Amazing Poppy Ridge!
Poppy Ridge is a fantastic course for any golfer- enough challenges and superb layout!
Top of the East Bay
Best value in the Tri-Valley, with 3 great 9-hole courses. Very well maintained, drains well which is important during the spring in Northern California.
Greens need to be better
No notice given from GolfNow about green conditions. Zin greens recently sanded and annoyed yet ok smooth . They other nine merlot had. No sand but very bumpy since green core work maybe awhile ago .Very bumpy greens and inconsistent speed . Would not have played here if I knew . Yes go ahead and blame golf now . They normally notify of recent work on greens though . Ps no one said in the pro shop about recent work . Neither the starter who couldn’t figure out my tee time . Disappointed. Poppy is better than this
Great test
We played 27 holes and loved each of the nines. The course is a test for sure but there are holes that are also great for a par or maybe a birdie. Some really cool holes out there. Loved number 9 on Chardonnay and Zinfandel finished to a green near water. Lost a ball on one of them.
Great courses (27 holes) -- great conditions. Best in the area.
Ready for Spring
Overall the course played as good as it could due to the recent rains. Very wet and cold conditions, but the course layout is challenging and workable. The greens were in great shape, tuff due to the weather. Looking forward to playing the course again when the sun come out.
Poppy ridge
Played here with my son in-law and we both enjoyed the course. They were cart path only or we would have went for the golf board experience of surfing while golfing.....maybe next trip to California. Definitely recommend playing here
Good course. Had a good game, though it was very windy.
Course is in good condition. Greens are a bit slower than expected, even with the very strong wind that day. Since it was windy, not many people played. We 2-some finished 18 holes in 3.5 hours.
Nice layout
The layout is great and the staff is outstanding. But the sand traps are the worst I've ever seen. It's like somebody just dumped a load of sand in the bunkers. Way too fine and soft. Some fairway bunkers had no sand in them. I don't understand how such a great course could have such awful bunkers. Please fix.
My Take
I joined this NCGA club after driving up and talking with the GM. I wanted a place where I could walk nine holes. Since this place has 3 nine holes courses this seemed perfect. The GM told me there was a 9 hole rate so I joined. Upon my next visit, I went into check-in and walk 9 holes. When I asked for a walking 9 hole time I was told by the Pro that no such thing is offered. I told him I was assured by the GM when I joined that there was. He response was a bit condescending implying that I might be lying. So long story short, this is not a place to play nine unless you are willing to pay full price for nine holes.
All that being said, this course has a very good grass driving range. A large putting green. I fairly good bunker practice area. It also has a small chipping area behind the putting green.
There is almost always a wind blowing at this course so it can be a great challenge for your game. When the wind is down this course really shines! Consistent greens from hole to hole and nine to nine. Good bunkering that can be a challenge to avoid and make you think your way around the course.
The pace of play can be good if people play from their proper tee markers, no way to police that it's just the nature of the beast.
The food at the turn is nothing special, the usual sandwiches and hot dog variety. Nice patio for after play to wind down and go over your scorecard (personal gripe is $11.00 for a 4 oz pour of not so good wine, get a pint of beer instead). The service can be spotty in the clubhouse but that is to be expected at a golf course, after all, it is not their main focus. The golf is.
I personally like the Merlot side the best, it's a good mix of holes. Buy a "birdie" yardage book if you are going to play the course often, it will help where to hit the ball for the best approach to the greens. No real gimmicky holes on this course, unlike Wente.
So, it is a nice course and worth the drive when the wind is down. Or for a nice challenge when the wind is up.
I just wish there was a nine-hole walking rate.
Good Course
Played here a bunch of times. Course was in really goof shape for the winter time and pace was great today. Always a good time
Awesome 27 holes available to play. All have a level of difficulty and uniqueness while being very fair.
