Good deal at a good price
This was the 2nd time I played at Knollwood. (The first time was in Oct 2013 when a bear decided to go for a walk on the course). My brother & I are novice golfesr and we were paired up with a group of older, more experienced guys. Around the 5th-6th hole we were asked to speed things up. We did and didn't see the group behind us until the 10th hole. There was a traffic jam at the 10th hole with 3 groups in front of us. After waiting patiently for 10-15 minutes we tee'd off. By this time the group behind us caught up, along with 2-3 other groups. Overall the day was fun and we had great weather - the only downside being the traffic.
Great Monday Golf
Scored a $40 dollar Rate including cart on Golfnow. Got their early and were able to tee off whenever we were ready. They were preparing a small 14 women tournament. So we tee'd off at around 8:20am. The course was wide open, we played at our own pace with no pressure. Course was in pretty good condition. They also had a Special for $10 bucks at the course where you could choose any 2 out of 3. (Bucket of range balls, Hotdog/chip/coke, Sleeve of Nike P/D balls). So that was a no brainer that my whole group bought. Hit the turn and got our Hotdogs and chips. Finished up at around 12:45. Had a cold beer and called it a Day. Great Round, Great Bargain.
Snail's PAce
Played Knollwood with a buddy on Friday booked through golfnow. 10:37 tee time was pushed back and didn't get to tee off until 10:55 due to starter putting a 5- some group of friends ahead of the lady 5- some in front of us. That group didn't have a tee time, and so we waited and waited and waited. after 3 hours and 15 minutes we completed 9 holes and quit after complaining to their GM.
finally got to play
I've tried 4 times total to get on this course with success on the 4th. Management has obviously been doing some house cleaning. It was very nice to finally be able to play without having to pay "extra" to have your name called. Kudos for cleaning up. We were a four-ball and all agreed we would come back again.
Slow-wood
If it wasn't for the pace of play, I would play this course a lot more. The groupings are done in 5's and there always seems to be a lot of walkers. The average rounds here is 6 hours. We weren't even able to finish our round, the wait always seems to get unplayable on the back nine. This course will continue to be last on the list of courses around our area for a pleasant round. Play Robinson ranch!
We are sorry to hear that you have had poor experiences at Knollwood. We are aware of the slow play on the course and it is our top priority to fix. 5'somes are a county policy and all county courses allow them, however we plan to make all necessary changes to improve pace. We hope to see you out here again soon.
Not Worth It
Stuck behind a two groups of 5, a group of 6 (yes, 6) it took 2.5hrs to get to the 5th box. Called the club house with no resolve and no marshal. Stopped in after the 9th and was offered a voucher for another day but just left. Will not be returning to this course again.
Fairways were patchy and hard. Greens were good.
The only positive was the bar/restaurant staff.
We are sorry to hear about this experience. A group of 6 is unacceptable and we have had meetings with all our marshalls to make sure their prescence is felt more often, and to ensure these things do not happen. 5'somes are a county policy and we are required to allow them but we are doing everything necessary to improve our pace of play. It is our top priority. Things are already starting to improve, but the process is ongoing and changes are being made. We hope to see you again soon.
Nice course if you have Forever
Knollwood is kind of like being in bumper to bumper traffic. Your always waiting for the traffic to open up. The course is nice, but when I played at every tee box there was 3 carts waiting. The management sends out the groups too close together so it's just a few holes before the traffic jam starts. I started at 12 noon and barely finished. In fact it was too dark to see on the 18th hole. Want a tip? Get there before 11am if you want to finish! Just too many people there.
Pace of play
This was the 3rd time I have played Knollwood. I have come to expect that the pace of play is on the slower side so a 5-5.5 hour round of golf on the weekend was expected. Of course I expected to finish 18 holes if I'm on the course for that long.
We booked our tee time for around 11:30am thinking we could finish 18. We tee'd off about 20 minutes after our booked tee time. There was some sort of tournament or something that tee'd off before us and the pace of play was so slow. It took our 4 some 4 hours to finish 9 holes. By the time the sun was setting around 5:30 we were only on hole 12.
The worst thing about that was a group behind us hit up on us in the middle of the fairway yelling at us to speed it up?!? We were at the mercy of ALL of the groups that were ahead of us so there was nothing we could do. That same group then skipped a hole on us trying to play faster. What could we do? I'm not about to get into a brawl with someone but there wasn't a single marshal to be seen the entire 5+ hours we were on the course.
I've never been more thoroughly disappointed in a round of golf before. I can only hope no one else experiences a round like I experienced.
Not On The Weekends
I should have remembered this place was notoriously VERY slow pace of play. I mean, new world record slow. It took us 4 hours to finish the front nine! Thanks right we were headed for an 8 hour round! The pro shop said that the weekdays are a better. The course is not bad but they let too many people on, so it clogs up the pace. The trees can catch a few balls but that is good for a 4:45 round at worst. This is the slowest round I have played (or tried to) ever.
Took way to long
Was on coarse for 4 and 1/2 hrs before we gave up we only finished 13 holes. They let 5somes out and didn't give enough time so it was way backed up. Will never go again
Why do they offer back 9 twilight tee times!?
