Challenging & peculiar
Played here for the first time with my son (his 40th birthday present), Driving range is two-tiered (mats only) and IRONS only. Ball machine on lower level hidden from view.
Most fairways were lush as was the 1st cut of rough. Lots of places to lose balls.
Tee boxes were lush and not divot-marked. There were a few where a level stance was almost impossible
Greens were fast and did not hold well (freshly sanded). Narrow fairways and narrow gaps to aim your tee shots. Many of greens were tapered on the skirt and the balls rolled right off the putting surface.
My son thinks that the track should be changed to make 10-18, 1-9 and vice versa. Hole #1 is the toughest hole on the course. Seems that #10 would be a better introduction to the course and the back a better way to start your round before facing a very tough front nine.
Good value on GN that included lunch (choice of deli sandwich, breakfast burrito or hot dog, non premium drink and chips.
Staff at the pro shop were okay, but seemed a little distracted. Starter was confused when we didn't show up with a cart key.
Pace of play was 5 hours. At times there were three foursome sitting at the same tee waiting. The threesome ahead of us had lunch at the turn, so we skipped passed them and finished about 15 minutes ahead of the pace of play.
Never play this course!!!
Sorry this a long review but this course should not be played by anyone that wants to enjoy a round of golf. This course cannot seem to get its act together and after the poor management support due to the ill mannered 10 man group in front of us, we not only couldn't enjoy our round it felt entirely unsafe from the 6th hole until around the 14th. Because this course allows for groups of 5, a group booked back to back for 10 and then there was a gap of two or three starts for another 3 people. They tried to consolidate their group, but the starter refused and kept everyone in their assigned booking. The 3 people were so angry about not being able to join their group they left. When we caught up to the group around the 6th hole, we went up to apologize and let them know we had no control over the start problem and we never complained (we were just sitting in our cart watching the drama but didn't dare get involved - it was VERY heated and contentious). Anyway, our apology wasn't allowed, and they blamed US for stopping the group from playing together, which we wouldn't have cared. They were very aggressive towards us from that point, where the 10 would all tee off together and putt out together, virtually slowing things to a crawl. They wanted to punish us for something we had no control over, had they just tee'd off I'm sure we could have shifted around out on the course, but we can't control the starter. After the turn the troublemakers eventually slowly dropped out and the group whittled down from 10 to 5 by around the 14th (I guess they couldn't handle their own slow pace!). We had complained to the management at the turn, but NOBODY came out to talk to anyone. Because of their aggressive push back when we wanted to apologize, we had no desire to engage them further since they were not nice. We weren't going to be bullied off a golf course so we played to finish, but it made for a very unpleasant day with alot of stress. When I complained to the manager he offered a free round but I wanted my money back!!! This course was already being tested to see if the pace would be decent and all this other drama added in, why would I come back even for free? I called to request a refund afterwards since nothing happened from my first request, and have still not seen a refund or heard back from the manager after leaving a voicemail. I will never play this course again, will discourage ANYONE from playing here especially on weekends (in addition to groups of 5 seems its just full of hacks that don't know what they are doing).r - Balboa/Encino is just down the street and is a much better golf experience in the public courses overall. Whatever you do, don't play here since it will take you 6 hours to play, and if you complain they won't do anything to move things along. If they wonder why they need to beg people to play here, maybe if we all stop they will read some reviews and fix it! Course is way too nice to keep away the better golfers, but you won't find anyone playing here after they play here once, especially on a weekend.
Beautiful layout badly maintained !!!!!!
Round took 6hrs 5 mts , most time ever in the 15 years i have been playing this course , they continue to allow 5 players which is ok , but without a good marshal to keep players moving , this will continue , actually i don't think i even saw a marshal , and the times i have seen them they just drive by anyway, greens were good but fairways were in poor condition considering the rain we had .
WILL NEVER GO BACK!!
Well let me just say if you would like to play a 4 hour round do NOT go there we were in a five some it is not acceptable! the round was FIVE HOURS PLUS just the worst experince some one should loo into this but I guess the money is what is more important... I will let all my friends and family to stay far a way so they don't spend the day out there!!!!!!!
Course was in pretty good shape but the greens were very slow and bumpy
Had a good time and shot a decent round and will return again
Got a good deal on golf now and it was a beautiful afternoon
Great course but greens were aerated
I like this course so I booked without spending much time on it but once I got to the course, noticed that the greens were aerated.
I adjusted to it and played but would be great if Golfnow could note it during the booking process in order to prevent the same issue and be able to choose another course if needed.
