About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in May 2019.
ASU Karsten Golf Course features a Pete and Perry Dye-designed links-style course characterized by design features that challenge, such as Dye's mounding and bunkering - making it important to pick the right golf clubs if you don't want to run up that score. Big-name PGA and LPGA Tour golfers like Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair and Grace Park have all played this course.
ASU Karsten Golf Course offers several holes one could call "signature," such as the short par-4 fourth, the tough par-4 ninth, the daunting par-3 16th (248 yards from the tips) and the challenging par-4 final hole. The water on the left side is the reason this is called one of Arizona's most difficult finishers.
After a round at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, check out the 21,000-square-foot Sun Angel Clubhouse, which tempts players with its Southwestern and American fare in the Trophy Room.

Challenging course
Narrow fairways, a must play course. Well layers out course...interesting!
Not long but difficult
We wanted to play the course that Phil Mickelson played in University and this particular day they had a good price in Golf Now so we played it. It has narrow fairways, lots of undulations, bunkers, and tricky greens. It is very central and hard to believe that a course like this good basically be in the middle of Tempe. It is a Pete Dye design and you need to be good to score well in my opinion. It is definitely a course that requires local knowledge. I can see why ASU has a strong golf team after playing this course.
One of the Best Urban Courses
Unfortunately this course is set for eventual demolition because ASU needs the space, but while it is here it is a wonderful course to play. As you play the course, little tells you that it is set in between other ASU athletic facilities and an APS test facility. The course is as interesting and picturesque as a high-end course. The fairways are sculpted to offer rewards for good shots and penalties for poor shots, without being overly challenging for the regular golfer. At the end of the day, the fairways were all lush and well groomed and the greens were flawless and consistent. I plan to play it many more times before it goes under the dozer.
Avoid rental clubs!
This course was great for the money, right up until they gave me the rental clubs!! $60 for a set, of what looked like 15-20 yr old pings!!! Needless to say I was aghast. I've paid $25 and got a brand new set of Taylor Mades. Very disappointing, I would have thought nothing of it had we been the last ones on the course and that was all they had left, but we had the very first tee time. Other than that the course was well maintained and we had an enjoyable round.
Great course to sharpen skills
Top rated greens and very nice fairways. Needs precise shots to have a good round. For those who are not so accurate better to have some recovering short game skills. I can see how phill is so good at the short game.
fair test
Difficult but fair course with several undulating greens. Overall course condition (given the recent heat ) was very good. Four hour pace so an enjoyable day
A very nice course
Course played fair, did not penalize you too bad for errant shots.
Greens ran fast and true.
Played as a single so i caught up a lot. Managed to turn around and go back and replay hole over again before group behind caught up.
Will definitely play again next time visiting
A real let down
We were all so excited to play the ASU course. Unfortunately, it left a lot to be desired. The overall condition of the course was poor. Nothing was well maintained. The greens were in fairly good shape but really slow. The pace of play was awful at 5 hours and 20 minutes. The staff was friendly other than the cart girl. Needless to say we will not be back.
first and last
Got to the course early staff very friendly come to find out what i reserved on golf now was not available. Had to pay more than quoted. Course overall was very dry sand traps have not been taken care of in a long time. Rocks were bigger than the golf balls. Took over five hours to complete the round. Only good thing about the whole experience
was the friendliness of the staff. Hard to believe the is a championship course
Very technical
Very technical course with many traps, contours and hidden shots. Hard, fast greens but rolled true. Nice setting. This is a course that will strongly favor players with experience and knowledge of the layout. Perfect for a school that wants a huge home course advantage.
Sorry
I was told that the course is going to be demolished to make room for housing and while I completely understand, I'm very sorry to hear that.
This is an awesome, fun course to play and I hope I get another opportunity before it goes away.
karsten asu
Nice course. The greens were smooth and fast, but also hard. Fairways were easy to hit off of. The tee boxes were a little chewed up.
Slow and Slower
This round of golf took 5 hours and 15 minutes. It would also be nicer if people were allowed to get a little closer to the greens in their carts. (Especially for the golfer who is a little older.) The sand traps were not raked and were too "packed."
Good, tough golf course
I was very pleased with the Karsten ASU course. The staff there was very friendly and professional. It's a Pete Dye course; hence, it's pretty difficult. Lots of large mounds and traps right off the fairways. The greens were excellent, receptive and rolled great. The fairways were very good, traps just fine and tee boxes were fair. Many holes were pretty easy but there are several really challenging golf holes. This is a very good test of golf and again, the staff was great.
Good but with issues
Course is very good condition for the most part. Greens were a little hard and dry but fairways were very good.
Bunkers like hitting off brown concrete, borderline unplayable.
Pace of play was horrific. 5.5 hours on a weekday.
Good Course....Service Could Be Better
The course is in good shape. We were glad to have played with regulars who assisted us in getting to know it on our first time out.
The service in the restaurant was abysmal....there were 3 other tables and several staff working. After 10 minutes we walked out....never got a menu or even had anyone come close enough to our table for us to flag them down. Not only did they lose our business in the restaurant but they side lost a couple of golf shirt sales that would have happened after lunch.
Spring break Spring training time
The pace of play was no doubt a result of the confluence of spring break and spring training and Saturday.
