About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in May 2019.
ASU Karsten Golf Course features a Pete and Perry Dye-designed links-style course characterized by design features that challenge, such as Dye's mounding and bunkering - making it important to pick the right golf clubs if you don't want to run up that score. Big-name PGA and LPGA Tour golfers like Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair and Grace Park have all played this course.
ASU Karsten Golf Course offers several holes one could call "signature," such as the short par-4 fourth, the tough par-4 ninth, the daunting par-3 16th (248 yards from the tips) and the challenging par-4 final hole. The water on the left side is the reason this is called one of Arizona's most difficult finishers.
After a round at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, check out the 21,000-square-foot Sun Angel Clubhouse, which tempts players with its Southwestern and American fare in the Trophy Room.

A good walk spoiled by.....
Pace slow(5 hr round). Not being able to see FW's or Greens from most tees slows play. Too many blind shots.
Course condition-Run down.Tee boxes beat up w/ much sand, dirt and divots. Greens loaded with unfixed divots and many fine pebbles. Hard packed dirt w/ a little grass mixed in on and off fairways. Sand traps hardpacked/lacking sand.
Ambiance.None. Airplanes passing over on every hole. Construction/noise everywhere. Not scenic. Many holes seem similar. Power lines/towers in line of sight everywhere.
Other-GPS on old carts malfunction quite a bit.
Golf carts were not available until 2 minutes before tee time.
Range balls were what you would find at a miniature golf putting range.
Mixed feelings
The fairways and greens are still in great shape. But the rough hasn't received any water and the bunkers were rock hard. Rumor is the proposed conversion to student housing may be delayed due to funding. If that is the case, please maintain it because it is a great track. For golf trippers, it could be an excellent first or last course due to its proximity to the airport.
It was a big slice to the right...I want a muligan
Hello Golf Now Peeps
We had a tee time for 1:30 pm today and we did not get out till 1:50 pm (strike 1). We had to wait for a power cart that was just finishing from a group from the 18th hole and it's an old electric cart (strike 2) We were told to start from hole 10 and the group in front of us were the Denver University Ladies Golf Team and the round was over 5 hours long (guess what strike 3)....The pro shop should have advised us this situation (give a discount or a ASU hat)
Here is the kicker...with 5 hole to go, our 1970 power cart decided that it was done for the night. Our playing partners had to bumper car us back to the clubhouse (oh dear....strike 4)
Before you book this course re-consider this choice....it's a free mulligan
ASU Karsten Golf Course
I have not played Karsten in a few years! The course appears to be a little rundown. Greens were not as fast as I remember them being...
Noisiest course in town
While this course is well layed out a and he fairways and greens in very good condition, the views are ruined by endless construction i any direction you look. I like golf because it gives me a Chance to be out in nature and enjoy the scenery. This course is in a direct flight pattern from Sky Harbor Airpot and the plane traffic is incredibly annoying. I counted 8 planes flying over us on a par three alone. The GPS on the carts is useless. You have to listen to the same ad at least 3 times a hole and reboot the hole at least two times per hole. If you get a GPS that works. The other two player we were with had a non functioning GOS, which probably wouldn't be a bad thing.
Over Priced
Played with a group of snow birds on 02/27/2015.
Charge $9.00 for small bag of practice balls.
We preregistered online for $90.00 and they wanted to charge us $135 when we arrived. Paid $90
Tee boxes including practice tee were in tough shape (divots and sand).
Fairway and rough was not in good shape. Greens were ok. Course layout is difficult and unfair on occasion. A couple holes are crowded and almost cross. Be prepared for billie goat lies on severe mogos and humps.
I have crossed this one off my future list of courses to play.
very dissappointed
The course was listed in good condition and value good which was not true! The course was in terrible was shape and I had a friend from out of town, I chose this course based on golf now rating and was very disappointed and so was he. The rating should have been average at best. I would have taken him elsewhere if I would have known. It was not worth what we paid.
Great Course
The course seemed over-booked, so the pace was very slow. It took over 5 hours to finish 18, and it was dark by the time we finished.
Over rated
Carts were awful, $4.00 for bottle of water too much, greens bumpy with fine rocks, traps have no sand staff ok, not overly friendly.
Great greens
Great greens. Lots of mounds and bunkers to catch bad shots.
Airport Golf
A very noisy course, from the adjacent dorm construction to the constant airplane traffic. Additionally there was a helicopter going back and forth over our heads for hours. We found out later that they were gridding the course for future development, closing down the golf course at a future date.
Nice break from resorts
fairways and tee boxes were a bit ragged, but greens were great. Played front nine in an hour and forty. Unfortunately, back nine was way congested. Front nine are nice, but not memorable. Back nine were great, challenging, memorable. Closing 16 to 18 were classic dye.
Fun
Very fun course in great shape has some power lines but other than that some nice views of the college and stadium. Played the championship tees and was able to recover from most missed fairways will definitely play again.
Great links stlye in the desert
Great links style course, lot of dirt moved to build. Very interesting and challenging to play. No par 5's on front (par 34), longer more difficult back 9. Well maintained, good greens. Winter overseed tees, fairways and greens only, rough dormant bermuda. Not much in the wat of views.
Play it now, ASU planning to expand in golf area next 3-5 years.
Very walkable, only two short walks green to t-box.
nice rolling hills
Great course with a good variety of different hole layouts. Different challenges on each hole with pretty good forgiveness of errant shots.
Winter Golf
Being the fact it is January and the course is dormant and over seeded with Rye, the conditions were as expected! The pace of play was due to the fact cthe fellas in front of us could not hit it out of their shadows but they were having fun and that is what counts!
At one point during our round, we were teeing off on the par four 15 th and there were four groups on our tee box... The group in front of us and ourselves, as well as, the groups looking for their balls! It took over four hours to at but I would recommend the course!
Get their while you still can.
Rumored to fall to the developer's shovel in upcoming months, this ASU campus course is a gem.
A very "franklloydwright-esque" clubhouse, with the largest assortment of college-themed threads I've ever seen.
The Turkey Pot Pie warmed the insides before blasting off into a high 30's / low 40's (temps, not scores) afternoon.
We could hear the Huskies and Cowboy's practicing for the Cactus Bowl during our round. The location could not have been more convenient to downtown Tempe and West Phoenix
Hope to catch it again before it goes away.
Nice time, decent golf
First time playing this course. It's okay. They have some really nice holes like #9, #16 and #18 around the water. The rest of the course is fairly short and wide open, though missing the fairways will leave some difficult shots of the mounds and heavy rough. It's a fun and shorter course to play in fairly good condition. Somewhat overpriced though. Planes taking off and landing every few seconds is kind of neat!
Beautiful course
We played in the cold and drizzle but it was a fun course, well kept and great location!