Overall I had a great experience and luckily played better than my handicap so definitely will come back.
AM
The course was NOT in good shape. The fairways were very thin and the greens had not be mowed in days, very bumpy. Maintenance is lacking.
With all the rain we have had I expected a much more lush and revitalized course.
I live in the area and over the years have played it many times. Very disappointed that it has gone this far down. It has changed management groups but no one seems to want to take GOOD care of a course that could and can be a real money maker.
Very sad day in golf and for golfers.
This course is well maintained
Very nice public course in Los Angeles. It was a little be crowded, but very good overall. The waiting time at each tee box was about 10 extra minutes, for the group in front of us to clear the fairway. The experience with the golf shop personnel was amazing ; we had a problem with the golf car power, and we are assisted immediately. We will recommend this course, but consider that the round of golf will take a little be longer than usual.
Great Course, Awful Pace of Play
The Good:
I really love this course. The layout is great as it threads a neighborhood without feeling like it. Nice mix of holes. One driveable par 4 on the front nine (I think hole 3) and one driveable par 4 on the back (14, I think), The par 3's are all great just DO NOT go long on them. Think one club less from the elevated tees. Compared to other courses in the So Cal area, you probably won't lose as many balls here as most fairways, though not "wide open", are not as narrow as courses such as Debell and most Muni's. Hole 1 and 2 will likely set you back a few strokes early but don't get discouraged these are tough holes from the back tees. They are very uphill the whole way and feel about 100 yards longer than what the scorecard indicates. It seems like the design of this course favors long hitters that might not score on par 5's but then get great looks at short par 4's and mid-iron par 3's. Beautiful finishing hole that gives you a great chance at Birdie on your way out. Overall this course is an Excellent value for less than $50.
The Bad:
Pace of play here is awful. Just awful. Think Brookside in Pasadena but a little worse. In fact, the pace of EVERYTHING here is awful. From check-in, to "grabbing a hot dog", to playing the course... it is all slow. I've played here 6 times and only been able to finish 3 of those rounds. I will not book a round that begins after 12pm here. Fivesomes. Lots of them. I've never even seen a Marshall on this course and I mostly play on the weekends. It's hard to get into your game if you (literally, we timed this) have to wait 18 mins between holes and then another 10 mins before making your approach. Not kidding, 20-25 minutes to play each hole. Who has time for a 7-8hr round of golf? I wish more golfers would play ready golf, and that everyone would just finish putting out on the green instead of marking their balls when they are within 3 feet.
Again, this course is great and plays great. Be the first group on the tee on a weekday and you'll love your round!
course is average , no marshall to control the pace of play.
average course, price was average, course of play was slow, no marshall to control the game.
Nightmare round
First we got there 1 1/2 early for a 10:22 tee time, we were told we cold not check in for 20 minutes, then an additional 20 minutes went by before we we were called to check in, it took us 1 1/2 hrs to play 4 holes & 4hrs to play 12 holes at when we decided to call it quits. Upon returning our cart I left my phone in the drivers side storage space & drove home, after 1 hour I realized I had forgotten my phone called the course and the guy told me yes they found a phone but it was given back to the owner already, so I got into my car drove back to the course where I spoke to the cart guy and yes it was my pone out of my cart # that he had given to some guy that was standing in the parking lot. Yikes, as of 12/15 no word of my phone!! Thanks, Knollwood CC.
Not coming back
First of all, you need to make sure if you are using a 3rd party booking site, like golfnow, that you do not allow 15 people to book the same tee time. And when people get to the course and find this out, you need to be a little more informative and helpful instead of making people wait over 40 minutes to tee off. Also having enough carts for people who booked needing a cart would be helpful. Also having a marshall on the course to increase pace of play would be nice. Finally, STOP ALLOWING FIVESOMES on the course. Definetly not coming back to this course. I will spend my money elsewhere.
Great Course but...
This was a fun course to play, it reminded me of an old school Private Only Course. Beautiful course in great condition all the way around, with tree line fairways and fast greens. Coming from Vegas desert golf this little gem secluded in the hills and valley of Grenada Hills was an exciting change of scenery and play. I will forewarn that the pace of play was almost unbearable.... Maybe it was because we we're behind a walking foursome and it felt like we had to wait on every shot until we'd get on the green on every hole... Keep in mind this was an early Sunday morning in mid Sept.
I'm done
I think this was the last time I play Knollwood. Too many people and on every hole wait time was 10 minutes or longer. We left after the 11th hole and that took us 3 1/2 hrs. The new name for Knollwood is SLOWwood.
