Great Course, Awful Pace of Play
The Good:
I really love this course. The layout is great as it threads a neighborhood without feeling like it. Nice mix of holes. One driveable par 4 on the front nine (I think hole 3) and one driveable par 4 on the back (14, I think), The par 3's are all great just DO NOT go long on them. Think one club less from the elevated tees. Compared to other courses in the So Cal area, you probably won't lose as many balls here as most fairways, though not "wide open", are not as narrow as courses such as Debell and most Muni's. Hole 1 and 2 will likely set you back a few strokes early but don't get discouraged these are tough holes from the back tees. They are very uphill the whole way and feel about 100 yards longer than what the scorecard indicates. It seems like the design of this course favors long hitters that might not score on par 5's but then get great looks at short par 4's and mid-iron par 3's. Beautiful finishing hole that gives you a great chance at Birdie on your way out. Overall this course is an Excellent value for less than $50.
The Bad:
Pace of play here is awful. Just awful. Think Brookside in Pasadena but a little worse. In fact, the pace of EVERYTHING here is awful. From check-in, to "grabbing a hot dog", to playing the course... it is all slow. I've played here 6 times and only been able to finish 3 of those rounds. I will not book a round that begins after 12pm here. Fivesomes. Lots of them. I've never even seen a Marshall on this course and I mostly play on the weekends. It's hard to get into your game if you (literally, we timed this) have to wait 18 mins between holes and then another 10 mins before making your approach. Not kidding, 20-25 minutes to play each hole. Who has time for a 7-8hr round of golf? I wish more golfers would play ready golf, and that everyone would just finish putting out on the green instead of marking their balls when they are within 3 feet.
Again, this course is great and plays great. Be the first group on the tee on a weekday and you'll love your round!
course is average , no marshall to control the pace of play.
average course, price was average, course of play was slow, no marshall to control the game.
Nightmare round
First we got there 1 1/2 early for a 10:22 tee time, we were told we cold not check in for 20 minutes, then an additional 20 minutes went by before we we were called to check in, it took us 1 1/2 hrs to play 4 holes & 4hrs to play 12 holes at when we decided to call it quits. Upon returning our cart I left my phone in the drivers side storage space & drove home, after 1 hour I realized I had forgotten my phone called the course and the guy told me yes they found a phone but it was given back to the owner already, so I got into my car drove back to the course where I spoke to the cart guy and yes it was my pone out of my cart # that he had given to some guy that was standing in the parking lot. Yikes, as of 12/15 no word of my phone!! Thanks, Knollwood CC.
Not coming back
First of all, you need to make sure if you are using a 3rd party booking site, like golfnow, that you do not allow 15 people to book the same tee time. And when people get to the course and find this out, you need to be a little more informative and helpful instead of making people wait over 40 minutes to tee off. Also having enough carts for people who booked needing a cart would be helpful. Also having a marshall on the course to increase pace of play would be nice. Finally, STOP ALLOWING FIVESOMES on the course. Definetly not coming back to this course. I will spend my money elsewhere.
Great Course but...
This was a fun course to play, it reminded me of an old school Private Only Course. Beautiful course in great condition all the way around, with tree line fairways and fast greens. Coming from Vegas desert golf this little gem secluded in the hills and valley of Grenada Hills was an exciting change of scenery and play. I will forewarn that the pace of play was almost unbearable.... Maybe it was because we we're behind a walking foursome and it felt like we had to wait on every shot until we'd get on the green on every hole... Keep in mind this was an early Sunday morning in mid Sept.
I'm done
I think this was the last time I play Knollwood. Too many people and on every hole wait time was 10 minutes or longer. We left after the 11th hole and that took us 3 1/2 hrs. The new name for Knollwood is SLOWwood.
Nice golf course!
A very nice day at a very nice course! The bunkers are in good shape as I seemed to visit them often! Good and a little tough!
Great job by the Knollwood staff on a rainy day!
Has the 8:12 GN for 4 - miserable weather - on and off hard rain...was given the option to call it quits, which I appreciated...we went out there and the course was in great shape, considering the drought...greens excellent! A few bare spots in the fairway but all white chalk outlined for a drop...bar cart girl super cute and bubbly and took credit cards...we avoid the coffee shop as it is overpriced and only average...nice proshop - good sale on shoes going on...covered range...overall 5 stars...
Don't get greedy
The course, staff are goid. Only problem is cramming in too many tee times, causing EXCESSIVE S L O W PLAY.
great course no duck poo
one of best courses i have been on each hole is challenging course is well maintain it was my first time i`ll be back next week jeff
Nice day
Nice day, pace slowed down at the 7th hole... Did recover some at the turn
Great course, needs some work.
