Best value in the Tri-Valley
SO glad I live 5 miles from here! There are other nice courses close, but not a fan of the long rounds at Callippe and can't swing the $125 for a round at Wente too often. Greens are great even when in transition from punching, fairways tend to be firm with minimal over watering issues. For those who are higher handicaps, BRING PLENTY OF GOLF BALLS! Great views of the course with zero traffic or urban noise. Good staff, players tend to be friendly, nothing pretentious, just a great Second Home of the NCGA.
A first-time pleasure
We played Chardonnay and Zinfandel and I expect that was by design, never having been there before- apparently Merlot is a little tougher. I could have wished for a little more grass in spots from an aesthetic point of view, but from a playing standpoint, the course is in very nice condition. Note to all, there is actually sand in the bunkers, and you can hit a sand shot out and onto the green. Everywhere we've been in the last year, the bunkers have been either standing water, mud, or so compacted from repeated watering that it was like hitting off the sidewalk. Three cheers for Poppy Ridge and maintaining them so much better! The fairway bunkers were pretty hard and barren, but you're trying to pick the ball out anyway, not hit a sand shot, right? Picturesque, pleasant, albeit a little confusing as you cross paths with at least one other 9 as you make your way around, and one tee serving 2 holes, one from either 9, Chard and Zin. Don't get confused on which direction you're supposed to hit on that one! :-) Given the back and forth, I wouldn't recommend trying to walk- I enjoy walking, but this would have been a real trek. We had a great time, and will unquestionably be back.
was perfect day of golf
Had a great day playing at Poppy Ridge, played Chardonnay and Zinfandel.
Eventhough the temperature was going to be 'hot', was nice overcast at 88F, nice breaze, so still very nice to play.
Course overall in great shape, especially knowing we had period of very hotttt days (100+). Few spots that were overwatered, but did not impact the play.
Pace was really good, finished in 3.45 hours, hardly had to wait at any golfshot...so very relaxing day.. thank you.. made the day :-)
Poppy Ridge
WE loved the course and would definitely recommend it.
Solid Course
Poppy Ridge is always a great place to play. Good course and its been in good condition all year.
Excellent layout, a challenge but fair as well
Greens in very good condition. Only negative comment would be the fairways could use a little work but want to emphasize they were not in poor condition either. Highly recommend playing the course. Livermore gets very hot in the summer but fortunately today was perfect weather wise.
Fun Course
This course was fun and different from the flat valley courses which my group is used to playing. We started on Merlot and ended on Chardonnay on a Friday afternoon.
Speed - 4.5 hour round but we had 10 minute delays per hole on back nine.
Course Layout - Elevation changes and several blind shots made it a challenging course but was scoreable when hitting the targets. High handicaps should bring extra sleeve of balls. Course knowledge would be very useful on this course.
Course condition- Greens were average speed with a few bumps but rolled true most of the time. Fairways were ok but several areas with sparse grass. We had to play winter rules. Bunkers were excellent with deep sand.
I would play this course again but not at full morning price.
World Class Golf Course
Played on a Monday. Weather was hot, windy but comfortable. Met a couple of guys and we had a jolly time. Pace was excellent and we played good golf. It's a challenging course where the wind and hilly lies test your golf skills. The greens are excellent. I enjoyed myself immensely!
Great course
Poppy Ridge is great course. Great layout. Pace of play is also great.
Slowest round in the east bay
Should it take 6 hours to play 18 holes? If you think so, poppy ridge is the course for you.
Awesome course and freindly staff
Course Conditions is great! true pleasure playing at Poppy Ridge- except it was very hot - triple digits!
I like the course, but....
... the fairway conditions on certain holes were very thin/hardpan, and the greens were inconsistent/need rolling.
great time out
staff very friendly at check in. played on a Saturday and everything went real well. pace was good and course was in great shape.looking forward to returning soon
Great course but avoid prime time
Course is awesome but you will have a 5.5 hour round if you golf prime time on a weekend. Best value is the twilight , much less crowded.
