About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in May 2019.
ASU Karsten Golf Course features a Pete and Perry Dye-designed links-style course characterized by design features that challenge, such as Dye's mounding and bunkering - making it important to pick the right golf clubs if you don't want to run up that score. Big-name PGA and LPGA Tour golfers like Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair and Grace Park have all played this course.
ASU Karsten Golf Course offers several holes one could call "signature," such as the short par-4 fourth, the tough par-4 ninth, the daunting par-3 16th (248 yards from the tips) and the challenging par-4 final hole. The water on the left side is the reason this is called one of Arizona's most difficult finishers.
After a round at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, check out the 21,000-square-foot Sun Angel Clubhouse, which tempts players with its Southwestern and American fare in the Trophy Room.

Amazing condition for AZ summer golf
The course was in amazing condition for it being summer time. Fairways nice and green and the greens running very true.
Very average
Course layout is unusual. There's a few great holes and a bunch of unknown or blind shots to the green. Even if I'm on the fairway, I should be able to see the entire green. Greens were a bit slow, but soft. I had a few putts that bounced and one putt that hit a ball mark and changed directions completely. Booked online and was charged more than the published price through golfnow. Charged the other players the right price, but not me- the one who made the tee time. Didn't want to fix it. Difference was about $4.00. Was refunded $1.00 cash. Could have given me an extra drink coupon or something more.
Only recommend in the Summer to play when less crowded. Teed off at 4:30 and finished in 3 hours as a threesome.
Fun to think about the history here.
My first time playing the Karsten course at ASU. Pretty fun layout. A nice variety of holes from easy to very challenging. From the back tees, some of the holes would be unreachable for me in regulation, but I am just average in distance. They are getting ready to aerify the greens, but when I played, they were pretty quick and pretty true. The staff were nice and I had an enjoyable time. It's a course that I would reccommend to everyone to play when in the Valley. Thinking about the people that have walked those fairways was fun, too.
Great Expectations
I had high expectations for the condition of the course and the greens and as predicted they were in great shape. I played exceptionally well and had a great time as well. I great 4th of July overall!
Thank you ASU - K!
Great Value
Outstanding Value, will be sorry to see the course
turned over for development
Great Shape
Played on a Sunday in 4 1/2 hours. Greens would hold and they were fast and smooth. Fairways were green and they had good rough, not to long but challeneging. Great Pete Dye lay-out.
Staff and course
The course is in great shape and the greens run phenominal!! Love the track, the staff and especially the frozen grapes..
The only complaint if any would be the pace of play today.. We had two groups in front of is hitting multiple balls, that's where the excellent staff came in and handle the issue
Course was great!! Great Price.
Looks like this will be a parking lot soon.
You better play this Pete Dye design soon.
Nothing like it in the Phoenix area.
toasty phoenix golf
enjoyed a somewhat slow round at Karsten golf course.. paired up with some nice young guys..course is fair, rolling terrain, greens rolled true, enjoyable round, reasonable for a noon tee time, pace of play only drawback
ASU Karsten
Course plays harder than the yardage would make you believe it should play. Many fun/ interesting holes.
Good Time
Course in good condition, somewhat of a challenge for our group, (Not long ball hitters) but course was in great condition and the greens were just right for challenging putts. Sand was quite solid in traps. Overall a good time had by all.
nice course but way to hard.....
I dont know why I picked this course to play, I guess I wanted to try it one more time, well I will never play here again, not because its a bad course its that it is so difficult to play, you can never see the greens from the fairway so you have to climb a hill to see where the greens are, ridiculous, huge bunkers in the middle of the fairways that block your view of the greens...stupid...I dont think the fairways are flat at all, there always an unlevel spot wherever your ball landed, either above your feet or below, way to difficult to hit a ball from an unlevel ground...greens were very fast...for 26 bucks I guess it was a good deal but I will stick to much easier courses in the future...
Stay in the middle
The course is in good shape from the tee box to the fairways. Get off the fairway however and you will be hitting out of a crunchy burnt out hill. Off the fairway is just simply burnt out. That explains the great price I wa able to play it for. I expected more for my first run at ASU, but it was not bad. Some holes are more burnt than others. It is Arizona desert and I guess I was expecting to much. The layout was very interesting though. I found that part fun.
ASU
One of my favorite courses in the area, will be sorry to see it close in a couple years.
hope they keep it open
Course was in good shape for the time of year. Price was finally reasonable and my wife wanted to play while it is still a golf course. I've always like the combination of really easy and then really hard holes. We hope the course remains open and not turned into another condo project.
Challenging and fun
Great course to play to have both a challenge and fun. Biggest challenges are around the greens.
super fun course if your into pete dye!
If you are a lover of all kinds of golf and your tired of straightforward courses where u can use your laser on every hole try ASU Karsten. Simply put it was a blast to play a par 70 course that made u think on every shot, including putts. Talk about blind shots even from 60 yards in u don't get a cake walk. Conditions are alittle rough but we had just played Whirlwind resort so that speaks for itself. Staff was great and funny since I'm a resident in Az it was fun to get back down to my old stomping grounds, with that being all said if you don't mind alittle noises (construction) all overTempe and the flight path right over the course then iI rrecommend Karsten for a fun round. Btw 36- 44 thats the most difference in two 9' s all spring....lol
Pete dye out did himself.
Very nice layout Super greens. Lush fairways. Very tough but fair course. Only hole that was a killer was a 217 yard par 3. Brutal. Will play this course every time I visit phx. I'm from Ohio we don't have anything close to this layout.
Come for the test of golf, not the service
My son and I Played here while on vacation. Course is excellent. Good test of all elements of your game. My only complaint is that we had to rent clubs (ping G25s). They had not been cleaned. All iron faces were dirty, with grooves full of mud. Rental bags had no towels or any way to clean them. For $60 per rental set, we thought we would at least get clean clubs. My son, who works in the back shop at our home club says his head pro would puke if rental sets that dirty were given to customers.
Good course but noisy.
Really enjoyed the course and clubhouse. Staff was friendly and tee was on-time. The only drawback was the noise, particulary on the first 5 holes, from the power plant on the next property. The planes taking off were not a major problem.