The lay out and adventurous course are fun! The hills and tree placements, the bunkers and the distances make this course very challenging. However, the surly staff and waitresses that don't want to be there are cause for concern. We came on a day that it had just rained. Got there an hour ealry to hit balls. Driving range was closed due to the rain? I'm from Seattle, if you closed your range for rain, you'd go out of business! Poor excuse. Price was ok. But it took us 5 1/2 hours to play. Way too many people on the course. I've never written a review before because I usually try and stay optimistic, that maybe they just had an off day. But it really was not a good time. Luckily our group kept it light and fun but overall not a good day. Will not go back. Good luck.
Pace of time is worst
Have played afternoon but pace of play was around 6:30 mins.... we had to wait every hole. Not worth to play at this course. I have to leave after we play 9 hole due to slow pace. Called proshop see if we can play quicker but they said it is what it is... nothing they cannot do. Will never play this course again in my life!
Abysmal Pace of Play outweighs a Good Deal and the Staff Agrees!
I played with one other friend, teeing off around noon on this day. This was my second time on this course and an email special brought me in. $46.95 for 18 holes, cart included, lunch included, one drink included. Great deal.
We get sent off as a two-some, behind a five-some. The five-some ended up being the least of our problems because the entire course was at a crawl. It took 1 hour to play 2 holes. The third tee-box was backed up, 3 groups deep. The threesome behind us called it quits right then and there and my friend and I called the pro-shop and asked for the Marshal to be sent out. It took another hour to play 2 more holes....at which point we again called the pro-shop asking...practically begging...to get someone on this pace of play issue.
Things did not improve. As we continued to play awful golf (can't stay loose with 20 minutes between shots) we eventually ran into the marshal. We asked him if there was any hope of things freeing up ahead. He replied "Nope". We asked if he had spoken with any groups...."Nope". We asked if there was any solution to this and he said "Don't play here on the weekends". So not only was he not helpful in the least, his solution was to not return.
We made the turn, hoping against all odds that it may open up. Nope, 3 groups waiting on #10. We finished the 13th hole when we decided that we just could not take it anymore....it had been 5 hours. Let me repeat that....it took us 5 hours to play 13 holes. As we drove back in, passing groups behind us, we passed a group of 6 playing together.
I went into the Pro-shop and had a discussion with the gentleman behind the counter. He provided a little more color....for example there had been a tournament earlier in the day where everyone took an hour lunch against the advice of the staff.....but he also told me that he would advise that we not play at this course unless we wanted to go out very early on the weekdays, but certainly never to play there on the weekends. "I work here and I would never play here" he said.
He informed me that the company that owns this golf course (the name escapes me) forces them to book five-somes and sometimes only spaces out the online tee-times by TWO MINUTES. This tells me that this course is being used solely as a money-grab and does not care about player experience. The Pro-shop gave me a 9-hole credit for my trouble.
So...the good thing about this was the deal. Lunch, a beer, and 18 holes for under $50 sounds great...and would be in most scenarios, however the lack of respect for golfers and the outrageous pace of play far outweighs this deal and made this, by far, the worst golf experience that I have ever had.
I will be taking the advice of the course Marshal as well as the advice of their pro-shop staff....two employees of this golf course....and will not be returning. I also urge all golfers who care about pace of play and about having an enjoyable golf experience, to do the same. There are several other golf courses in the area that do not have this problem and treat their players with better respect.
early riser
I'm a crack of dawn golfer. I love being 1st or 2nd off.
knollwood fits right in.
They will give you a tee time an hour before light if you want. in fact they will lend you a light up ball.
its kind of fun playing the first hole or two like a video game.
On a whole this is a fun, mature coarse. a lot of elevation change, right and left dog legs.
the greens are in great shape.
last minute golf made it easy to get a tee time the afternoon before. (late afternoon)
Decent Course Super Slow Weekend Play
Played yesterday ... Sunday at 8:20. Teed off approx 8:40. Finished 1:30 pm. Round was super slow. We were put behind a 5 some. A lot of weekend golfers here hav no idea how to play ready golf and will all watch each other hit before going to their balls. They take practice swings and survey putts like they are Jordan Spieth. The marshals really need to be more attentive to this and tee times need to be more spread out. Very frustrating.
Some things never change
Knollwood is a great values for the money. The staff is friendly and the course is in good condition.
The only issue I have is they run a lot of five somes so pace of play can be slow even during the week. Expect a 4.5-5 Hour Round. Not good if u r in a hurry, but who should b in a hurry.
Great pace
The course was above average. Had to play conservative because of narrowness of course. The hills however made a poor shot into a playable one, as it brought my ball down, sometimes down the fairway. I don't know what was happening on the 10th fairway but they should have warned us that construction was going on. Otherwise the course was good. Start at 3:05 and finished before 7:15.
Knollwood from Bill
Course is in really nice shape.
