Legend Trail Golf Club
About
When the architect Rees Jones created the golf course at the Legend Trail Golf Club, he created a golf course that brings out the Old West-style air of Scottsdale and a fun and testing golf course with greens made of bent grass. It's a premium golf course smack dab in the Sonora Desert.
The golf course at the Legend Trail Golf Club features broad fairways, diminutive bunkering and tees placed on islands, and has been called one of the Top 100 golf courses by Golf Magazine. The magazine also gives Legend Trail 4.5 stars out of five among its
Best Places to Play, and has one of the Top 100 Woman-Friendly Fairways, according to Golf For Women magazine. Panoramas include local sites like Pinnacle Peak, and a round at Legend Trail Golf Club gives all levels of golfer several different shot-making options.
Golf a late-afternoon round on Friday or Saturday, and head back to the Trail's End Grill from 4 to 6 p.m. for specials on drinks and appetizers.

Another Great Hole Photo submitted by mhinkle on 09/23/2012
Very nice course. Excellent pace of play with roaming marshalls to help keep groups on time. Greens are kind of slow but hold approach shots.
Must play course!
Course is in excellent condition. Well maintained, could use more sand in some bunkers. Greens were very, very good! Good pace, hardly any ball marks. Play the correct tees for your game and you will enjoy!
Nice, but not for beginners or real high handicappers
My wife and I played Legend Trail Golf Club and had an overall positive experience. As you drive up to the club house, you will find the normal club drop off area with some nice guys there to get your equipment out of your car and onto a golf cart while you park your car. The club house is a bit small consisting of the pro shop and a restaurant. The guys behind the desk were very helpful and welcoming and got us on our way very quickly. As we exited the pro shop, we found our cart parked just a few steps away adjacent to the putting green. They have an interesting set up for putting with about three different putting areas and another set up for just chipping and sand shots. Just past those areas is a small driving range stocked with balls. After warming up, we talked to the starter who directed us to the first tee box and got us on our way. The overall condition of the course is very good with nice fairways and roughs. The greens were a bit hard for my liking but very playable and rolled true. The front 9 played fairly easy with few surprises or difficult holes. The back 9 is a bit different and more challenging, especially if you have not played the course before. A bit of warning: if your tee shot can’t carry at least 135 to 150 yards, you will need to hit off the women’s tee box or you will be frustrated with a number of the holes. I’m an average golfer and had no problem with any of these holes, but if you have an issue with your driver, either don’t play this course or play the ball forward off the front tee box. The entire course has a lot of contour (especially the back 9) so be prepared for shots that will not be on level ground. A number of the back 9 holes also are heavily trapped, so it is imperative that you fly your shot on to the green. There are plenty of restroom opportunities out on the course so that shouldn’t be a problem for the enlarged prostate crowd. If you hit a half decent ball, you should not have a problem on the course. If not, expect to be searching around in a lot of cactus and brushy areas to find your ball. Hitting off the copper tees, distance is not an issue for the average golfer, but accuracy is. A GPS with a mapping function would be very useful if you want to play this course, because there are a lot of little surprises that you can’t see until you get right on top of them. I was a bit disappointed to discover that the carts don’t have a GPS, so we used our own iPhone based program that saved us a lot of strokes. We played on a Monday and the pace of play was comfortable at about 4 hours and 10 minutes for the round. Overall, I would recommend the course as it offers interesting challenges and plays well for average to better golfers.
Excellent
The course was absolutely pristine from tee to green. We started on time, 12:54 pm. and finished in 3hours 55 minutes. Staff were friendly and it felt like we were on the course by ourselves. Highly recommend.
Worth a trip
Course is a great design, in excellent condition and in a beautiful desert setting. Could use hole layouts on the scorecard or at the tees.
Excellent round
I couldn’t have asked for a better day on the course with my son. Staff friendly & helpful. Course in great shape & challenging for any handicap. Nice place for victory beer after! Enjoy
Great golf at a good price
Has a real desert golf feel and look. Course is very natural and in great condition. Some great views. Enjoyed every minute
Great experience
Course was in great shape, lots of fun. Plenty of challengers and was paired with a couple of legends. Will be going again.
Better Choices
Nothing quite like this one, out in the middle of nowhere & somewhat jammed between houses & desert washes. The tee time/starter is inefficient & appears to take unusual liberties with scheduled tee times. Our confirmed time was tampered with before we even got there, no explanation. Then the new time was not honored because somebody else was running late whom they wanted to fill out the foursome with. Didn’t ask, didn’t inform us, just put another group out in our revised tee time, so we went out over 20’ later. Play lots of golf & no other place pulls that. Similar thing happened last time there- starter seems to have a lot of older friends & seems to stick them in where he feels like it. The course is ok on the front nine- tee boxes & fairways not much better than an ordinary muni. The back nine is something of a maldesign, especially. Holes 11 & 12, amongst others. Lots of forced carries, narrow fairways and odd slopes so that decent drives are sometimes penalized. High handicappers need not even try this course- guys paired with us each must’ve each run through at least a dozen balls & shot 120 or 130. Painful, for $100.00 per. Marshalls harass even though pace decent & not faster because of slow players paired up with. Restaurant is little more than a snack bar. IMO, there are so many better choices around Scottsdale, without the drive, high prices or starter/Marshall nonsense.
Great experience
Course is beautiful and in great shape. Only complaint is that sand in bunkers was too hard. Definitely want to play the course again. GolfNow rate was excellent
Uneven tee boxes
I don't have much bad to say about this course except 2 things that can easily be fixed. The tee boxes are mounded and uneven making it difficult to pick a spot to tee off from. My other complaint is that the driving range has very little tee area so they leave the setup in one spot for way too long. unless your a lefty its very difficult to find a couple of blades of grass to hit off of. Minor things but those are some of the things that make the difference of a good to a great course
My new favorite course!
Great layout, great condition friendly staff- greens were in great condition.
Work needed
Nice layout. Greens need a lot of work with many areas having the ball bounce when putting. Greens need to be rolled and many spots filled in. Also the fairways had way too many digits that were not filled by the golfers.
Lumpy greens - poor condition of bunkers
The staff at this course had no enthusiasm. .. going through the motions.
Greens were lumpy - apparently the rolling machine was not being used. Bunkers were clay with a thin layer of sand...more sand needed. Ranger disappeared at 3:30 pm after encouraging us to keep up with the group ahead. Unfortunately that was not a problem as course was backed up on holes 11 through 17.
Tees and fairway in good condition.
This could be a really good course but the lumpy greens and lack of sand in bunkers made this a mediocre public course. Too bad because the track is really good.
Challenging but fair
Love this golf course. One of the best values in the Scottsdale area.
Put some sand in the bunkers
This is a nice course absent the sand traps. Absolutely could not play out of the bunkers due to lack of sand. Rock hard underneath the roughly 1/4” of dirt (would not call it sand) in the traps. Pace of play was good, greens rolled quick and true. But, oh those horrible sand (dirt) traps.
Great Time.....
Course is in very good shape...really nice......greens rolling true.......staff was great as i showed up a bit late and they got me right onto the tee box with a very nice 2some going out.....pace was perfect....i will be back...
Played Legend Trail for first time in two years - course was in great condition and we got around (as a two-some) in under 4 hours. Looking forward to playing again soon.
