Poor pace of play
Due to tournament, the pace of play was very poor. Marshall made no effort to make changes.
One of the best in Sac
One of my favorite courses in Sacramento area. Excellent and challenging course layout.
Bring balls and a book
Great course but pace of play is slow...5 -6 hour round
Amazingly dry and firm soils
With all the intense rain this winter, I wasn't optimistic about going to play a round. But when I got out there, there was very little mud and the greens were impeccable. Very impressed by the course conditions and happy I took advantage of the break in the rain.
Leaves from the gates of below
The course itself was in good condition, even though it rained for 24hrs 2 days prior. (Cart path only) The greens were unusually slow for this course. Most fairways were pretty good but then you get to some and LEAVES, there were so many leaves you couldn't even see the fairways. I lost 6 balls because of leaves. You could hit the best shot in the world straight down the middle and loose it in the leaves. I should know better to play this course during fall and winter. No water buckets on course so you better bring something to drink. They didn't even have anyone driving around with water buckets nor a cart girl. No Marshall, so play was extremely slow. I probably won't play nor will I recommend anyone to play this course. I'd rather play Antelope Greens which is up the street.
NOT RECOMMENDED
Very nice golf course
First let me sat that we played this course a day after we received over 2" of rain.
This was my first time here. I went into the club house and noticed right away that they have a lot of equipment and accessories for sale, and a lot of good sales going on. This is a very nice clubhouse.
The practice putting green is nice, the driving range is nice.
The course was beautiful and well maintained. I played the gold tees for most of the round with a few white tees on the par 3's. The course is pretty long and I love all of the challenges.
There are a lot of trees, a few forced carries, and a few water hazards.
Due to the recent rains, the back 9 was closed because of some flooding. Dry creek was running very high too. We had to play the front 9 twice which was a good thing because I learned where and where not to hit the ball on the 2nd time around.
The only 2 issues that I had, and they are not the fault of the golf course were the fairways were very wet with lots of standing water, and the leaves that fell of of the trees. I lost several balls in play because I couldn't find my ball under all of the leaves or in standing water.
The staff here were all friendly and enjoyable to converse with.
I want to go back and play again when it isn't so wet.
BTW I shot a 63/52, so you can see that the 2nd time around really helped my already average play. I am an average 95 to 105 player on courses similar to this.
I lost 6 balls on the front 9 (2 in the water that had pooled up in the lower areas and 2 in some leaves, and 2 in the deep grass along the fairway. I never went out of bounds)
I don't remember the hole number on the front 9 (it night be #6 or #7) but it's a long par 4. You must get a long and accurate drive if you even have half a chance to reach this green in 2 shots. If you are too far left or too short, you must choose to try to hit over a large lake as it could be about 200 yards + uphill a little to get there. The other option is to hit about a 70 to 100 yard lay up shot, then hit about 120 yards to a well protected green (Bunkers all around and tules to the right.). On the way to the green, around this large lake, you go over a pretty bridge. This is a gorgeous hole!! You will see it in my photo attached.
Cherry Island, I like your course a lot and can't wait to get back.
Lack of Maintenance and Staff involvement!
Very unimpressed with course conditions and staff expertise. The course consistently allows multiple 5-somes that clearly impact playing flow. The starter at the 1st Tee stated he had no control over player flow or placement - all dictated by the Pro Shop! During the round, the course Marshall stated that he had no authority to challenge improper play, slow play, or improper cart usage. Our round took 5 hours and 20 minutes to play 18 holes. When asked about "ready golf" the Marshall asked us what that meant. REALLY? Play about 18 different courses in the Sacramento area on a rotating basis weekly and have to say that Cherry Island is consistently the most poorly maintained (balls lost in the middle of the fairways, excessive leaves allowed to blanket the fairways, lack of mowing of fairways, etc.) The bunkers lack sufficient sand, are often dirt (although most courses these days are deficient in this regard). No decent water on the course. There are 5-6 drinking fountains on the course, but water flow was very poor. The single Marshall did have cold water available but only saw him twice during the 5hr 20 minute round. Cherry Island is a good layout but not very well maintained at all! While my group only plays 5-6 rounds a year at this course, the consensus is that we can play better maintained courses for similar cost at a dozen better courses in the future. That is what we will do and I recommend other serious golfers do the same. The starter indicated that Cherry Island only have about 80 members in their golf club and I can understand why. If things don't improve, I think this course will go the way of Rocklin and Bass Lake golf courses!

