This course should be closed
This is the worse conditioned course ever. The person that works there said it is for sale and has not been watered or overseeded for three years and it looks like that is very true. This course should be removed from your list because if i ever play another in these bad conditions i will immediately quit using Golf Now
Horrible. If you can even find grass it is all dried up.
The fairways were so dried up and lacking grass that I have never seen anything like it, the greens were acceptable for the most part. The tee boxes were pretty much the same. The traps and there are lots of them all needed maintenance. There is no marshal so a person sneaked onto the course between us and group in front and then proceeded to play two plays (badly I might add). I told them in the pro shop after finishing and were concerned.
Great value, fast "greens"
I live in Ahwatukee and I'm a "hack" golfer. I golfed here for the extreme value. The fairways are dry, but the greens were in good shape and the course was quite busy on a Monday afternoon. I golfed solo and had an opportunity to speak with a number of groups out golfing this day, I heard no complaints. Everyone was out having fun. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Much of what you read on the course conditions is true,.... but I found maintenance workers out picking up debris and the course was fine to my way of thinking. South Mountain in the background, the lakes, and the palm trees make for nice background scenery. For the price you pay, the value is hard to beat. I look forward to playing here again.
Very inexpensive, but poorly maintained.
Bridges feel like they will collapse. Some greens are completely covered in duck feces. Lots of sand traps and water make the course fairly challenging. Would be much better if they repaired the bridges, cleaned up the greens once in a while and leveled the tee boxes a bit.
Good price, course needs a lot of attention.
I like the course to practice your short game. I got a great price for 18 holes and a cart. The course needed a lot of attention. Greens and traps weren't bad but the fairways were pretty bad. I would recommend this course to beginners or people who just wanted to play a quick game at a good price.
Lots of water on the front.
Right now February, the grass is dormant. The fairways are playing long with no live grass to hold the ball. Greens are firm and do not hold the ball. I've played this course spring through fall when conditions are better and it is a great short course.
the course has some problems
Fairways are rough / One bathroom facility on the back nine was flooded, tank was leaking / none of the ball washers had water in them / the putting green was covered with wind blown palm tree clippings
Very bad course, in bad shape.
I played a lot of courses in the area and this was the worst. The courses in the area had grass this one only had green grass on the greens. The personnel was friendly but the course needs improvement.
First time to play this executive course & it needs attention. The greens were ok; fairways were bleak dirt in many places.
The fairways were very, very hard to determine in many places. Especially for an executive course we were very often playing in sandy dirt in the middle of a fairway.
Time to sell the property.
First of all, please change the photo and the description of this golf course. The only accurate aspect of the photo is the blue sky. And "top ten executive courses in the country"??? That cannot be true, unless of course there are only 10 executive courses in the country.
The Lakes was the first course I had ever played on as a teenager and it was a great learner's course. I took my son to play there as well about 6 years ago. Again, a great course to learn on. Now is a totally different story, unless you want to learn how to hit off of hard packed dirt (fairways) and putt on glass (greens). I understand overseeding only the tee boxes and greens on an executive course, but what about the par 4's? Nothing but dormant grass (if you can call it that) and dirt. The course is usually a nice easy, make you feel good about your game type of course, but the current conditions make it challenging, but not in a good way. If you miss the green, forget about it. The rough is smooth, and the bunkers are hard packed dirt with a quarter inch of sand on top. The lakes have receded and are disgusting to look at and the aquatic birds have made a toilet of most of the surrounding greens.
The staff was very friendly however, at least the three that were there. Front desk, Cart attendant, and beverage cart server. We saw the beverage cart twice on the first nine and were told she was going home for the day. We finished the whole 18 with plenty of daylight, it would have been nice if she did too.
Right after teeing off on number 1, our cart died, understandable, it happens, the cart attendant arrived quickly after getting through on the phone to the pro shop. Approximately 10 attempts with busy signals before getting an answer. The cart attendant was very apologetic about the situation.
We had to wait to tee off on three separate holes due to high school kids cutting through the course after school. One couple of students had to stop on the cart path at #3 and proceed to make out in front of everybody, forcing us to drive around them. In the middle of #3, we had to wait for apartment residents who were out feeding the ducks to get their two dogs away from us so we could hit. I felt like we were two golfers getting in the way of people trying to enjoy their park, shame on us. And finally, on #8, as we drove to our second shots, my fiance and I got a nice view of another golfer off to the side of the #7 tee box urinating into the lake. Now that's not the course's fault, but that is the type of golfer (term used loosely) this course now attracts. And you too can experience all of this for only $19.00 per person!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've read in the news the possibility of the owner of this course selling half of the property to an apartment builder. If it means putting the rest of the money into making a nice 9-hole course, I say sell sell sell.
But until then, I will not be back.
Really poor shape for a used to be good course
This used to be a half decent executive track. Not any more. This was prime season and the course was absolutely horrible. No over seeding of the fairways, the tee boxes are mounded so it was hard to find a level spot to tee off from. The course has a nice layout but the conditions make it not worth it. It's a shame because this used to be a pretty fun course.
Moderately challenging executive course
Friendly staff and tee time was on time. Greens were a little slow and fairways quite brown but had an enjoyable time.
Worst golf course I ever played.
The course was in bad shape. The fairways were hard and hardly no grass. many of the greens had duck dropping. It was just awful. It wasn't a good experience.
Great course, if you know where the water is!
This golf course is quite a challenge. It lives up to it's name, "The Lakes". If you are a first time player of this course, plan to lose several golf balls, as there is "hidden" water in front of the greens on several holes, which will cause increased scores, even with "good" shots.
I thoroughly enjoyed playing this course!
Not even worth $19 a round
Obvious they don't put any $$$ into maintaining the course. They had no one working in the kitchen selling coffee or anything, and acted like I was bothering him when I asked (took him away from reading his Golf Digest magazine). The staff, especially TJ, need to take a lesson in basic customer service. I've played there in the past, but no more. There are much better alternative executive courses, with people who know how to treat their customers.
it was ok
could have been a lot better greens were covered in duck droppings and leaves if you play this course carry a broom for the greens before you put.
Not green
Ive played this course many times over the years and I hate to say this but ive never seen it in this bad of shape before. Besides the greens and tee boxes there is no other green grass on the whole course. The fair ways are all dead and brown grass with dirt oatches in them. Quite disapointing but i do like the course.
Very bad condition.
One the worst courses I have ever played. Terrible fairways.. Didn't hit off grass all day other than a few tee boxes.
Couldn't agree more with this review. Great price, course needs some attention, however it is a great course for beginners or casual golfers and a good place work on your short game.
