in the fall...too many leaves as there are many trees on this course.
Easter Weekend
Course was in very good shape. This is a county run course. Pace of play was pretty slow but it was a beautiful Saturday on a 'holiday' weekend. They have pretty good marshalling here it seems-but they allowed a 5-some on...that was following a 4some of seemingly newer golfers..that didn't have a 'pace' or 'ready golf' mentality. Golfers need to think ahead a shot or two- what club, where to leave the cart, how can they allow play behind them to advance and how to pick up a putt when this isn't the PGA tour when you see 5 carts stacking up at the tee box. Ready golf tips should be given by the staff...since many newer or 'casual' golfers don't always know these things. Also- people that aren't so good should play from the correct (shorter distance) tees. If you're learning-go to a cheaper/shorter course or go when it is 'off hours' later in the day or during the week..and if people are constantly on your butt- let them play through. A golfer should always be just a shot behind those in front of them (unless it's a slower time) when you may have all the time in the world. Overall it's a great course- and I will come back midweek and play or play when it's really hot and less full.
Good golf course
Course in very good shape. A couple of holes could us a tree trimmer on the right side of fairway. Branches really overhang and know what it is for vut that makes landing areas on 15 yds wide for a public course.
Most bunkers have a hard surface just a a couple of inches down and there is no way to know that. Need more forgiveness in my opinion as hard to spin bunker shots even with good lies which there were few because of poor raking by ahead players.
Love it
Ancil is one of my favorite courses and one of the best in sacramento
Classic Course
Ancil Hoffman is a beautiful course with many challenging holes. We often see many kinds of wildlife and the number of birds is beyond belief. The course is in great shape. We play here as often as we are able and it's always a joy to return.
Nice Old School Course
Narrow, Mature Trees, Great Conditions. This is a great old school mature course. Must work the ball to get around and score. The course isn't long but with the angles and tight fairways, it is no pushover. Not a course to overpower. Great round, but a bit slow. I am from Texas and recently moved to California, I am learning that there is no such thing as a 3.5 hour round in California.
Great staff
If I had been notified of the recent aeration of the greens, 5 stars would be my rating across the board.
I played the back 9 first alone, with the help of the complimentary yardage book. When I made my turn in 70 minutes, I was paired with another single. As a twosome, we waited on the foursome in front of us several times, but still played in less than 2 hours.
Next time, I'll walk, as the course is fairly flat, with green to tee distances minimal.
They have an excellant practice facility. A stocked pro shop, and marshals patrolling constantly.
They "brag" about 4 1/2 hour < rounds! And seem well organized to accomplish this.
I played on a warm beautiful still day. I recommend spiked shoes for a.m. rounds, as the dew made the turf a little slick. The rough plays thick and tough, so avoid it as often as possible.
Horrible Greens
Play this course if you love bouncing balls while you putt! The greens were God-Awful. There is such a thing as "over-aerating"!!! There were holes filled with divot sand every square inch. Makes for a very challenging day when you feel like you're on The Price Is Right playing horizontal plinko. Other than that, the course was in great shape.
Over Good Experience
Good value. The Greens were recently punched so putting is rather challenging. Otherwise, course was in great condition! Other than very slow pace of play, I had a pretty good experience. Staff is very friendly and inviting!
Great deal, but....
They should disclose up front that they are aerating the greens. We just assumed a two putt on every green due to the bumpy ride on the greens. There was also a slow pace of play, never saw a marshal to get the slow folks going. The GPS unit in the cart is pretty useless. Saw the beverage cart twice, which was good.
spring conditions at hoffman
Greens were punched last tue , so greens are still very bumpy . all other aspects of the course are in perfect condition - tee boxes , fairways and rough are all freshly cut and look great ! got a discounted tee time due to punched greens and played a quicker than average time even though we started at 10:30 am ! great day at hoffman !