Terrible Golf Experience
Booked 1156 tee time, didnt tee off until 1240. Staff gave impression this was normal.
Front 9. Started at 1240, made the turn at 345. (+3h 1/2 round) Most holes had at least 3 groups on each hole. Par 4 7th had 4 groups stacked up, ranger came by to offer water, not encourage anyone to maintain pace of play.....quit after 9 when 3 more groups were stacked up on 10.
Green/Fairway in good condition. Tee boxes looked like a litter box
Also lots of golfers blaring Metallica/Pantera from their golf carts. Nothing wrong with the music, but trying to tee off with 8 other people watching each hole and 1980's metal playing sucks.
Youve been warned. Spend extra couple $$ for teal end, or just go to anci
Tough rough
Too much time spent finding balls in longish rough. You would sometimes have to be right over the ball in order to see it.
Nice course
First time playing this course, it was a very nice course although group ahead of us was really slow and Marshall told them once to pick it up but did not help they played even slower. 5 hour round
Never go back to Cherry Island
I have played Cherry Island a couple of times and the past 2 have been horrible experiences. Yesterday it took us 4 hours to finish 12 holes and we finally called it quits. I called the pro shop after waiting 20 plus minutes on hole 3, 5 and 7 to see if the marshal could speed things up. The marshal came by and said this was as fast we could go. Several times others we talked to complained about how long it was taking. And one other note....no water jugs on the course and it was hot. Only the marshal has a water jug on his cart. Too many other good places to play.
Doglegs at Cherry
Played the course and enjoyed it a lot. This is a shot selection course for sure. I thought the front nine was open and allowed for a few driver shots, but the back nine is where you need to pick your clubs carefully. If your the type of golfer that can bomb the ball and cut across doglegs, trees, and other obstacles than you'll score low. I chose to use my 5 wood on some holes and 4,5,6 irons on the other back nine holes. The trees are mature and the flags are hard to see so I chose the safer play. The fairways were cut, and the greens were fair (a little sanded though). Overall the course gets a 7 out of 10 from me. The green fee couldn't be beat!
Cherry Island
Course is in the best shape I've ever seen it in. Always nice when courses have sand in the traps.
Nice Course
I play Cherry Island a few times per month. Normally we start our round about eight in the morning. Our time this day was 11:04 and there were very few groups on the course but they were very slow players. It took us longer than it should have to complete our round.
For some reason they are eliminating the sand trap on hole number five and reduced the size of the trap on number eight. This makes no sense to me or the staff I asked. I wish they would return hole number 10 to the old par four. That hole had much more personality.
Cherry Island
The course was in good shape and we got done in 4 hrs.
Good coarse
Good conditions, real friendly staff, very good scenery
The course is in Cherry shape
It has been years since I have played Cherry Island. What a shame as it is in fantastic shape. The greens were all fair and true and the course was beautiful. The second cut was pretty brutal as there were times where I had a heck of a time finding my ball. The course plays 6511 from the tips and is a good course for the intermediate golfer. The back nine is where you can do your scoring as it is shorter and you will have the rhythm of the course by then. The 7th is a tough hole as you have water along the right side, but you have to make sure to stay close to the water as the green is across and it is a 160 yard shot a elevated green with traps covering the right front. Yikes....tough hole. Hopefully, I can make it back soon.
Slowest round I have ever played
4 hours to play 9 holes
Groups of 4 and 5 people backed up on every tee box.
Greens in good shape but pace of play was horrendous with no help from the marshals.
I will not be coming back....
