Knollwood Riunds
I play here about 3 times a year. The greens were punched the week before we played and we were able to book a great deal at Knollwood. My buddy and I played for $25 each and we didn’t wait to hit one shot. Usually the pace of play at Knollwood deters me from coming back soon, but I will probably try to play Knollwood a few more times this year if it’s a quiet as it was earlier this week.
Course is in pretty good condition, I would assume the greens have returned to their normal selves by now. If you are looking for a good place to play, try out Knollwood.
Greens just started being aerated
I actually golf here pretty often, on a normal day, it is normal for this course to have a 5 hour+ round. I usually just play 9holes here at twilight or super twilight. I played 3/28/19 and played the whole 18 for the first time in under 5 hours in forever, and it might be because they’re currently aerating all the greens! Some greens they hadn’t even started yet, while others were like a bunker. Besides the pace of play on most days, it’s a difficult course and if you can muster up being ok for a round under 6 hours, it’s a good place to play.
If you value your time, this isn’t the course to play
Reserved on 3/23/19 for sunday 3/24/19 thru golfnow 12:28 Tee time. Checked golfnow again and they seem to have added a Tee time for 12:20 which didn’t appear when i reserved. Arrived on time for 12:28 on 3/24/19, started Teeing at 1:00pm maybe even later. Marshall starter was washing the carts as they arrive from hole 18. When people’s Tee is up, some doesn’t have carts yet. My buddy and I were half way on hole 1 and the rest of our group barely got on to their Cart. Spend 2.5 hrs on front 9. Had to leave from Hole 14 and finish the day otherwise it would total 6 hours of game. The traffic here is always bad. I may have played here 2 times in 2018 and today, march 2019. Brookside in Pasadena is one that i tried playing and would never return. I Would avoid knollwood from now on. I played most in Ventura County, for the money and time, it never disappoints.
Pace
Played this course a handful of times and every time I decide to go back I immediately remember why I avoid it. Fivesomes and double stacked tee boxes. 30 minutes per hole. Unless you feel like spending 7+ hours playing golf (mostly waiting) I would avoid this course.
Knollwood
Recent rain in the area made the cross a little soggy, but the grounds crew was all over the place!
Sand traps wet, but that was to be expected.
Overall B-
Poor Service
The course was great, but the service was horrible. We encountered extremely rude golfers who were throwing golf balls by our feet. We called for the marshalls since we did not see them make their rounds. The marshalls did not show up at all, and the other players behind us continued to harrass us. The workers at the course were also rude (the starter in particular). I did not feel comfortable at all playing in this course because of this and did not enjoy it as much as I could have.
Really fun little course...but it’s a muni
Great playing conditions and layout. Some really challenging holes, especially the first three. It’s an LA county course, so they have to allow five some, which is ridiculous and really impacts pace of play. I avoid weekend play and try to play when conditions aren’t optimal, like when it rains, on holidays (they are always open), or when it’s hot. Rates are really reasonable and the food is pretty good. Staff is very service oriented. I am in the player’s club which is a pretty good deal. They practically give away the golf for free.
6 hr round
Unfriendly starter. Very very slow pace. We finally quit on hole 11 after over 3 hours as 4 groups were waiting to t off.
Called starter and his response ‘well you wouldn’t have finished anyway!!!
Pity great layout and we like course but will never play here again.
Assistant Manager Scams for Money
Went out to play a round with a group of friends on thanksgiving morning and had a very unpleasant experience. This review is my opinion on the service I was presented. They had a special discount on thanksgiving that gave players a free lunch (this discount was not advertised) , I, myself, am an active players club member. This discount supposedly didn’t apply to me. After going into the pro shop to ask the assistant manager why I don’t get a discount when I’m paying a membership on the course he went on to say that the workers aren’t supposed to even tell people about the discount so that the shop can make more money. Then, seeing how this assistant manager had no care for loyal customers I asked if he cares more about recurring customers rather than money and he went on to say he cares more about bringing in money by not telling customers about deals or discounts happening. This shocked me, as I live on the course and grew up here and now I know it’s run by people who have no care for loyal customers. He went on to say “it’s his business”, fair enough , if you care about profits more than your customers, go ahead and scam people by not telling them about deals and discounts. To know that this assistant manager , was doing this on thanksgiving is even more bothersome. Bad experience and rude assistant manager , definitely will be worth an extra drive just to have a better golf experience somewhere else.
Worst pace of play ever
I do not understand why American Golf facilities allow 5-somes to go out. Completely ruins pace of play.
Fun picturesque layout. Managerally abused by American Golf.
I love this layout. The conditions are better than most public courses in LA. It was recentily punched, which I accept as an important part of course maintenance, but they left the bunkers ungroomed so they were terrible. My biggest complaint is Knollwood (American Golf) allows fivesomes! We had to play through two fivesomes (all of whom were riding) and one gave us grief just for asking. Course marshall admitted to me what I already guessed, that Am. Golf is putting profits over quality of play by allowing fivesomes. I may not go back to Knollwood. My friends and I were very frustrated with the constant wait, AND WE WERE WALKING!
If you like it slow, this is the place to go.
Have played this course for years but in the last several the play has become increasingly slower. This last round will be my last at this course. We left after 9 holes as it took close to 3 hours to play. I never understood letting 5-somes out but if you are going to continue this practice, it may be a good idea to at least make sure it is a 5-some with decent handicaps and are committed to keeping up with the pace of play. (The 5some in front of us had a combined age of 400 and a combined handicap of 150.) In addition, they have had issues with honoring tee times as they are always running behind. We went off 20 minutes late and this was not the first time. Taking a reservation is easy, keeping the reservation is the important part. On a positive note the course and greens were in good shape (at least on the front nine) and the price is one of the more affordable around but you better commit your whole day if you are going to play there.
Great City Course
Played at 0620 with a friend and two singles. Got out early and played behind two foursomes and got the round done in 3 hours 40 minutes. Having played Tierra Rejada last week and seeing the dry conditions their I was surprised at how green and manicured Knollwood is right now. Course is in great shape, tees, fairways, greens and traps, not perfect, but very good. I will definitely be back.
Fourth of July morning
Fourth of July morning! They let a lot of fivesomes out which slows up things. Our group was a hole ahead of the group behind us, never making them wait during the round. And the Marshall drove by us telling us to pick up our pace on the 17th hole that we were a hole behind the group in front of us. Very rude when the group behind us never had to wait, we were aware of it as we were all decent golfers! My suggestion is don’t stop on the ninth hole for food or drinks because the group in front of us didn’t and we were a little bit behind them afterwards! Other than the staff the course is decent and worth playing.
Never Have Played Here , But
After reading the first four reviews. I do not think would want to play here. 5-5 1/2 hours to play a round of gold is just a bit too much for me ...