My buddy and I were having a great afternoon round, and were wayyyy ahead of pace. It was great, we finished the front 9 in under 90 minutes.
But this course has a terrible flaw. They offer back 9 twilight tee times - so when we got to the turn, we were stuck behind 2 3somes and a 4some, and were unable to finish our round before the sun went down!
I simply do not understand why Knollwood does this. Why not offer the twilight rate for the FRONT 9? That way people who've paid to play 18 can actually play 18 holes!
Another downside to this course is that virtually no one fixes their divots on the greens. I don't know where the regulars get the idea that it's ok, but it is certainly not.
The tee boxes and fairways are decently kept, and the drinks are cheap.
I do keep coming back here, but this whole twilight issue in the winter months has really got me rethinking it.
Great course
very challenging and fun to play. Enjoyed playing greens are very well maintained, tough first hole but very fun.
Was expecting better....
I have not played Knollwood in a year primarily due to pace of play and the course not caring about it. Reading recent reviews I was hoping things had gotten better however they haven't. They send out a lot of walking 5-somes! We waited on EVERY shot. Our tee-time was 7:48 on Saturday and we finished at 1:00. After booking the time I called the course to see if the greens were punched, they said 3wks ago and they are "pretty much back", front 9 greens were bad and not just from punching, a lot of dead spaces in addition the plugs had grown back higher than the green height and had not been mowed, they looked like someone having hair plugs in their head! Overall course was not in great shape, fairways were JUST punch (they didnt tell me that on the phone), and not much grass there. Bunkers in poor shape. Pretty typical American Golf Course, they will let the course play as bad as possible (time and condition) as long as people come out to play. It will probably be another year before I play again at which point I will forget how much I hate playing there and book it anyway. Much prefer Camarillo Springs, Simi Hills, Elkins Ranch for similar money. I really wish people would stop playing courses like Knollwood until management lears a few lessons
hills left and right drives 560y par five
the perfect day of golf i had drives of 300yds conditions couldnt of been better
fair price good course
I just played here last week green getting bumpy and couple player ahead of us was too slow
Needs attention from maintenance.
The fairways are full of unattended divotsmand also the greens. I wonder if the marshalls could help cover these whilebthey go around practically not doing anything. A beautiful course going to waste due to its lack of maintenance.
Hardest opening hole in the Los Angeles County
This is an awesome place to play and I look forward to going back. The staff was super friendly even though there was an issue with the tee time. The pro shop staff was overly friendly giving us awesome customer service. We saw the marshal drive by 4 times checking on pace of play, and we finished our round at the perfect pace. The grass is short, so the ball rolls and many elevated tee boxes giving way to bombed drives. A few birdie opportunity holes with challenging par 3's. Even the Hot Dog at the turn was a great price and super tasty. I'm in love with this hidden gem tucked away among homes and thick old trees. Knollwood is by far the best value for the money and a course that has its defenses in full effect waiting for you to have a miss hit. Lots of birds, deer, squirrels, and rabbits giving the course the feel of a nature walk with golf clubs. Hole 9 your hitting to a super elevated green and if you miss right it will take you two shots to get back up the hill making for awesome risk reward. This course can easily be walked even in the hot heat, but I had a cart which I recommend. I even got lucky and played with a guy from the mens club and he was greatest guy I had randomly played with in forever. I'm going to join the mens club because of it. He said they play one Sunday a month and I will be coming back way more than that now.
Not great, but not terrible.
I've been golfing for a very short time (3 months) at the urging of my friends to join them on the weekends. 8-18-13 was the second time playing Knollwood, with the previous weekend being the first time. Mind you, I haven't played very many courses so don't have a lot to compare it to. Most of my time has been spent at Van Nuys or Woodley, which aren't all that great comparatively.
I like the course set up here. The hills and angles on fairways making it quite challenging for a player like myself. Bunkers are a little crusty which makes for some odd shots. Biggest complaint is the state of the greens. So inconsistent from hole to hole and it's clear that very few patrons fix their divots. The greens are extremely dry and in rough shape. Other wise, this place is pretty cool and I'd definitely consider going again.
Golf Now prices make it worthwhile as it's a huge discount.
Really Challenging and Fun Sunday
This course is just great! It's a good challenge for any mid-high handicapper. The staff was fantastic and friendly (not the Marshall, though - just kidding!
Our round went along at a normal weekend pace for So. California. I'm really surprised to read reviews complaining about pace of play - it's the norm around here. It's the Marshall's job to make sure play is moving along and they do a really great job at it. No complaints here.
If you keep it straight, you can score low, but that's the story about anywhere.
I'd love to come back and play here again sometime soon. I'm sure I'll do better here next time since this was only my second time playing here. Will be a bit more confident and be able to trust my game a bit more.
Come here with a good short game and you'll make up for any mistakes off the tee as long as you keep your ball in play.
We are sorry to hear about this poor experience. You can be assured that we have spoken to all our starters and marshalls about these types of reviews, and to make sure they do not happen again. We are currently making a lot of changes at Knollwood to improve our pace of play, we hope to see you again with a different result.
