Ken McDonald Golf Course
About
Located in the metropolitan Phoenix area, the affordably priced Ken McDonald Golf Course is a championship-length course that is suitable for any level of golfer. The flat terrain of the course makes for an enjoyable stroll, while the water hazards that come into play on eight holes provide plenty of challenge. The water hazards are provided by the Western Canal, which flows directly through the golf course. The par-5 11th hole is the longest on the course at 570 yards; it is very difficult to reach in two shots. In addition to the course, Ken McDonald Golf Course offers several other amenities including a restaurant, club fitting and repairs, and professional golf instruction.

Slow Play and Rough Course Conditions
My experience at Ken McDonald Golf Course was disappointing.
We had a 5:25 PM tee time and arrived to find an extremely long check-in line, with roughly 25–30 people waiting. The staff interactions throughout our visit were not particularly welcoming or friendly, which didn’t create a great first impression.
The course conditions were also poor. Large portions appeared to be under construction, with exposed pipes, wires, muddy areas, and generally rough conditions throughout the course. For the price paid, I expected much better maintenance.
The biggest issue was pace of play. The course was extremely crowded, and we spent what felt like 15–20 minutes waiting on nearly every hole. Nine holes took far longer than they should have, making the round frustrating rather than enjoyable.
Overall, between the crowded conditions, slow pace of play, course maintenance issues, and customer service experience, I did not feel the value matched the cost. There are several other courses in the area where I would choose to play before returning.
Honest review
Pace of place was excellent for a Saturday afternoon. The course is pretty open with some water hazards and out of bounds. Course from the tips is about 6800 which is decent and the fairways for the most part aren’t all dried up with dirt patches. My only complaint are the bunkers. You have about 1/8 inch of sand before you hit concrete which I know… don’t hit in the bunker but the bunkers are a part of the game in my opinion. Fix the bunkers and this is a great course for the price.
Kenny Mac needs work
A horrific storm ran through Kenny Mac about a year ago. Literally hundreds of trees got knocked down by high winds. Fast-forward a year and there still is a ton of debris and unplayable lies all over the golf course because of branches and junk laying around. The City of Tempe needs to step up, not only to clean up this mess, but hundreds of small trees need to be planted to replace the ones that are no longer here.
Typically Kenny Mac
Greens were typical - read a break but the ball goes straight. Fairways were moderate, some bare or mud spots in middle after good tee shots.
Not in great shape
I think this was the worst shape I’ve ever seen the course. Having piles of cut up downed trees everywhere certainly didn’t help. Greens were ok and fairways were playable… everywhere else was terrible. Looks like they are in a drought and nothing has been watered properly.
Golf Review
Honestly, the course is in shambles. They tree issue, the sand, practice, carts, just everything. Would be great if you could recreate Dobson. It’s been a good value but I don’t see it anymore in its current state.
Who Needs Grass?
This course was beat up. Similar to the driving range, the fairways also lacked grass. Downed trees and other elements that shouldn’t be on the course had clearly been left for a long time.
Worst value ever. This course should charge no more than $30.
I played Las Colinas for the same price the day before, and this course wasn’t comparable.
6+ hour pace of play
Terrible pace of play. Almost 4 hours to play through 9. I left early and I want a refund. They need a Marshall to manage pace
Starting to dry out
Not bad 7.5 out of 10 just because little over priced for the condition.Great little track greens were good though.
